In our society there is an increasing demand for participation in shaping our built environ-ment. Without civic participation, few major building projects can go ahead. Furthermore, the knowledge of the users with regard to uti-lization and how spaces are experienced is in fact an important tool for architects during the design process. This volume presents examples of success-ful participation, according to a method devel-oped in the practice test, in which the focus

is on communication about and by means of atmospheres. Realized pilot projects are sup-plemented by a wide range of participatory options —presented as practical guidelines that can be used for one’s own individual purposes. Therefore the book invites direct application.Architecture Is Participation is not only target-ed towards architects and architectural agents, but also towards communities, administra-tions, and especially the users of the city and architecture.

For more than 40 years, the architect and city planner Jan Gehl has been involved in rede-signing or creating new designs for squares, streets, even entire city districts, for the ben-efit of the residents. He bases himself on in-sights that he has gained through many years of studying city situations in various countries. By observing megacities in detail himself, Gehl develops methods and strategies for bringing significant positive change to dysfunctional and inhospitable urban landscapes. This takes account of demographic developments, chang-ing lifestyles, and design processes. The most important principle behind Jan Gehl’s urban

planning on a human scale is that the urban space has to be experienced at the speed of a pedestrian, instead of from a vehicle. This is the only way to succeed in making both tradi-tional metropolises and rapidly growing cities in developing and emerging countries into “cit-ies for people”. The book presents Jan Gehl’s work in the area of new buildings, as well as the redesign of urban spaces and streets. Presentations of his planning models through text and images, as well as of his planning principles and methods, illuminate how vibrant, safe, sustainable, and healthy cities can be created in future.

english

The concept of relational space in urban-ism—understanding the space of the city as produced by society—is connected with an understanding of architecture unfolding in situ-ations. Urban space is induced by architecture, space is produced while experiencing archi-tecture within a situation. There is a dialecti-cal interplay between architectonic material (intra-architectonic reality) and usage and ac-tion (urban reality). Thus, an architectonic situ-

ation can be interpreted as performative in the sense of performativity as it has emerged in the discourse over the last decade. The every-day urban life of the city, with all its potential and conflicts, is taken into consideration. Ana-lyzing the urban is not enough. This discourse is about Urban Design. Is architectural design one part, and the actualization of architecture in a performative incident another? Does Ur-ban Design need different practices?

germanrefitting suburbiAErneuerung der Stadt des 20. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland und in den USA

Johann Jessen / Frank Roost (eds.)

The adaptation of existing, twentieth-century buildings to present-day requirements is gain-ing importance as a planning task. This applies in particular to suburbia, which is dominated by single-family detached houses and industrial areas, and whose urban qualities are scarcely compatible with the requirements typical of city centers. In this book, planners and urban researchers present existing and possible future approach-es for the restructuring of suburbia in the USA

and Germany. This involves a wide variety of tasks, such as increasing energy efficiency, retrospective densification, the creation of new usage mixes, and the restructuring of public space. In the USA, according to the con-cept of “suburban refitting”, many measures for upgrading suburbia are already being imple-mented. These strategies can also serve as a model for improving suburban structures in Germany, albeit in an adapted form.

The unimaginable happened in Suwon, South Korea: a neighborhood played the future: For the EcoMobility World Festival 2013, the 4,300 residents of the Haenggung-dong neighbor-hood removed their 1,500 cars from the quar-ter and lived an ecomobile lifestyle for a full month. Neighborhood in Motion portrays the process of the unique mise-en-scène from idea to im-plementation; the unprecedented cooperation of local government with community groups, local businesses, international agencies, and cities worldwide; the dedication of community

volunteers to protect and defend a car-free neighborhood; and the happiness that pervad-ed the community as it enjoyed car-free streets and open spaces for the people. Stunning photos demonstrate how ugly, dusty, and noisy streets were converted into livable spaces. And how the absence of 1,500 empty metal cages from the streets freed up oppor-tunities for community-building and neighbor-hood dialogue, and provided condition for safe locomotion and dignity for elderly and handi-capped. The festival exalted imagination and encouraged creativity by all.

Housing is a basic need that, for many all over the world, remains unmet or inadequate. In order to ensure the availability of quality living space for everyone, architecture and urban de-velopment can contribute significantly to find-ing new solutions. The challenge of affordable housing lies in achieving an optimum relation-ship between costs and the “home quality“ value, which is dependent on many local pa-rameters and cultural preferences.

In light of this and based on examples of exceptional residential buildings, this book presents not only theoretical approaches but also strategies for creating affordable living spaces. These strategies can be compared by analyzing projects in their economic, social, and urban development contexts. The central question is: how can different approaches for creating affordable residential space be applied and translated to other contexts?

Kristien Ring AA PROJECTS (ed.) in cooperation with the Senate Depart-ment for Urban Development and the Environment, Berlin

Cities such as Berlin are faced with new ar-chitectural and urban planning challenges, not only on account of their constant growth, but also because of changing ways of life. Urban living seeks to discuss future forms of urban living and to consider their design and so-cial influences. How can residential building strengthen urban structures and provide new opportunities through densification? How can monostructures be broken up and open spaces be upgraded? And how can architecture meet

the requirements of new forms of cohabita-tion, either owing to a broader social mix or to the combination of living and working? This book presents convincing concepts which show that affordable residential space can also have a high structural quality. Exemplary de-signs and solutions from the international Ur-ban Living Workshop, which more than thirty international architecture offices took part in, provide excellent examples of the potential qualities of future residential construction.

Conflicts around urban development and plan-ning issues represent an important dimension of urban politics. Issues of social cohesion and democratic representation are all the more rel-evant in times when cities are undergoing a severe economic crisis and when local politics tends to meet its challenges with ‘post-politi-cal’ responses. The relevance of local conflicts as moments of political mobilization is particu-larly apparent as institutions and procedures of urban politics fall short of meeting the expecta-tions of local communities. The case-studies from cities throughout the world explore the potential of planning con-flicts to raise questions about urban democ-

racy. They point at some of its key challenges: the multi-scalar nature of urban policies; the tension between ‘policing’ and ‘politics’, be-tween institutional control and popular resis-tance; the spatial dimension of protest and social mobilization; the limits to institutional practices of citizen participation and conflict resolution; the struggle for new democratic ex-ercises and forms of citizenship. The volume is a contribution to rethinking con-flicts in urban development and planning in a multidisciplinary perspective, raising questions about the role of planning theory and practice in turning conflict into a transformative re-source for local policy.

Auf dem Weg zur stadt als Campus represents active, knowledge-based urban development in everyday life. A nationwide network of city developers and universities, together with mu-nicipalities, educational and cultural providers, initiatives, property developers and housing as-sociations, as well as economic stakeholders, show how the city can become a campus. The settings for this are primarily small and medi-um-sized cities, as well as polycentric regions. Innovative design possibilities, cooperative associations, new business models, reflexive urban communities, and liveable cities are cre-ated as part of this process. Those involved cul-

tivate an interplay between “established” and “creative” urban developers, beyond depart-mental boundaries, bringing together bottom-up and top-down approaches. With practical examples and contributions from Ute Burkhardt-Bodenwinkler, Christopher Dell, Alexandra den Heijer, Martin Kohler, Mark Michaeli / Nadja Häupl, Sven Sappelt, Kai Vöckler / Heiner Blum, and interviews with Frauke Burgdorff, Ulrich Hatzfeld, Christian Huttenloher, Stefan Krämer, Hilmar von Lojewski, Rudolf Scheuvens, and many active network members

english/germanArchitecture in context Developing Urban Living Environments Beyond the Master Plan and Facade Discussions

Kay von Keitz / Sabine Voggenreiter (eds.)

Our built environment raises new issues daily—whether from a cultural, technical, economic, social, political, or aesthetic point of view. However, all too often discussions about architecture and urban development are based on superficial images, or a master plan is demanded that provides a comprehensive solution. How can we really do justice to the complexity of the urban, and in what context should planning be presented today?

In this book, international architects, planners, and cultural theorists describe and analyze al-ternative urban development strategies, the planning of the unplannable, the appropriation of urban spaces, and the activation of unex-ploited potential—from mobility to migration, from spatial interventions to social transforma-tions.

germanstAdtdenker Ein Spielraum für urbane Entdeckungen

Turit Fröbe (ed.)

Tell me what you see! How can one create a wide platform for communicating with citizens who may never have thought about topics such as architecture, the city, or building cul-ture before? How can one get them to adopt the viewpoint of a traveller towards their own city and to embark on a journey of discovery with a completely open mind? Is it at all pos-sible to come to a city as an outsider and to bring new outside perspectives to its resi-dents? How does one achieve this objective without appearing presumptuous?

This book documents the model project “Du siehst was, was ich nicht sehe – als Stadtden-ker in Paderborn”, which was carried out as part of the ExWoSt research field “Baukultur in der Praxis”. It offers cities, groups, and inter-ested citizens a wealth of suggestions, instruc-tions, and guidelines for surprising journeys of discovery within their supposedly familiar everyday city, with its unnoticed sights by the wayside, its hidden urban qualities, and its al-legedly ugly aspects, which suddenly reveal a charm of their own upon closer observation.

energieAtlAswerkbericht 1Zukunftskonzept Erneuerbares Wilhelmsburg

IBA Hamburg GmbH / Umweltbundes-amt / TU Darmstadt (eds.)

Based on the example of the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg, this book presents a stra-tegic approach to the energy conversion of a district, which aims to be almost exclusively supplied by renewable and locally generated energy by 2050. For four years, this concept was applied practically as part of the Interna-tional Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg and now the first report is available. This volume, published by the IBA Hamburg GmbH, the Fed-eral Environment Agency, and TU Darmstadt, sets the implementation and further develop-

ment of the concept in the context of current discussions about the energy transition. Meth-ods are reflected on against the background of nationwide experiences, and the social and economic viability of the whole scheme is examined critically. This analytical process culminates in suggestions for the ongoing de-velopment of the climate protection concept of Renewable Wilhelmsburg. The three editors present the necessary technical measures, as well as the social and political framework con-ditions for the forthcoming years.

Since late 2006 the International Building Ex-hibition (IBA) Hamburg has made the concept of the “Leap across the Elbe” a reality, and in doing so has provided considerable sup-port for the urban, environmental, and social development of the Elbe Islands and Harburg Upriver Port. Under its three key themes—“Cosmopolis”, “Metrozones” and “Cities and Climate Change”—the IBA has also given real impetus to international discussions on the fu-

ture of major cities. This book documents the projects carried out over the seven years, as well as novel approaches taken by the IBA, such as in the areas of education and participa-tion processes, which will influence policy and everyday planning far beyond the end of the IBA in 2013. In addition, long-term partners of the IBA provide an initial summary of the cur-rent state of affairs.

New Series: gmp focus [lx648]

The architecture partnership gmp was founded in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg. gmp became known especially on account of its airport architecture: in 1975, Berlin-Tegel was opened as a drive-in airport. It is not only their projects such as the exhibi-tion center Neue Messe Leipzig, the reconstruction and roofing of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, or the Berlin Central Station that have gained international acclaim. In China, they have realized the trade fair and congress centers in Nanning and Shenzhen, as well as the Universiade Sports Center and the Oriental Sports Center in Shang-hai. Further buildings include the opera houses in Chongqing, Qing-

dao, and Tianjin, as well as the National Museum of China in Beijing and the new West Railway Station in Tianjin. gmp has been awarded more than 590 prizes in national and international competitions, of which more than 310 first prizes, and numerous distinctions for ex-emplary architecture. They have realized more than 370 buildings up until today. A new series of publications documents an exemplary selection of gmp buildings, by means of detailed texts and photo galleries by renowned culture journalists, architecture critics, and photographers.

The Grand Theater is not a building with a typi-cal façade with wall and window surfaces, but is contained within a well-positioned curtain of frosted glass panels. The magazine Baumeister comments: “The light penetrating from the in-side to the outside, as well as the reflection of sun, clouds, and water on the multilayered and

staggered glass surfaces, present the building in ever-changing, mystical lighting moods.” In this volume, the responsible architects present the architectural design by means of texts, im-ages, and plans. An essay by the architecture journalist Dirk Meyhöfer discusses the Grand Theater.

Building a historic city museum in the capital city of a country that is experiencing vehement political and economic turmoil was a challenge for all those involved. What is the social pur-pose of this museum? How should it present itself from an architectural and urban develop-ment point of view? What has emerged is a solitaire like an inverted pyramid, with layered terraces jutting outwards increasingly towards

the top, amidst an artificially laid out park with water features, which provides large areas for outdoor exhibitions. The responsible architects present the project in this volume. The architecture of the Hanoi Museum is illuminated by means of plans, images, and texts. The renowned specialized journalist Falk Jaeger sets the building within the context of architectural history.

A new culture park has been created in recent years in the Chinese harbor city of Tianjin. The Tianjin Grand Theater occupies a key positi-on on this site, entering into a dialog with its architectural surroundings. The circular form of the roof construction relates to that of the Natural History Museum there in such a way that it creates a connection between the earth-bound museum and the seemingly floating theater building.

In this volume, the responsible architects illu-minate the Grand Theater by means of texts and images, and show how syntheses can be created between western and eastern tradi-tions in a highly modern building. The architec-ture critic Jürgen Tietz discusses the building in a detailed critique.

The State Ballet School Berlin is unique in Ger-many, because it combines a general school education with professional training. For the restructuring of the school and the new buil-ding, a design was required that takes into account the flow of movement between the dance school and the school, as well as the dy-namic movement of dancing itself. Furthermo-re, the new appearance was to reflect the high international reputation of the establishment.

In other words: the architectural and theore-tical identities had to be congruent with each other. In this volume, the responsible architects pre-sent the building through texts and images, supplemented by a commentary by the ar-chitecture journalist Falk Jaeger. This is roun-ded off by opinions of the users, who experi-ence the building every day from an esthetic and functional point of view.

Shanghai is a challenging city for architects. During the boom years, the city expanded massively especially in Pudong, the special economic zone. This went hand in hand with extensive building. One of the exemplary buil-dings is the Poly Plaza, a high-rise ensemble comprising various tall buildings in crystalline forms, which defines the urban space and creates spectacular visual axes.

In this volume, the Poly Plaza is presented by the responsible architects and illuminated by means of images and plans. This is supplemen-ted by a detailed critique of the ensemble by the architectural journalist Christian Brensing.

Tianjin, as a harbor city where many major rail-way lines and roads meet, represents a central transport hub to the south of Beijing. The West Station lies on the high-speed stretch of rail-way between Beijing and Shanghai, where 24 railway lines meet. “The railway hall in Tianjin is a reversal of the typical type of hall that shel-ters the platforms and tracks (…) The barrel vault is contained by a right-angled structure on

four square pillars, as is typical of many func-tional and commercial buildings by gmp”, sum-marizes the architecture critic Bernhard Schulz in a detailed essay, in which he illuminates the particularities of the train station, as well as its classical references. Library, concert, and reading room—the Hans-Sachs-Haus has been a multifunctional buil-ding from the beginning, dedicated to cultural events. The industrial town of Gelsenkirchen, up-and-coming in the 1920s, wanted to pre-sent itself as a modern city. After the war, large parts of the exceptional heritage of brick ex-pressionism had been destroyed or damaged. In recent years, gmp Architekten have built a new building into an old façade, as a success-

ful example of building within existing structu-res. In this volume, the responsible architects pre-sent their approach and show the particulari-ties of this task by means of plans and ima-ges. Contemporary Japanese architecture has reached a turning point: The ever-smaller, ever-whiter, ever-more minimalist designs no longer can respond to society’s demands: Norihiko Dan is an architect and urban designer of a new breed: Cosmopolitan, talented, and will-ing to take the risk to be different. Environmen-tally sensitive, rich in design, and with a great competence in structures and his “Universal

Form theory”, Dan integrates architecture and landscape. He advocates a new street rejuve-nation type city planning with his new town-house methods. He is involved in such projects as the Taipei International Airport, Sun-Moon-Lake Visitor Center, and rejuvenation for To-kyo’s Muromachi District. This book introduces Dan’s exciting practice to an international audi-ence for the first time.

For more than 30 years, the Düsseldorf archi-tecture firm HPP has been designing, plan-ning, and building the office building on the campus by the Münsteraner Kolde Ring for the insurance company LVM. The latest office tower, designed by Duk-Kyu Ryang and HPP, represents a—temporary—highlight, which is also called “crystal” owing to its unusual cu-bature. The glass sculpture of a building spirals upwards at an angle and unconventionally and

is connected harmoniously to the older neigh-boring building by means of a bridge made entirely of glass. This book presents the sig-nificant new building, which provides space for 400 workspaces, training and conference rooms, and whose expressive architectural lan-guage is reflected in the interior design, as well as in the furnishing, the color scheme, and the artistic aspects of the building.

The origins of the architecture office nps tchoban voss go back as far as 1931. Founded in Hamburg, the group practice now also has offices in Berlin and Dresden and is one of the most active and successful offices in each of the three cities.Quality living and work environments and at-tractive and stimulating urban and personal surroundings can only be created by taking a holistic approach to planning that encompas-ses the entire spectrum of environmental de-sign, from urban design to the building details.

For the architects, the principle of sustainability applies not only to construction but must also be seen as an aesthetic category. This book shows examples of the office’s recent projects that reveal how nps tchoban voss applies their notion of quality from the scale of the local neighborhood to the design of interiors, and how at a formal level, they continue to create modern architecture that eschews short-lived architectural fashions in favor of creating eco-nomic architecture of lasting aesthetic value.

Oerlikon, a district in the north of Zurich, marks the start of a linear city parallel to Zurich, which is in the process of becoming the most popu-lous conurbation in Switzerland. This interface is also the location of the largest high-rise ensemble in Switzerland, which represents a radical feature of this new urban formation and was designed jointly by atelier ww and Max Dudler. The four high-rises surround a square and form an urban quad, which was intended to be the catalyst for the development of the

surrounding district. “Finally there is a square again”, was how Raymond Hood described the Rockefeller Center in 1929, and both back then and now in this case it was about importing a very particular urban vision. The high-rise ensemble in Oerlikon is a consequential and emblematic group of buildings, a city within a city. This publication documents the complex design and planning history of this building complex through texts, photographs, plans, and sketches.

The Cologne architecture firm JSWD dem-onstrates the long-term benefits of an inter-national presence. JSWD Architekten are currently involved in major projects in Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, and Aus-tria, in some cases with European partners. An understanding of building quality, urban design, and competence in the field of sustain-able construction are always central aspects of these. JSWD are involved in a wide range of building projects—from a school to a research institute, from a residential building to a mu-seum—and each project is conceived from

scratch. “Architecture and urban development have to reflect diversity”—this credo under-pins the designs by JSWD. They have shown on many occasions that they are not afraid of size, nor do they have any reserve about designing the smallest of details within their particular context. The common feature of all their work is the search for homogeneity with regard to the building volume, form, materi-als, and color. This harmonious architecture by JSWD is therefore multifaceted and coherent at the same time.

Architect, city planner and construction engi-neer, civil servant and private entrepreneur, structural engineer and inventor: Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves (1788–1864) was all of these. He is regarded as one of the leading protago-nists of classicism, along with Schinkel, von Klenze, and Moller. Influenced by study trips to France, Italy, and England and later by the form concepts of Berlin classicism, from 1814 he went on to have a strong influence on the urban development of Hannover into an impe-rial city, at the behest of the crown. Tradition and modernity characterize the era of his oeuvre. This volume summarizes con-tributions to the two-day symposium “‘… von

vorzüglicher Monumentalität’: Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves in Hannover”, realized by the VolkswagenStiftung, in cooperation with the Lavesstiftung. It also places the work of the architect into a wide social and historical con-text, up until the present day. Architectural training during the Biedermeier era, structural physics, building regulations, and architecture discourses after 1800 are also addressed, as is the modern-day perspective on Laves—not only against the background of the rebuilding of Herrenhausen Castle. With contributions by Werner Oechslin, Dieter Bartetzko, Michael Mönninger, Adrian von Butt lar, Sven Kotulla, among others

The undisputed significance of Georg Moller in architectural history and architectural theory of the nineteenth century, and his considerable influence on the urban development of Darm-stadt right up until the current plans of today, stands in stark contrast to the reception of his work and the perception of the architect in his hometown itself. It is especially with regard to this that the project “Darmstädter Stadtfoto-graf/in” (Darmstadt City Photographer) pro-vides the ideal opportunity to acquaint oneself with the architect in an unconventional man-

ner and thereby to visualize artistically the high quality of his buildings, in some cases only fragmentarily preserved. This leads not only to a wider, deserved appreciation of his work, but also to the possibility of a creative reinterpreta-tion of his oeuvre.

Olaf Gisbertz (ed.)

The municipal and congress hall represents a cultural phenomenon that was targeted to-wards a mass public already back in the nine-teenth century. During the time of the restruc-turing of political systems after 1945, it was a symbol of a new cultural beginning throughout Europe. In the meantime, the spatial and tem-poral parameters for the construction of cultur-al buildings have changed and there is a ques-tioning of the value and role of an architecture that has increasingly fallen into disrepute after more than 40 years, also on account of eco-nomic and energy efficiency considerations. Furthermore, a lack of experience with regard

to modernization often leads to the loss of ar-chitectural quality and monumental heritage potential. This book places the structural aspects of the municipal and congress hall into the context of architectural and social history from 1945 and draws attention to the aesthetics of the archi-tecture, as well as to the social and political background to the development of the munici-pal and congress hall as a building type. It intro-duces a wide range of theoretical and practical expertise in the sustainable management of monuments.

Dobrovic in Dubrovnik traces the past and the present of avant-garde modern architecture constructed in the nineteen-thirties, in the Mediterranean landscape of the south Dalma-tian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Comprehensive historical, theoretical, and phenomenological readings of events and forms, in two essays by architects Krunoslav Ivanišin and Ljiljana Blagojevic respectively, describe a specific yet, by its spirit, universal Venture in Modern Archi-tecture. Spatially condensed to an area within ten square miles and temporally to less than

ten years, these quintessentially modern villas, gardens, and hotels built seventy years ago by the architect Nikola Dobrovic (1897–1967), are presented through previously unpublished original design drawings, black and white pho-tographs from the period of their construction, and the contemporary color photographs by Wolfgang Thaler. The color plates depict pre-cisely the beauty in decay of heroic works of international modern architecture and convey admirably their meaningful Mediterranean re-silience.

This scholarly guide about the tangible and in-tangible heritage of the nineteenth and twen-tieth centuries district of Downtown Cairo presents a detailed survey of the plans and typologies of a great number of apartment buildings and links the flats with the memories and stories of their inhabitants, mapping the changes in the use of the space during time, and so giving precious hints to understand the changes in the Cairo society. The books contains around 45 building-sheets with technical and historical descriptions, or-ganized in a chronological order to give a pan-

orama of the development of Downtown’s architecture. Short texts in-between will give insider glimpses on specific aspects, such as historical backgrounds, technical innovations, narratives of private spaces. The buildings will be connected through three thematic maps to navigate and discover Downtown: the Dolce Vita Tour includes cinemas, bars, cafes, the houses of the stars; the Romantic Trail shows buildings with elaborated stairs, interesting balconies, fascinating details; the Puristic Ar-chitecture Trail contains buildings with clear lines.

The realization is gradually dawning in Europe that many immigrants from Muslim countries are here to stay and are seeking to be natu-ralized—and therefore have the right to build buildings in which to practice their religion. The current building activities frequently cause tension, also for esthetic reasons, within so-ciety well into the mosque associations. The question of how the structure and appearance of a mosque can gain acceptance by society is a subject of heated debate especially in

Western Europe. 14 interior architect students from RheinMain University have pursued this question and studied the traditional spatial concepts of mosques creatively. The range of ideal-typical designs shows not only the rich design potential harbored by this construction task, but also how contact between Islam and a western context could lead to a new, intercul-tural architecture, which reflects the reality of our living environment, without compromising commitment to tradition.

The spaces within a school reflect the com-munity and ideals of the group of people they were conceived and built for. The social life of the micro-society of the school has always unfolded in communally used spaces that pro-vide links between designated spaces such as classrooms, subject rooms etc.: access and in-frastructural areas, open spaces, outdoor spac-es. These spaces in between therefore pro-vide the stage for the social life of the school. Based on considering the designs of 30 archi-tecturally significant school buildings from the

The monolithic parking block colossi from the nineteen-sixties and seventies still dominate the appearance of many inner cities at home and abroad today. However, in contemporary urban planning, the predominant paradigms are not longer the segregation of usages and the car-friendly city, but the notion of a densely inhabited and vibrant city center that is char-acterized by small-scale usages. From an eco-nomic point of view, single-function parking blocks are also questionable in view of the ever increasing price of land. This book, which is targeted towards architects and engineers, as well as politicians, inves-

tors, and operators, is intended to spark dis-cussion and to show by means of surprising designs what potential these parking blocks harbour. How can such functional buildings be integrated better into their surroundings? What alternatives or complementary usages are conceivable? How can empty roof surfaces be used meaningfully? The presentations are supplemented by contributions from the point of view of the real estate industry, engineering technology, and cultural sciences.

The Kuppelsaal in Hannover by Paul Bonatz and Friedrich Eugen Scholer, which was opened in 1914, is still the largest concert hall on the European mainland, with its 3,600 seats, and soon after it was built it became a striking land-mark of the city. In 1962, however, the imposing, almost 50-me-ter-high dome was divided off in the interior by means of a flat ceiling at cornice level, to improve the acoustics—robbing the unique spatial monument of its overwhelming effect,

without achieving any acoustic improvement worth mentioning. This book sets out to draw attention to a mag-nificent building and to direct the long overdue debate about its renovation. The contributions by renowned architecture researchers illumi-nate the history of the creation and destruc-tion of the dome, while the book also presents visionary designs and concepts for the future of the legendary domed hall, as a congress center and philharmonic hall.

The Ralf Schmitz residential building company, with its headquarters in Kempen/Niederrhein, can celebrate an impressive anniversary in October 2014. It can look back proudly over an eventful and vibrant history of 150 years. It was built up over five generations and devel-oped further continuously, proving that it was capable of adapting to the changing social re-quirements of the times and of providing suit-able solutions. On the occasion of this significant anniversary, this presentation traces the developmental stages that have shaped the history of the

company, from its foundation to the present day, and illuminates them through texts and images. The focus is especially on considering the wealth of building projects that have been designed and realized over the course of the 150 years. This seems all the more important considering that there are countless critiques of great and not so great architects, but only very few that deal with the complex oeuvre of a building company and therefore illuminate the architectural works from a different qualita-tive perspective.

After years of abstinence, the building of the Federal Constitutional Court is once again making an appearance on German television screens, in reports about the activities of the highest German court. After its extensive ren-ovation, the judges have moved back into their traditional public office building, next to the Karlsruhe castle. The architect Paul Baumgar-ten built the building in 1965–1969, which does not represent the power of the state with imposing imperial architecture, but instead

embodies a free, democratic spirit with its modern, transparent building forms. Its careful restoration was faithful to its origins and now the previously somewhat unnoticed building shines in a new splendor and can be appre-ciated as one of the earliest examples of the new state architecture of the young Federal Republic of Germany. This book illuminates its building history, reports about the history and work of the court, and presents the building: and its renovation in detail.

Having a population of approximately 30,000, the Zamet district in the western part of Croatia’s largest port city Rijeka was lacking space both for the local authorities and for sports and leisure activities. With the construction of the Zamet Centre, all facilities were united under the same roof. At the same time, multi-differentiated public spaces indoors and outdoors as well as new north-south pathways have been created. The hybrid building which includes a multi-purpose sports hall, the district’s public library, the local authorities’ offices, and a number of shops has been embedded into Rijeka’s typical sloping topography charac-terised by its Mediterranean vegetation. With its peculiar appearance that looks like parallel ribbons swinging up and down, the centre forms a unique urban landscape whose individual components have, however, been suited to the surrounding residential and school buildings. The accessible rooftop gardens and terraces as well as the square in front of Zamet Centre – all of which are made from a total of about 51,000 pentagonal ceramic slabs – expand the adjacent park in the north and invite passers-by to take a stroll or have a casual conversation. The arrangement of the single parts of the building is deliberately non-hierarchical. Instead, the building complex recalls a progression of tectonic upheavals. This new form of arranging public usable and open areas does not only do justice to the local demand for community facilities and public space. Moreover, it creates an offer that reaches far beyond the district’s borders. Since its inauguration in 2009, Zamet Centre has established itself as a meeting place and as a venue for different social gatherings such as sports events, concerts, and celebrations.

The financial crisis since 2008 has brought the development of the Rotterdam Central District (RCD) to a standstill. What used to be the lively heart of the city has become a run-down office boulevard with a tremendous vacancy rate and an inhospitable ground level dominated by large scale infrastructure. There are ambitious blueprints for the RCD, but realisation seems highly unlikely. To kick-start the redevelopment (which is expected by 2016), on the platform of the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam ‘Making City’ (2012), ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles] initiated twenty-one projects connected with one continuous route: The Luchtsingel, a temporary wooden bridge, will give the area back to pedestrians, furthermore it will bind scarce economical-cultural developments in the area and reconnect the city centre with the surrounding districts. More than a piece of infrastructure, the Luchtsingel turns out to be a catalyst for initiatives and a backbone for city development. To work within the current economical context, new strategies for development are needed. The Test Site Rotterdam uses a collaborative and incremental approach, with unusual alliances, new micro-investment business models and adaptive design instruments. The construction of the Luchtsingel for instance is kick-started through crowdfunding. Everyone can buy a piece of bridge with their name on it. It seems an ideal way to pull resources in times of crisis and at the same time create a sense of ownership, strongly rooting the project within society.

In certain parts of the world, the founding of new towns and extensive urban development are still going ahead rapidly at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In Europe, on the other hand, which already has a high degree of urbanization, more cautious interventions into the urban structure are required. By means of both permanent and temporary interventions, attempts are being made to meet the complex requirements of a changing modern society. The interdisciplinary cooperation of partners from different fields such as culture, architec-ture, and economics, and the participation and

initiatives of citizens play an important role in this. This volume pursues the question of how in-dividual projects not only stand out within the complexity of urban structures, but can also bring about long-lasting change. This book presents 47 European examples from the Urban Intervention Award Berlin that showed quite surprising solutions, and which received awards from the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment in 2010 and 2013.

Waste Management (Addis Ababa), Water Management (Lima), Res-source Efficiency (Urumqui, China), New Town Development (Tehran-Region) and Governance for Sustainability (Hyderabad, India).Outcomes have been generated in six thematic fields of action, serving as a structure for the book series. The books offer a variety of good practice, ranging from analytical instruments and strategic models to realised pilot-projects, innovative technologies, and locally implemented processes.

In focus of this volume are five emerging megacities and mega-urban regions across the globe. Located in different climatic areas, determined by different economic develop-ment conditions and political frameworks each city has to address different local challenges. Based on various case studies and pilot proj-

ects, the book shows the early conceptualiza-tion and the further organization of integrative spatial planning and urban design for sustain-able and more energy-efficient urban struc-tures and the adaptation of cities to climate change.

In addition to senior scientists, who have sum-marized their main results in the five volumes of the Future Megacities Book Series, ambi-tious young researchers have also contributed substantially to the German research program on sustainable development of future mega-cities. The authors included in this volume were awarded the research program‘s Young Researcher‘s Award in 2013, and a small but

exemplary selection of their scientific work is presented here. Main topics are mobility with transit-oriented development and public trans-port in China, water demand and supply issues in the arid cities of Lima and Urumqi, gover-nance questions in South Africa and India in the wide framework of energy, and improve-ment of urban planning procedures in Ho Chi Minh City.

Transportable, robust, quick to assemble and dismantle, easy to repair and recycle, and us-able in different climatic regions—this is what was required of the pavilions that Markus Heinsdorff designed for the presentation of Germany in India 2011–2013 (steel and mem-brane) and the presentation of Germany in China 2007–2010 (bamboo and membrane). The textile buildings were used as mobile exhi-bition, conference, concert, and event venues and toured through a total of ten megacities. As building objects, they also represented the “construction and urbanization themes” of the events.

The highly innovative structures of the pavil-ions, which were mostly developed in cooper-ation with the structural consulting engineers schlaich bergermann und partner, and the nov-el textile materials, as well as their exceptional esthetic qualities, make the multifunctional light buildings pioneering prototypes of a new generation of textile building. Using photographs and plans, Mobile spaces presents the various types of pavilion, as well as further experiments with universities and engineers on the subject of “environmental membranes” and statics in extreme light-weight construction.

As part of the project Urbane Künste Ruhr (Ruhr Urban Arts), four teams at the Zurich Uni-versity of the Arts (ZHdK) conducted a lab in Mülheim, Germany in 2013. Using artistic and cultural sciences methods, various layers of the town on the Ruhr were exposed, studied, and made visible and audible. The dance initia-tives of local youths with an African migration background, as well as the discourses about creative city and creative class, play a role in the illumination of the problems and also the potential of the town of Mülheim. Apart from visual and performative approaches, the town

was also listened to intently. Acoustic atmo-spheres, as well as visitors to the centrally lo-cated Forum shopping center, provide insights into the changes and difficulties experienced by the town and its inhabitants. The presentations of the four projects are sup-plemented by contributions by various guest authors, who provide insights into the political and urban development situation of the Ruhr area, as well as into related questions about the role of the arts in urban transformation pro-cesses. The publication is accompanied by a website with acoustic and filmic material.

Artistic production and the spaces available for this within the urban fabric have always played a valuable role in urbanization processes. Art City lab takes Berlin as an example of such developments. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, artists had great opportunities to occupy and appropriate empty lots and houses, whereas nowadays they are increasingly pushed out of the city.

Art City lab examines and documents alterna-tive architectural and organizational approach-es to the creation of affordable studio space, by analyzing a variety of prefabricated build-ing systems and how they can be combined, adapted, and condensed into new studio pro-totypes.

Savamala, a district of Belgrade that is rich in tradition but has been neglected since the nineteen-fifties, has recently been experienc-ing a rapid transformation. Owing to its loca-tion near the center, on the banks of the Sava, it has become attractive not only for those in-volved in the Belgrade creative industries and gastronomy, but also for global investors, as shown by the recently published, controversial project Belgrade Waterfront. The studies by Bureau Savamala in 2013 and 2014 show the changes within Savamala both from a material and socio-economic perspec-

tive and from the point of view of its inhab-itants and visitors. Based on the results, the possibilities and scope of a gradual and gentle upgrade are discussed. Local architects and creative artists also present their projects that are designed—in some cases together with the inhabitants—to contribute to the renewal of Savamala even without gentrification. These insights into the transformation of Sa-vamala’s neighborhoods are complemented by contributions about the historic development and specific urban development situation of Belgrade.

Landscapes are constantly changing. We per-ceive them, talk about them, use them, and thereby contribute to changing them. How can one shape this change? To understand a landscape, to enjoy it, to put down roots, to question it, to shape it, one must explore it. Preferably on foot, because walking can be a creative process, in which novelty comes about through the interplay of discovery, flow, and

reflection. Everyday life, science, practice, and art offer a wealth of experience in this respect. How can walking help all those who would like to set out to shape their landscapes? Henrik Schultz explains the background to this, pres-ents examples, and designs and tests a “walk-ing method” that can be applied by planners, citizens, and scientists. Landscape is a social task, which we approach by walking.

From historic gardens and private gardens to parkland, botanical gardens and roadside greenery: the structuring presence of greenery in the city is playing an ever greater role in plan-ning practice today. Areas of greenery within urban space are not only very important eco-logically and socially. Green spatial elements also play an important role in master planning on a municipal and regional level and are sub-ject to participatory processes. This book examines new approaches to the planning of greenery in various European coun-

tries (Germany, England, Finland, France, and the Netherlands). Ten selected cases highlight various geographical aspects in each of the national contexts and show the influences on spatial, ecological, economic, and socio-politi-cal transformations. The aim of this publication is to observe inno-vative processes in nature and housing and to present insights that can be applied to new ap-proaches to planning.

When seeking new approaches to architectural design, we come across spatial phenomena even outside of architecture that illuminate fun-damental architectural issues. Exploring this further leads to areas as various as fashion, film, music, dance, sculpture, or scenography. The relationship between the internal and ex-ternal that is characteristic of receptacles, the double-sided and multilayered properties of clothing, or the diffuse nature of acoustic spac-es reveal a spatial potential that can change the perspective on architectural space. The same

applies to the creation of space through dance or scenographic acts, as well as the particular time and space structure of film. Concrete ex-periments with regard to each of the named phenomena are the starting point for further explanations and insights by an interdisciplin-ary circle of experts. This has resulted in sur-prising perspectives for architectural design. Reflexive Design presents an integrative ap-proach, both in theory and in practice, to the emergence and interpretation of design and research in architecture. The formative role of research-based design strategies, with re-gard to architectural developments from mo-dernity to the present day, has not yet been fully recognized. At the same time, in recent years increasing importance has been accord-ed to discourses about design theory. At the interface of these two contexts, the contribu-

tions in the book portray the wide spectrum of creative and cultural aspects of reflexivity and reflexive design processes, as well as the potential opened up by different methods of creation and by the unexpected connections between theoretical knowledge and proj-ect ideas in architecture. this is Modern!German Werkbund Exhibition Venice 2014

Claudia Kromrei (ed.)

english

With the catalog this is modern, the German Werkbund Berlin presents the status of con-temporary architecture in Germany: 22 re-nowned architecture firms show their designs for a German exhibition pavilion on the Bien-nale site in the Giardini in Venice. The existing pavilion, built in 1909 and modified in 1938, was hypothetically stated as needing renewal, reopening the question of a contemporary na-tional exhibition building for the whole world to see. The fact that the Werkbund is questioning its status specifically in the year 2014 and in the

context of this year’s Architecture Biennale—which is concerned with the fundamentals of architecture and with 100 years of Absorbing Modernity—is of course linked to the emblem-atic event of the Werkbund exhibition of 1914 in Cologne. 100 years after this first large-scale exhibition, the German Werkbund Berlin also addresses the question of what insights have been gained by the experience of 100 years of modernity, in the search for an appropriate ap-proach to architectural creation.

Architektur Ausstellen Zur mobilen Anordnung des Immobilen

Carsten Ruhl / Chris Dähne (eds.)

german

The medium of an “exhibition” is generally regarded as a natural presentation form for architecture. A look back at the history of ar-chitecture exhibitions reveals a development which culminates in the practice of the exhi-bition itself being understood as a spatial art, which stands with equal value next to the ar-chitect’s building. Therefore an architecture ex-hibition no longer merely serves the purpose of documenting existing or future buildings, but has become an art form in itself, which has scarcely been taken into consideration up until

now in research about the architecture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The volume Architektur ausstellen – Zur mo-bilen Anordnung des Immobilen is dedicated on the one hand to the history and theory of the exhibition of architecture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and on the other hand to the practice of architecture, art history, media and cultural sciences, in order to reflect on esthetic strategies, media aspects, and ar-chitectural practices on a general level.

What is Germany like, how long, how big, and how diverse?Olaf Wegewitz, an artist, natural philosopher, and poet, set out in the summer of 2009 to pursue answers to these questions. His route took him 1340 kilometers along the 11th line of longitude, from Fehmarn by the Baltic Sea to the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. Olaf Wegewitz surveyed the country physi-cally and artistically, along with its flora and fauna, and then captured his impressions in a 100-meter-long painting. The book shows the complete sequence of this fascinating painting, presenting coasts,

lakes and rivers, meadows, forests and moun-tains, fields and villages along the way. Using delicate, gestural, expressive, dramatic, and concentrated strokes of the brush, Olaf Wege-witz paints a picture of Germany as we have never seen it before, with a close-up view of its landscape and nature, and what this may mean for our future. Apart from presenting the whole painting, the book contains a number of sketches, frottages made on walks, poetic texts, and an interview with the artist.

PUZZLE. How a collection is exhibited or how a building curates a collection—this was the title of an experiment carried out by the Mu-seum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig between June 2010 and March 2011, with regard to the exhibition of a collection. 10 groups, totaling 48 people between the ages of 5 and 75, were invited to curate a total of 34 exhibitions in ten different spaces, or to realize installations. The aim of the project was to “present art as a curatorial practice,” focusing on the experi-

ence of a wide range of perceptions and inter-ests pertaining to a collection of contemporary art. The versatile architecture of the new gal-lery building played a particular role in how the ideas were put into practice. The book accompanying the project is more than just a documentation: with its clear de-sign and striking typography, it seeks to convey this method of curating in book form, as an in-spiration to others.

What is the role of travel in art? The need for distance, new places, and experiences? What is the relationship between visitor and host? What is remote in the age of globalization? These were only some of the questions ex-plored by eight curators from Europe and the Americas during the train travelling sympo-sium fernweh across rural Scotland. During their journeys they visited villages, towns, and art venues around the country to investigate

the relationship between place, hospitality, collaboration, distance, and the urban-rural, as well as other matters.“At the core of fernweh is a longing for an un-defined, perhaps transcendent freedom, but one that may lead to critical reflection, both on oneself and also on one’s surroundings that will also return to the question of community.” (Simon Ward)

still. the east end Photographs is a collection of images about the landscape of Long Island, New York. Reflective and transcendent, these images evoke the quality of our natural world defined by light and the contours of nature. Cheng has photographed the environment us-ing a shift of the focus plane within the camera to detail in a non-distinct yet decidedly emo-tional way, to evoke a poetic interpretation of the landscape that is constantly deriving its beauty and power from the color palate and

a sense of movement that defines the land-scape of Long Island and which has inspired so many artists. In changing the focal plane he was able to redefine what he was seeing, in a sense, to un/define the reality and to present images, in a way that is open. That the clarity and truth is the viewers vision, and that he the image maker, is the portal into that vision.Text by Elisabeth Biondi, Edwina von Gal, Jack Larsen, E.E. Cummings, and Terrie Sultan

Though without even knowing it, almost ev-eryone has sat on a chair by Gerd Lange or picked up one of his products at some time or other. The furniture and product designer has created countless everyday objects, and the production runs of his chairs have been spectacularly large. In short, Gerd Lange tre-mendously influenced the history of design in Germany in the 1970s and 80s.After learning the carpenter trade, Lange stud-ied at Offenbach University of Art and Design and, in 1961, opened his own design studio in Kapsweyer, a hamlet in southwestern Ger-many. Just seven years later, in 1968, he de-signed a stacking chair made of a polyamide seat and tubular steel legs. More than a mil-

lion units were produced over the course of forty-five years. The plain, functional chair with the succinct name “SM 400 K” received Ger-many’s Federal Prize for Occupational Seat-ing, the U.S. Design Award, and the iF Design Award at the Messe Hannover. It can now be viewed at the Guggenheim Museum and at Rockefeller Center in New York. In 1973 Lange created the first plastic chair with wooden legs, manufactured by Thonet. The designer and author Alfred Hablützel, a profound authority of Gerd Lange’s work, has written the first study of “Gerd Lange Design”. Richly illustrated and with insightful commen-tary, Hablützel’s book introduces readers to Lange’s most important designs.
