Hi Dora, could you tell us a bit about your business?I’d always worked in the corporate world. When baby number 3 came along I looked at some baby shower invitations and everything out there was just so boring and ordinary, so I decided to start designing something different to fill my time. As Invite Co I’m known for my unique and creative designs of invitations and candles for all sorts of occasions including weddings, christenings, birthdays and more.

What insight can you give us about being a business in this industry?It’s very competitive. You need to constantly come up with unique designs and give customers a reason to come to you as opposed to other larger well known businesses. Working on handmade designs alongside my customers gives them something unique that they love.

How big is your business? And has this changed much since you started?Although I’m still a ‘one man show’, I have collaborated with my daughter who is very creative and has taken an interest in the business, so we can now expand and take on more orders.

What are the challenges of being a creative home based business?The main challenge I have faced is that I don’t have enough exposure on social platforms,so I rely mainly on word of mouth and personal recommendations. This is largely how my business has grown to what it is today.

What was a hurdle for business growth and how did you overcome it?I’d create a unique sample and trust clientsto take this home, only to find they have copied this design with much lower quality or shared it with other businesses. Changing the wayI distributed samples and ideas to customersby sketching designs with them helped overcome this and also saved time and money.

How important is being agile and ‘working on the go’ as a business owner?To keep up with competition it’s vital thatI’m agile and flexible to maintain good quality.As a lot of the market has moved to online/digital invitations, I’ve given customers a reason to stick to the old fashion way of sending out physical invitations.

What was your ‘Believe Big’ moment? My Believe Big moment was when my daughter approached me to collaborate and expandthe business. This was such a proud momentas something that started as a hobby forme now has the potential to expand and growto a larger-scale business.

Who is in your support network that helped you get to where you are today?My support network would have to be my family. My husband has his own business and has supported the family while I looked after the children. But he was extremely encouraging when I started and even helped me with ideas and opinions before presenting to my customers.
