Others go. We stay. For you.

For the last few years, there has been noticeable sustained consoli-dation in the field of professional labelling solutions. Small and medium businesses in particular are affected by the buying power of market leaders as they especially rely on spare parts availability, personal support, individual solutions and short reaction times.

All the more reason to provide a focus on this user group in our newly designed RENNER UPDATE. Read the reasons why – in addition to big names such as Heineken, Wüllner and Jacobs Douwe Egberts – the wine grower Les Fils Maye in the beautiful Valais chose a family-run manufacturer such as RENNER.

Without the direct link to and close collaboration with our development department, the Swiss sparkling wine pioneer Paul Gasser would not be able to profit from such a tailor-made solution which combines the highest level of flexibility with ease of use.

During reading, you will perhaps also notice that from one edition to the next, the mixture of news, practical reports and technology is becoming more and more varied. Our RENNER S solutions now also label olive oil, instant coffee and pet food. As usual, on the final page, we present to you the latest technical developments – in this case non-stop labelling with AutoSplicer as well as a new PSL solution for the widest range of pots.

And so you can see: we are on the ball. And remain in the market. For you and your business.

Happy reading!

1. Perfectly labelled: the Carsons Crisp and Maddens Mellow brands from Armagh Cider

2. Robust, flexible and low-maintenance: the RENNER S720-12 SERvo PSL in use

A fter more than 100 years of growing apples for large cider producers, a few years ago the Armagh Cider Company launched cider pro-

duction for the first time in the traditional ap-ple growing area of County Armagh to the south west of Belfast.

FLexiBLe SeLF-adheSive LaBeLLiNGArmagh Cider supplies the multi- award-winning cider brands Carsons Crisp and Maddens Mellow, as well as apple juice, punch and cider, vinegar and craft beers from other small manufactur-ers. In 2014, the company therefore began searching for a professional solution for self-ad hesive labels (PSL). The criteria: a high lev-el of flexibility and quality, short set-up times

reNNer S720-12 Servo PSLThe selected rotary machine with three PSL units and twelve servo-driven bottle pads today process-es around 100 combinations of 40 labels and eight

types of bottle. “Precise and reliable,” says Mark Throughton, who counts around four

set-up processes per day. “Thanks to the infeed and discharge starwheels which can be variably adjusted and the con-venient product selection by touch panel, the conversion is completed in ten minutes.”

Mark Throughton is also highly sat-isfied with the project progression and the

support from a direct contact person: “The in-stallation of the machine, which was delivered on time, ran smoothly. Our questions were always answered quickly and competently. We would definitely choose RENNER again.”

hEiNEKEN SLOVENSKO

All in the name of taxEngineering expertise for Heineken Slovensko: to avoid the need for new investment, RENNER converted the existing Krones machine into a u-ShaPe to accommodate an additional tax StriP to be applied.

W ith the famous German engineering ingenuity, RENNER took on a particularly tricky task for HEINEKEN Slovensko: for the international

sale of Strongbow® cider, which is produced under li-cence, the company was looking for a technical solu-tion for applying a U-shaped tax strip. This needed to go over the cap and also be aligned with the front, back and neck ring labels. The required alignment preclud-ed an external machine upgrade to include a separate module for tax strips. However, a complete rebuild was also out of the question for the customer.

coNverSioN oF the kroNeS MachiNeRENNER, which had already proved itself as a spare and format parts supplier for the existing Krones label-ling machine, found a solution after intensive analysis and consultation: the Krones machine fitted with three wet adhesive units was converted so that the body and neck ring labels are applied on the first unit, the tax strips on the second and the back label on the third. An additional device constructed in the machine discharge

area reverses the strip, which was initially stuck onto the front of the bottle, before it is fully pressed onto the back of the bottle by a special discharge starwheel. To create space for this process, RENNER made the foil unit required for labelling of the beer brand Zlatý Bažant height adjustable.

taSk coMPLetedChief Engineer Peter Barta is highly satisfied: “RENNER was the only supplier to accept this difficult task and successfully completed it. This means we can continue to process all the previous features and, if necessary, apply the new U-shaped tax strips.”

We would defi nitely choose RENNER again.

1. Thanks to the parts developed by RENNER, it was not necessary to have either a complete rebuild or an

external extension of the machine. 2. The premium cider from the UK has a tax strip for international sales

nyone who has seen a label from Les Fils Maye will certainly recognise the brand. Since the 1950s, this vineyard in one of the most beautiful regions of Valais in Switzer-

land has been using designs with original symbols and stylised figures who can be seen working in viticulture or out hunting.

coMBiNiNG ProveN aNd NeW techNoLoGYBecause the traditional family business bears in mind not only visual identity but also the efficiency of label-ling, in 2014 the decision was made to gradually switch from wet adhesive to self-adhesive labels (PSL). With

corresponding vision, the company promptly sought a suitably flexible alternative to the previous solution from Krones, which was limited to wet adhesive. The desired combi solution needed to have a robust design like the old machine to ensure it would still be reliably labelling in ten years’ time. As a further requirement, a visual bottle alignment with servo motors was to prevent the labels going over the glass seam.

Krones labelling machine. During the course of the evaluation, the Managing Director of Les Fils Mayes, Michel Duc, went to see a similar RENNER solution in place at Gengenbacher Winzer eG. Impressed by the robustness of the rotary machine that, unlike some of the competitors’ machines, caused no vibrations even at full load, Michel Duc also travelled to Günzburg for a personal meeting. “What impressed me most was the

in-house development expertise at RENNER, the huge spare parts storage area and the clear focus on invest-ment protection,” recalls the Managing Director. “I knew I had found the right supplier. At RENNER, almost all the components are designed with durability in mind, as demonstrated by features such as the three-point mounting of the labelling machine or the palette shafts made from solid material.”

iNcreaSiNG FLexiBiLitY, reduciNG coStSAs requested, the selected RENNER S1200-15 SERVO COMBI was delivered with a wet adhesive unit and three self-adhesive dispensers. A camera system

and servo-driven bottle pads reliably align the wine bottles using the glass seam. Les Fils Maye also pur-chased the drying tunnel for self-adhesive labelling from RENNER.

The main outcome of the modernisation project: problem-free, precise labelling with double the wet ad-hesive performance of the old machine (8000 bottles per hour). The wine producer also benefits from greater

freedom of design with attractive options such as the “no-label look.” Last but not least, Les Fils Maye also makes savings because, thanks to the new PSL technol-ogy, fewer costs will be incurred for format parts in future.

a Future-ProoF iNveStMeNt“For me, the robust design, the direct link with develop-ment and the durability of the solution, including spare parts availability, were the convincing arguments for RENNER,” summarises Michel Duc. “We are extremely satisfied with the solution, which has recently enabled us to make the smooth and economical transition to modern, efficient self-adhesive labelling.”

At RENNER, i was convinced by the robust design, the direct link with development and the clear focus on future-proofing and spare parts availability.

PreciSe aNd hiGhLY FLexiBLeThe new labelling solution that Paul Gasser was look-ing for his growing business had to be precise, flexible and economical – with minimal set-up times. “Labelling is absolutely crucial for our success; only the best is good enough,” says the sparkling wine pioneer known throughout the country. He had evaluated several solu-tions from Germany and Italy with his son, Urs, who is experienced in IT.

“We found the highest quality by far with RENNER,” says Paul Gasser, with a view to the excellent process-ing and high mechanical reliability of his approx. 8.5-t machine. An example: in order to apply a new, self-adhesive back label exactly in the centre, the operator merely needs to enter the bottle diameter, the width and height of the label and the distance of the left

But this is still not enough: in the future, labelling designs created by Gasser’s cus-tomers are to be loaded directly from the computer to the controller using a new interface. Paul Gasser sum-marises with satisfaction: “For what we need, we have got the best of what is currently available on the market – in terms of diversity, usability and durability.”

The AuToSplicer for reNNer S pSl is an independent, space-saving module for use in the beverage, food and pharmaceuti-cals industry. It can be easily upgraded if necessary. The format-inde-pendent functionality allows loading during operation. The outcome: non-stop production without laborious, cost-intensive conversions.

The machine operator’s only task: changing the label reels as re-quired and preparing the adhesive process between the application reel and the supply reel. Smooth running: the splicer and machine communicate digitally; an optional BUS system is available on request.

Set-up costs are almost zero: only the locking bolt for the reel pick-up is to be adjusted to the respective carrier tape height (20–148 mm). This can also be done during production at the supply reel. The result: minimal downtime, more output, more turnover.

The beNefiT To you: flexible design for almost all formats, high output and minimal set-up costs.

Whether it be for ice cream, yoghurt, soup or dressing: self-adhesive labels not only look great on the pot, but can also be used very flexibly. At up to 120 pots per minute, they can label almost any format – wrap around, with no- label look or with base label (e.g. for tax codes or content information).

Non-stop production at minimal cost: with the new autoSPLicer for self-adhesive labels (PSL), RENNER reduces set-up times to almost zero.

Another milestone for RENNER and its customers: the highly efficient PSL techNoLoGY is now also being used to label pots in a wide variety of formats.
