The Coming Flood Of Data…
Source: Cisco, datafloq (Google)
By 2020…
• 50B intelligent connected devices
• 212B connected sensors
• 47% of connections will be
machine-to-machine
Each day in 2020…
• Average Internet User 1.5 GB
• Self-driving car 4,400 GB
• Connected plane 40,000 GB
• Connected factory 1,000,000 GB
The Rise of Connected Things and Machines
Generating Tremendous amounts of Data
17.02.2018 11:59 BSC Computer GmbH 6
• Moore’s Law marches on…• Lower cost compute power
• Lower cost communications
• Now realistic to put compute & comms in small, fixed-function
devices
• Devices you were already going to buy will now be smart &
connected• Very fast ramp in volume
• And some new types of devices too!
• Explosion in the amount of data & number of control points
So What Has Changed with IOT?

Complexity of Standards
17.02.2018 11:59 BSC Computer GmbH 10
• Make it easy for developers to deal with the complexity of IoT comms
• Provide a common data model that developers can use to interface with
all IoT devices and their underlying data
• Establish an architectural foundation that can achieve the necessary
scalability
• Focus the architecture around interoperability
• Supports the needs of multiple vertical markets (since many use cases
span multiple vertical markets)
• Provide a path towards future consolidation of standards
OCF – High Level Goals
17.02.2018 11:59 BSC Computer GmbH 11
• OCF is among the largest industry-led efforts to develop a secure
interoperability specification across the IoT ecosystem
• OCF has many liaison relationships with other consortia and
standards bodies active in the IoT space
• OCF represents industry coalescing around previously separate
industry efforts
• OCF is creating an open specification for secure, interoperable IoT,
will certify compliant devices, and intends to serve as a trusted
brand for consumers
• OCF has endorsed security as a key element of its work, and has a
dedicated security work group
Why OCF?
17.02.2018 11:59 BSC Computer GmbH 12
• Specifications developed by OCF, as well as the open source
reference implementation (IoTivity), are publicly available
• OCF is an open consensus based organization, anyone can obtain
basic membership at no cost
• Decisions in OCF are made by consensus, with the participation of
board and working group members
• Work in OCF is ongoing, with new features and requirements being
specified
• We welcome the input of all stakeholders, including those with
policy interests to ensure the public interest in IoT is addressed
