SB geschlossen. Zum Einstieg legt L Folie 21 auf und zeigt Impuls A. L: Where are we? Make a guess. How do you know we are in London? B. Which landmarks can we see here? London has always been an ecomomic centre. People of different ethnic backgrounds live here.
! Practice pool p. 130/1 A presentation → Help with Check-in, p. 98/1b)
/ Practice pool p. 130/2 The Thames in history → Instead of Check-in, p. 98/1b)
The Thames is liquid history.
a) People built their cities next to a river for many reasons. First they needed fresh water to drink and for their animals and fields. Second the river provided fresh fish. Third the settlers could also use the river as a means of transport. Today rivers are not as important as they were in the past and they are sometimes very dangerous to the people and their houses due to floods. However even today rivers are important for transport or tourism. Moreover, we still use water power to produce electricity.

2 The world in a city! → WB Ex. 1–2; S16; Practice pool ! 130/3, / 131/4
Reporter: There are over 19 million foreign visitors to London every year – it’s one of the top places to visit in the world. But it’s also home to over 8 million people. And it’s one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, where people speak over 300 different languages! The Mayor of London once said: “London is one of the most diverse, thrilling and fascinating cities in the world.” Today, I’ll be visiting three different areas to find out more about what makes this city special for the people who live and work here … My first stop is the City of London, which is also sometimes called the “Square Mile”. It’s the oldest and most historic part of London. The Romans founded Londinium here almost 2,000 years ago – you can still see parts of the old Roman wall. And it’s also home to some very famous sights, including the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Museum of London. But the City of London is also a global financial centre and over 500,000 people work here in very modern buildings and skyscrapers. One of these people is Victoria Hall. She moved to London from Barnstaple, a town in Devon, in 2015. Why did you decide to move to London, Victoria?
Victoria: Well, when I finished university, I was offered a job by an international bank in the City of London. I couldn’t say no – as you just said, the City is a very important financi-al centre. I also really liked the idea of working with people from all over Europe. This was before the EU referendum in 2016. 70 % of Londoners wanted to stay in the Euro-pean Union. That’s very different to where I lived in Devon. People there wanted to leave – although many of them have now changed their mind. At the moment it’s really difficult to say what the consequences will be when Brexit actually happens.
Reporter: Anyway, what makes London special for you, Victoria?Victoria: It’s an exciting place to live. There are so many different things to do here: amazing
museums – many of which are free! – cinemas, cafés, restaurants, theatres and con-certs. I also enjoy shopping in Oxford Street. I’m lucky that I have a good job so that I can afford to do lots of different things. London’s very expensive. This is an especially big problem when you’re looking for somewhere to live. I’m lucky because I share a flat with a friend.
Reporter: I see … Is there anything you miss from back home? Victoria: Yeah, I really miss the countryside – London’s very busy and noisy. The traffic is a di-
saster! But at least there are some beautiful parks. My favourite one is Regent’s Park – it’s the biggest park and it’s also home to London zoo. I often go jogging there. …
Reporter: I’m now in Shoreditch in the East End, next to the City of London. Shoreditch is part of the boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets today. Traditionally, the East End of Lon-don was home to “real” Londoners or Cockneys. They even have their own Cockney dialect, and their accent has influenced the pronunciation that most British speakers use when they speak English today. In the 19th century, the people who lived here worked in industry or at the docks next to the river. London was a very important port in those days. That’s also why so many immigrants settled in the East End, where they had landed. For centuries, the East End was overcrowded, dirty and one of the poorest areas in the capital. It was called the “tough” end of London because it was dangerous and there was a lot of crime. But after the Olympic Games were held in the East End in 2012, there was an economic boom and now it’s the fastest-growing area in the capital. A lot of the old tower blocks have been pulled down and replaced by new expensive houses … I’m here with Stan Cobb, who was born in Shoreditch in the heart of the East End in 1954. So, tell us Stan, what’s so special about the East End?
Stan: It’s home! I’m a “real” Eastender – not like the people who’ve recently moved here because it’s fashionable! I’ve lived here all my life and I wouldn’t want to live anywhe-re else. There’s so much history and so many stories. For example, Shakespeare came to Shoreditch and there were performances of his plays here before they built the Globe Theatre on the other side of the river!
Reporter: I didn’t know that!

Crime in London: Tips for tourists → SB 103; G11
Complete this text about crime in London. Use adverbs of comment instead of the phrases in blue.
(Normally =) Generally , London is a very safe city, and most visitors to London have no
problems with crime. (It’s a shame, but =) Unfortunately , a small number of tourists are
unlucky. The most common crime is stealing a person’s money from their pocket, or ‘pickpocketing.’
(It seems that =) Apparently , the most popular places for pickpockets are crowded Tube and
train stations. (Naturally =) Of course , you can report the crime to the police if you want to.
(The truth is that =) Frankly , though, it’s unlikely that the police will catch the pickpocket.
(It’s clear that =) Obviously , it can be upsetting to lose your money, especially when you are
a visitor from abroad. (The positive thing is that =) Luckily , there’s a simple thing you can do to
stop pickpockets. Keep your hand on your money in crowded places.

Adjektiv + -ly: You can see the difference clearly here You can clearly see the difference between the words for the animals and the words for the food
Beachte folgende Rechtschreibregeln:
Merke dir folgende Ausnahmen:early → early Madison always gets up earlyfast → fast She learns languages fastfriendly → in a friendly way She smiled at me in a friendly way. good → well She explained everything very well hard → hard She’s working hard Achtung: hardly = kaum high → high She can’t jump high near → near She lives near

a) EH: The climate in the Southwest seems to be dry and sunny. There are many spectacular tourist attractions like the Grand Canyon or Las Vegas. So there is a mix between exciting cities with gigantic hotels and interesting casinos and beautiful landscapes places with an interesting cultural background. Pictures A and B show that in the Desert Southwest there are still buildings of the Pueblo natives as well as houses in the Spanish colonial style. Some native people still live in the Pueblo settlements. This is an extreme contrast to the very modern and lively city of Las Vegas. People are probably amazed about the wide-open spaces you can find in the deserts of the Southwest, which are shown in picture C, for example. Visitors to the Grand Canyon can enjoy a spectacular view when they look down the canyons. The desert places are very hot during the day and very cold at night.

d) Individuelle S-Beiträge, z. B. Bavarian Alps: This region in the very south of Bavaria is ideal for hiking, skiing, canoeing or even paragliding. There are many traditional villages and some famous towns like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berchtesgaden, Füssen and Oberstdorf from which you can explore the beautiful mountains. They might not be as high as in neighbour-ing Austria, but you can get fantastic views there and can visit famous tourist attractions like Schloss Neuschwanstein, Kloster Ettal or Obersalzberg, the place of Hitler’s former mountain residence.

Presenter: OneRanger: Hey you guys, how are you all doing this morning? All at once: Great. / Fine. / Good. / Doing fine. / Awesome.Ranger: Great! My name’s Erin. Welcome to the world’s most beautiful office! All at once: Huh? / What? / Office? / What is she talking about?Adam: Did you really just say ‘office’?Ranger: That’s right! As a ranger for the National Park Service, this is where I work,
so I call it my ‘office’. Nice view, don’t you think?Brenda: This is soooo much nicer than my mom’s office down in Phoenix. You’ve got the
best job in the world!Ranger: Well, my day starts at 4:00 a.m., so that’s not so great. And everyone knows park
rangers don’t make the best money. But otherwise, I think you’re right: I’ve got the best job! The people down in Phoenix can have all their cars and office buil-dings and air-conditioning, but here all this wonderful fresh air is the BEST air-conditioning in the world! – So, you’re from Phoenix?
Girl 2: Yeah, we go to Desert Foothills Junior High School.Boy 2: Home of the Scorpions! (whoop, whoop!)Ranger: The Scorpions, huh? We’ve got a few of those here too. But you’re from Arizona,
so I don’t have to warn you about dangerous animals like snakes or scorpions. – Anyway, why don’t I give you a few basic facts about the Grand Canyon to get started.
All at once: Yeah, sounds good. / Sure, no problem. / Yes, that’s fine.Ranger: OK, here we go: We’ve been a national park since 1919, so that makes us America’s
15th park; Yellowstone was the first. The canyon is one mile deep – just think of four Empire State Buildings on top of each other. Yes, that’s how deep the canyon is. (murmuring all around) The canyon is also 10 miles wide, and the Colorado River way, way down there runs through the park for 277 miles. – Any questions?
Presenter: TwoBoy 2: I have one! How many people have died here at the canyon?Ranger: Oh, I always get that question. Well, since the mid-1800s there have been around
750 deaths that we know about.Brenda: Oh no – so many?!Ranger: I know it sounds like a lot, but don’t forget that we get around six million visitors
a year, so it’s really not so bad for about 175 years. But yes, every death is one too many. – Can you guess how most of those people died? These examples can teach you a lot.
Boy 2: That’s easy: They fell down into the canyon.Ranger: Actually, more people have died because of the extreme weather conditions
here than from falling. It gets so hot in the canyon, and the trails down to the river are so long that some hikers don’t realize how much water they need, and then they die before they could get any help. – Or, some have died from too much water.
Girl 2: How can there be too much water where it’s so hot and dry?

More about conditional sentences → WB 40/5, 41/6 → G5
a) Copy the examples of conditional sentences in lines 8–9, 30–31, 43–44 and 49–52 and match them with rules A–D.
A The condition cannot be fulfilled anymore.B It is realistic or likely that the condition will be fulfilled.C It is unrealistic, impossible or unlikely that the condition will be fulfilled.D The condition is a fact or happens regularly.
b) Find and copy the three conditional sentences in the text that don’t fit any of the four types. What is different? Do the condition and the result refer to the past or to the present?
c) Use the ideas below to make your own conditional sentences.
In the US you go to a famous college – you get a good job | you train hard – you run faster next time | I be a superhero – I save the world | I know that it’s so difficult – I take more time | I live on a ranch – I learn to ride a horse as a child
If I had three wishes … → WB 41/7 → G6
a) You can use I wish or If only to express wishes. Look at how you can express wishes about the present, the past and the future. Which tenses are in the wish clause?
Wishes about the present: I wish I lived closer.Wishes about the past: If only I had gone later.Wishes about the future: I wish I could / would see you more often.
b) Find the wishes in the dialogue and say if they are about the present, the past or the future. Think of more wishes Adam or Brenda could have.
c) Talk about your own wishes.
An interview with a student athlete
a) Listen to the interview with Brad, a high school baseball player, and sum up how he sees his chances for a career in pro baseball. What do you think about Brad’s plan B? Why is it important to have a plan B?
b) Do research about a famous athlete. Prepare questions and answers for an interview, act it out as a role play and record it.
Compare schools
Make notes about what is different between a US school and your school. Think of hours, subjects, clubs, sports. Look on the internet for more facts if necessary. Discuss with a partner which things are better where, and present your results to the class.

Everyone can be a cheerleader
Complete this text about cheerleading.
Cheerleading is a great sport. If it weren’t, not many people would do .
Cheerleaders professional athletes train very hard at gym.
Many young girls boys wish that they make the team at
school. If there more scholarships for cheerleaders the past, maybe more
students want to try out cheerleading today. 2019 was
first time that men part in the Super Bowl1 as cheerleaders. If there had
more men as cheerleaders big sports events, there more
boys might have given cheerleading chance.

What are you going to do tomorrow? Are you going to practice for the barrel race?
No, I’m not Mom’s friends are going to visit, and I’m going to meet their daughter
Our visit to London is going to be fun
Das going-to future bildest du aus einer Form von be (am/is/are) + going to + Infinitiv des Verbs:
Aussage: Mom’s friends are going to visit with their daughter Madison
Verneinung: Emily isn’t going to practice for the barrel race
Ergänzungsfrage: What are you going to do this weekend, Dave?
Entscheidungsfrage mit Kurzantwort:
Are you going to go to the movie theater?– Yes, I am/No, I’m not
Vergleiche: We’re going to visit Minneapolis next weekWir werden nächste Woche Minneapolis besuchen. Wir besuchen nächste Woche Minneapolis.
