Die internationale Tagung „Thermen im Kontext – Das römische Bad in der Stadt und im Alltag“

findet vom 21. bis zum 24. Februar 2013 im Centre Culturel de Rencontre de l’Abbaye de

Neumünster in Luxembourg statt. Bei der Konferenz werden sich sowohl renommierte Archäologen

als auch junge Forscher aus mindestens zehn Ländern versammeln um ihre Forschungen zu

präsentieren und über zwei Aspekte der sozialen Funktion von römischen Badeanlagen zu

diskutieren.

Die Konferenz beginnt am 21.2.2013 mit einer Exkursion zum römischen Vicus von Dalheim und

seinem Bad. Dieser Besuch leitet die erste Session des folgenden Tages ein, in der drei Vorträge die

römische Siedlung bei Dalheim vorstellen.

Der erste thematische Aspekt der Tagung am 22. und 23.2.2013 behandelt die Aktivitäten, die nicht

direkt mit dem Baden und der Körperpflege in Verbindung stehen. Diese können durch die

Kleinfunde aus den verschiedenen Räumen von Badeanlagen erhellt werden. Der zweite Aspekt ist

die Stadtplanung und Position von Bädern im geographischen und sozialen Raum von antiken

Siedlungen. Ein kombinierter Ansatz dieser beiden Fragestellungen geben zukünftigen Forschungen

über römische Badegebäude neue Impulse und gehen über die Analyse der Gebäude und der

literarischen Quellen hinaus.

Die Tagung endet am 24.2.2013 mit einer Exkursion nach Trier um die reiche Vielfalt der Thermen in

der Kaiserresidenz kennenzulernen oder wieder zu entdecken.

Das Großherzogtum Luxemburg ist ideal gelegen um diese Konferenz willkommen zu heißen, da es

schon immer eine Vermittlerrolle vor allem zwischen den französischen und deutschen Forschungs-

traditionen spielte. Die Tagung fördert also den wissenschaftlichen Austauschs zwischen Forschern

auf europäischer Ebene und darüber hinaus.

The international conference “thermae in Context – the Roman Bath in Town and in Life” will take

place from 21st

until 24th

February 2013 at the cultural centre for encounter of Neumünster Abbey in

Luxembourg-City. During this conference, renowned archaeologists as well as young researchers

from at least ten different countries will meet, present their studies and discuss two aspects of the

social function of Roman bath buildings.

The conference will start with an excursion to the Roman vicus at Dalheim and its bath building. This

trip prepares the first session of the following day when three lectures cover the Roman settlement

at Dalheim.

The first item of the conference will be all activities which are not directly related to bathing and

body care. They can be ascertained from small finds from different areas of the bath building. The

second topic will be urban planning and the position of a bath building in the geographical and social

context of Roman settlements. The combination of these two issues should give new impetus to

future studies on Roman baths and thermae beyond the (usual) analyses of architecture, room

sequences and corresponding literary sources.

The conference will conclude with an excursion to Trier to experience the archaeological richness of

the spectacular Imperial and Barbara Baths.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is ideally situated to host this conference as the country has a

tradition of being an intermediary between French and German scholarship. The conference will

furthermore encourage scientific interchange on European and international basis.

Du 21 au 24 février 2013

Le colloque international « Les Thermes dans leurs Contextes - Le Bain Romain dans la Ville et dans

la Vie» se déroulera du 21 au 24 février 2013 au Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye de

Neumünster, à Luxembourg-Ville. Lors de cette rencontre, des chercheurs de renom et de jeunes

chercheurs internationaux se réuniront pour présenter des communications et discuter de deux

aspects de la fonction sociale des bains romains.

Le colloque débutera le 21 février par une visite du le vicus romain de Dalheim et de son bain. La

découverte de ce site archéologique majeur sera une entrée en matière à la première session du

colloque, le lendemain, avec trois communications sur Dalheim.

Le premier aspect thématique du colloque le 22 et 23 février traitera des diverses activités qui ont

pu avoir lieu dans les différentes salles des thermes, outre le bain ou la toilette, et qui peuvent être

déduites à la lumière du mobilier archéologique découvert. Le deuxième aspect abordera

l'urbanisme et la position des établissements thermaux dans l’espace géographique et social des

agglomérations antiques. L’approche combinée de ces deux aspects thématiques donnera une

nouvelle impulsion aux études futures sur les bâtiments de bain romains et dépasseront la simple

analyse des détails architecturaux et des sources littéraires.

Le colloque se clôturera le 24 février par une excursion à Trèves pour découvrir ou redécouvrir la

riche diversité des thermes dans cette ville impériale.

Le Grand-Duché de Luxembourg est idéalement situé pour accueillir cette conférence du fait de son

rôle fédérateur, notamment, entre les traditions de recherche française et allemande. Il est capital

pour la recherche en général de favoriser ces rencontres qui stimulent les échanges entres les

chercheurs européens… et d’ailleurs.
