The building’s rigorously structuredexposed concrete façade faces thePacific and stores up the thermal energy absorbed during the day. Dueto the limited number of openings,it offers adequate protection fromextreme sun radiation.

The concrete was colored with iron oxide pigments to reflect thereddish tones of the desert, allowingthe highest degree of optical integration with the landscape. Ein Gästehaus auf dem Mars.

Living and working in the desert.The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is located 2,600metres above sea level in the Cerro Paranal region of theChilean Atacama desert. The ESO Hotel situated in direct proximityfunctions as a guest house for the scientists conducting research inthe observatory for temporary periods. The building was designedby the Munich architectural firm Auer+Weber+Architekten. Withits exposed concrete pigmented by iron oxide, the monolithicconstruction fits in perfectly with the desert backdrop, which isreminiscent of a Martian landscape. The thermally inert propertiesof the massive concrete structure have a favourable influenceon the interior temperatures, since the extreme temperaturevariations between day and night can be buffered. In this way,the thermal energy stored by the concrete over the course ofthe day is transferred gradually to the inside rooms at night,creating a pleasant room temperature.

Arbeiten und Wohnen in der Wüste.Auf 2600 Metern Höhe am Cerro Paranal in der chilenischenAtacama-Wüste liegt das European Southern Observatory (ESO).Das ESO Hotel direkt in der Nähe ist ein Gästehaus für dieWissenschaftler, die zu Forschungszwecken für eine bestimmteZeit im Observatorium der Europäischen Südsternwarte arbeiten.Gestaltet wurde das Bauwerk vom Münchner ArchitekturbüroAuer+Weber+Architekten. Der monolithisch wirkende Bau fügtsich durch den mit Eisenoxid pigmentierten Sichtbeton perfektin die an eine Marslandschaft erinnernde Wüste. Das thermischträge Verhalten der massiven Betonstruktur wirkt sich günstigauf die Temperierung der Innenräume aus, da die extremenTemperaturschwankungen zwischen Tag und Nacht abgepuffertwerden. So kann die im Laufe des Tages im Beton gespeicherteWärmeenergie nachts nach und nach ans Gebäudeinnere abge-geben werden, so dass ein angenehmes Raumklima entsteht.

Das Gebäude – im wechselnden Licht Teil der Landschaft.In der von starken Fallwinden geprägten Einöde wirkt der Bauwie ein durch Erosion freigelegtes großes Plateau. Das Gebäudehat nur eine Fassade in Richtung Pazifik und der untergehendenSonne. Hier auf der windabgewandten Seite liegen alle Hotel-zimmer und Büros. Die Absicht der Architekten war es, einen Ortzu schaffen, der von der Geschwindigkeit einer sich ständigfortentwickelnden Technologie, wie sie bei den benachbartenTeleskopanlagen zu beobachten ist, unabhängig erscheint. DenWissenschaftlern werden nach der anstrengenden Forschungs-arbeit im Observatorium die notwendigen Annehmlichkeiten undRegenerationsmöglichkeiten im Sinne einer Oase geboten. Diewarme erdverbundene Farbe des Betons unterstreicht diesenKonzeptansatz.

The building – part of the landscape in the changing light.In this desert wilderness shaped by strong gusts of wind, thebuilding resembles a large plateau cleared by erosion. Thestructure has only one façade which faces the Pacific and thesetting sun. It is here on the wind-sheltered side that all thehotel rooms and offices are situated. The intention of the archi-tects was to create a location that appears to be free from thesteady progression of technology, such as that observed in theneighbouring telescope facilities. After their arduous researchwork in the observatory, scientists are offered the necessaryamenities and the opportunity to regenerate, in the sense of anoasis. The warm earth tones of the concrete underline this conceptual approach.

Ein etwas riskantes Unterfangen, da mansich bei der Sichtbetonkonstruktion niemals sicher sein konnte,dass es durch die Pigmentierung vor Ort nicht zu unerwünschtenFarbveränderungen kommen würde. Umso überraschender wardas unerwartet gute Ergebnis: Gerade die anfänglich befürchte-ten Unregelmäßigkeiten schufen angenehm changierende, gutmit den wechselnden Tönungen der Wüste korrespondierendeOberflächen.

BAYFERROX® pigments – as if made specifically for thedesert. For the ESO Hotel project, pigmentation was undertaken directly on the construction site. A somewhat risky venture,since one could never be sure with the exposed concreteconstruction whether local pigmentation might cause unwantedcolor changes. Therefore, the high-quality outcome was all the more surprising: the very irregularities – initially the cause of concern – created pleasantly varying surfaces that harmonisewith the changing hues of the desert.

In order to formally integrate the overall construction within thesurrounding scenery, and even allow the building to appear likea piece of solidified landscape, colored concrete was used instead of painted concrete. In this way, the reduced exteriorappearance of the ESO Hotel could be supported by a perfectmatch to the environmental hues. And this with amazingly lowconstruction costs of just 8.7 million euros. This relatively lowcontract price is attributable on the one hand to a superb feat ofplanning and logistics as a “work package” and on the other, tothe construction concept – a “refined building shell”.

Um das Bauvolumen mit der umgebenden Landschaft förmlich-verschmelzen bzw. wie ein Stück verfestigte Landschaft in Erschei-nung treten zu lassen, wurde durchgefärbter Beton verwendet,statt ihn anzustreichen. So konnte das reduzierte äußereErscheinungsbild des ESO Hotels durch die perfekte Farban-passung an die Umgebung noch verstärkt werden.Und das beierstaunlich niedrigen Baukosten von 8,7 Mio. Euro. Diese relativgeringe Bausumme ist zum einen durch eine planerisch-logisti-sche Meisterleistung als „work-package“ und zum anderen durchdas Ausführungskonzept eines „veredelten Rohbaus“ zu erklären.
