CIC Canyon Guide training – not only a technical guide education but a guiding philosophy.

Over the past years, professional canyoning has experienced major transformation. The practice has shown that in most guiding situations technical skills alone are not sufficiant. There is a particular need of educational and psychological skills. The entertaining part of guiding, the communication skills, the „edutainment“ should not be underestimated. The CIC assimilates these requirements in the fourth version of its curriculum.

We train our students so they can become guides and lea-ders who are competent in pedagogy, communication and technique, so they can handle daily multiple situations in the professional business. A strong emphasis is put on the trainee‘s personality for it is more difficult to train beha-viour than technical skills. Thus when a trainee has a personality which does not suit the guide requirements (incapacaty to work in a team, lack of communication, poor leadership skills ...), those will not be able to conclude the training even when they have sufficient technical skills.CIC finds that this is a major difference with other educa-tional outdoor programs.

In order to insure evaluation transparency, we have trained CIC instructors to use modern evaluation sciences (tech-nical university of Munich) and we work with the most modern technical supports.

The instructors yearly update training

Stefan HofmannPresident of the CIC

offers strong support to our training system and to allow it to improve.

One of the specific aspects of our training is its internatio-nal aspect which plays an important part in our professio-nal association. We do not only want to carry the word „international“ in our name, we also want to put it in practice. We meet this requirement with a team of multilangual instructors.

The training is divided into modules. Contents are not repedatif but follow a progression in all required compe-tences. This may cause problems to sudents coming from other trainings and not having met all the elements of the preceeding CIC modules.

Successive modules create a complete competence in the following fields: rope techniques, white water techniques, hydrology, psychology and pedagogy, communication, gui-ding and preparing trips, meteorology, rescue and first aid, ecology, physical fitness and crisis management.

CIC graduates can therefore provide services worthy of what a client can expect from a professional canyon guide.

legiTimACy

(1)CIC future guide exams are held internaly. They are super-vised by CIC instructors at different locations.

(2)Passing an exam proves the competence to guide in canyons based on the rules of the CIC. The exam contents are based on the present module contents. In case of repeating an exam it is the present content which will be evaluated. Each candidate is responsible to keep track of changes and updates of modules content and always has the posibility to participate in parts of the training which will allow him to aknowledge the changes which may have happend since him/her original training.

(3)Upon succeeding the final exam, the candidate has the right to carry the title „Canyonführer CIC / CIC canyon guide / Guide Canyon CIC”.

(4)The title is valid for two years and can be renewed upon participation in an update training (exeptionaly every two and a half years).

(5)Training and exam fees are based on the scale of charges and fees.

(1)The training which prepares for the CIC guide exam is divided into three modules and two internships. It includes at least 400 hours of training.

(2)If the instructor team does not offer CIC trainings, other trainings may be recognized based on §19 (cf. supra).Other trainings are listed in a separate document.

(3)The complete mandatory training must be succesfully accomplished. The certificate attesting his/her success is issued to candi-dates who were actively taking part in all educational units and who succesfully passed the exams of their educational unit or program chosen by the senior examiner. All trainees are informed upon starting their formation, about the modalities of issuing certificates of participation and certificates of success.

(4)The senior examiner can release trainees from modules or parts of those modules, when they can prove that they are familiar with the content of this module from another canyoning course. The volume of teaching and the exam level must be compa-rable and similar to those of the CIC.

Beyond technical competences, we want guides with an assertive personality.

(1)Module 1 aims to gather all the basic white water and rope techniques. In addition, extensive personality training is provided. This module comprises a minimum of 76 hours of training, divided in three parts : - white water (23h) - rope technique (32h) - theory (21h)This module is conducted by a senior instructor and one or more instructors. Generally, a ratio of 1 teacher for 5 students is expected to ensure an optimal learning environ-ment.

(2)The theoretical subjects studied are : - White water techniques - White water rescue (self rescue and third party rescue) - Risk management, panic - Communication basics - White water equipment and tools - Hydrology and fluid mechanics - White water and diving first aid - Sports biology - Training and kinetics - Standards of care - Rope technical equipment and tools - Knots - Accidents, SAR, laws and insurances - Meteorology - Ecology, nature conservation - Specific vocabulary in foreign languages

§ 7 COnTenT Of mOdule 1 (3)Practical subjects studied : - White water techniques - White water rescue (self rescue and third party rescue) - Risk management, panic - Communication - Coordination, endurance and skill developement - Respiratory techniques, apnea - Use of white water and rope technical equipment and tools - Different type of knots and their use - Abseiling, braking and blocking - Walking and progressing techniques, rock climbing (max. level III UIAA)

(4)As part of the rope technical training, a canyon trip is done by the instructors in order to present the goal of the techni-ques taught and applied during the course.

(5)During the initiation and developement phases, the lear-ning conditions must allow each student an infinite gesture repetition to achieve mastering almost on instinct. Some of the exercises will have to be executed in neoprene suits in order to obtain conditions as close as possible to reality.

(6)There is a total transparency concerning the student‘s evaluation, thanks to a permanent display of individual records of daily evaluation.

SySTem Of mOdule 1

(1)There is no final exam, but a continuous evaluation during training which is used for final Module 1 evaluation.Students are rated each day during announced phases. At the end of the training, these evaluations are used.

(2)Evaluations are divided in the following fields : a) Professional competence (ropes, white water, anticipation/overview, endurance). b) Social competence (safety, teamwork, reliability) c) Communication competence (interest, engage- ment, verbal/non-verbal, guiding skills).

The technical evaluation (a) has five rating levels : 1 = No fault 2 = Small fault 3 = Big fault or accumulation of small faults 4 = Serious fault - Demands not met 5 = Exercise halted or corrected by instructor for safety reasons

The personality evaluation (b and c) has five rating levels : 1 = stable personality, assured appearence, clear communication, very good overall perception and reaction over risks, constant search for safety, team work, good rhetoric. 2 = Personnality with strong developement potential 3 = Ambivalent personnality 4 = Personnality with laborious developement potential 5 = Unstable personnality

(3)Evaluations are published every evening. In case of rating levels 4 or 5, the decision is justified in writing.

(4)At the end of module 1, the average level is calculated in each subfield of a, b and c. - Success : average must be <= 3 - Failure : average > 3

The white water evaluation is not taken into account in this calculation, it is used in evaluation of module 2.Ratings of failed fields cannot be compensated by ratings of successful fields.

(5)In case module 1 is failed, the whole module must be started all over again, and one can do that only three times in total.

§ 9 COnTenT Of mOdule 2 (1)Module 2 happens right after module one, for both modules are complementary, module 2 being the logical following of module 1. The aim is to deepen the knowledge acquired (module 1) in the new educational and methodi-cal phases, and to enrich them with fuller content. This module contains a minimum of 76 training hours, divided in two training units : - Practical lessons (58h) - Theory lessons (18h)The module is conducted under the leadership of one senior instructor, and possibly by one or more instructors.A ratio of 1 teacher to 5 students is aimed to ensure op-timal leadership. Whilst learning new and more complex techniques, it incorporates the basic techniques seen in the the first module but under more difficult conditions. The role of students is limited, in the progression and scenarios, to assisting the guide.

(2)The theoretical subjects covered are : - Leadership, strategies, role of an assistant - Medicine on specific aspects of canyoning traumas - Equipment and tools - Decission making skills and anticipation - Navigation, Topography - Organisation and structure of the CIC - Specific vocabulary in foreign languages

(3)Practical subjects covered are : - Communication

- Respiratory techniques - Physical training and bodybuilding - Use of equipment and tools - Different types of knots and their uses - Rescue techiques (self rescue and third party rescue / „distance“ rescue) - More complex rope techniques - Walking and progression techniques, climbing - Installation of anchors - Night training and progression at night - Anticipation as risk prevention

(4)In the phases of initiation and development, the conditions of learning must allow each student an infinite repetition of gestures to achieve almost instinctive mastering. He will perform some of the exercises dressed in neoprene suits in order to reproduce conditions as close as possible to reality. To make learning more efficient, the use of NTIC (New Technologies of Information and Communication) is recommended such as onsite video analysis.

(5)Total transparency on students evaluation is ensured by permanent posting of individual daily evaluations.

(3)Evaluations are published every evening. In case of rating levels 3, 4 or 5, the decision is justified in writing.

(4)At the end of module 2, the grades average is calculated within each subfield taking into account the ongoing evaluation. This grade has a coefficient of 1, and the final practical exam has a coefficient of 2.The average grade cannot be inferior to 2,5 in any of the fields - Success : average must be <= 2,5 - Failure : average > 2,5Ratings of failed fields cannot be compensated by ratings of successful fields. The theoretical exam is an independent whole.

(5)The theoretical exam comprises at least 80 questions on major subjects (guiding, white water, rope and rescue, meteorology, first aid).It is done as a multiple choice. Candidates have a maxi-mum of 2 hours to answer all the questions. These are formulated at least in English, or in the home language of the canditates exceptionnally. They are chosen by the seni-or instructor and come from a data base. To succeed at the theory exam, one has to have 80% correct answers in each domain of the multiple choice. If the 80 % is not attained, the module 2 theoretical exam is failed.

It can be taken again outside an official training course, within two to six months after the agreement with the presidency of the CIC.A candidate can present himself as many times as he wishes to succed the theoretical part.If the result is near the admission level (75 to 79%) the senior instructor can set up an oral examination remedial, if it is deemed appropriate. A candidate can present himself to the practical exam of module 2 even if he has not passed the theoretical part of this module. (6)The practical exam is part of the daily evaluations with a coefficient of 2. Grades are without decimal for the daily evaluation, and with a decimal for the final exam. The grade „5“ is fatal in each filed of the practical exam. This grade cannot be equalized by another practical note.

(7)In case of failure in the practical exam of module 2, one can present himself again to the exam only twice more, during the two following sessions. In case a trainee presents himself again to a practical exam, the daily evaluations of his last course will be taken into account. He can decide to follow all or part of a new course to improve his daily evaluation. Modified grades are accor-ding to days taken over.

(8)The presidency of the CIC nominates the examinators. Only CIC instructors can be examinators and members of a jury.

(9)Once module 2 is successfully passed (ongoing evaluation + practical exam + theoretical exam), the trainee receives the right to carry the „CIC Canyon Guide Assistant“ title. The senior instructor will hand out the professional card of CIC Canyon Guide Assistant and a written confirmation of success.

(10)The CIC title is valid 2 years. To keep it valid, one must participate every two years in an update course given by the CIC.

§ 11 inTeRnShiP (1)Simulating real guiding is only partially possible. This is why there must be a part in the education process which is fulfilling this need. This part of the training is handed to CIC guides who have successfully passed the full CIC training, and who respect its high standards. There, daily practice skills of customer management is recognized and can be transmitted under ideal conditions.

(2)The internship includes at least 80 hours or 10 days of training.

(3)During the internship, the student must work in at least three different canyons.

(4)The internship must be done with two different CIC guides.

(5)The internship must not take place in the original geogra-phical region of the trainee, or his usual area of practice.

(6)The trainee and the guide must comply with rules set in the specifications established for that purpose. If this is not met, the training days cannot be taken into account and the CIC guide may loose his ability to train new members.

(7)After each day of practice, the trainee and the CIC guide must each fill a pre-established form. These forms must be given to the trainee in an envelope allowing confidentiality.None of them should have the opportunity to consult the other one‘s forms.

(8)At the end of the training period, these forms must be sent to the CIC presidency by the student. The presidency deci-des if the training days can be all validated, or only partly.

(9) Training days done after the module 2 are the only ones that can be taken into account.

(10)After the internship, there is no imposed timelapse to enter module 3. However, it is mandatory to participate at least every two years in an update course of the CIC.
