BELGIUM 927 Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal (RVi) will cease to existafter 31 December 2011. That also means also that the Wolvertemtransmitter (near Brussels) operating on 927 kHz will be switched off on31 December at 23:59:59 hours local time. Norkring is the owner of thetransmitter. It is unclear if they will put airtime on the market forrent. Mails to them are left unanswered. But I think the transmitter is inbad shape. It is left on the air at night with unmodulated carrier sinceseveral weeks ago. We have seen this too during extremely cold periods inrecent winters. So I think there are no plans to use the site for otherpurposes.(Guido Schotmans-BEL, RNW MN via WDXC-UK Contact)

VRT has also published a statement about the closure of mediumwave 927kHz. It says the closure follows the European trend whereby more and moremediumwave stations are being closed. It says 1.7 million kW hoursannually (equivalent to 745 tons of CO2) will be saved. According to VRT,relatively few people listened on mediumwave.(RNW MN via WDXC-UK Contact)

a small photo image is visible on the left side:

BELGIUM 927 is empty here now. That's nothing new at night, but thistime the Wolvertem transmitter will not come back. As a replacement areVRT's Radio 1 and Radio 2 available free to air on Astra 1L since Dec 29.For that all VRT had to do was lifting the encryption of the existingfeeds in the 12.722 GHz mux where until now everything was scrambled. Theshabby 64 kbps mono feeds that so far constituted a separate RadioVlaanderen Internationaal (which went away from shortwave already in 2009after the foreign language services disappeared even earlier, in 2005)will presumably soon be terminated if that has not already happened.

    If not seen yet:

The old Brown Boveri transmitter was until now in use on 927 kHz . The twoother ones were until 2008, when this frequency has been shut down, responsible for the 1512 kHz outlet; the Telefunken S 4006 type at nightwith 300 kW for RVI and RNW programming, the Nautel during daytime with25kW as Brussels city service, for some time including two hours ofDeutsche Welle in German a day.(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Jan 2)

BHUTAN No operations 28th full day and 29th (morning so far) 5030 /6035.043.(Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, DXplorer Dec 29)

As mentioned in dswci DX-Window #443, the AIR engineer is now repairingboth the new 100 kW transmitter on 5030.00 kHz (this frequency was used byBhutan until Sep 2000), but also the 50 kW transmitter on 6035.05 kHz. Heis also training local technicians. The tests have been sporadic as seenbelow, but at times with impressive signals.

Bhutan Broadcasting Service expects that, when the 5030 transmitter isready for regular service in January with a second program, they may putit on a goodclean frequency. Sarawak has not been heard here since June 2011.(Anker Petersen-DEN, dswci DXW Dec 28)

5990 Radio Senado, terrific reception this week, very early, notedseveral mornings blowing in with a big signal on nice clear fqy. Dec 29 at0755 with Port pop song, f/by taped ID extravaganza at 0801 UT, withchimes, OM in echo, mentions of fqys and ondas curtas, "Bom Dia!" andanother ID as "Radio Senado, a musica regional de. . ." Then into a pgm ofranchera-like musical selections. Also pinning the S-meter needleat 0959 UT on Dec 30.

4865.03 Radio Verdes Florestas, Cruz do Sul, signal holding up quite latemost mornings, from approx 1000 s/on to nearly 1100 UT, and at times, surprisingly, the best Latin in the 60 mb here. Hrd Dec 29 w/seguedballads, no amnts at all until 1055 UT when into an ID sequence live OMwith clear "Radio Verdes Florestas!" ID and then YL with canned ID andfqys run-down. UNID LA - 4875.46, mountain of garbage on this fqy in the mornings thisweek, but underneath it all seems an LA broadcaster, with badly distortedmodulation and potentially spurious. 5954.2 Dec 24 at 2356 UT I an hearing a tell-tale het between this weaksignal and something weaker on 5955 kHz, hinting that the ELCORtransmitter in Costa Rica is back. Yes! At 2357 UT I can barely make outthe R. Republica theme before it cuts off at 2357:40* UT. Then there isstill a het, now between 5952+ kHz, no doubt Bolivia, and whatever is on5955 kHz (Iran in Chinese? CNR in Mongolian?).

Maybe Republica has been there all along but on a much reduced schedule. Why should they keep running this pipsqueak anyway on a Saturday nightwhen they are about to come up on a big Sackville transmitter? Anyhow, there was NO Cuban jamming on 5955 kHz, and when I listen after 0600 UT,5955 kHz has also been blessedly free of the radio war allowing RNW to beclear.

9490 kHz from 2358 UT I am awaiting R. Republica via RMI via Sackville, which finally cuts on air a few sex before 0000 UT Dec 25, plays shortinstrumental version of Cuban NA (much like that heard on RHC), then theR. Republica theme and sign-on but not mentioning any times orfrequencies. 0001 UT starts 'Recuento Semanal' week-in-review program.Noise jamming has started, but still an hour later, RR/SAC is well atop ithere; scheduled 00-03 UT Sundays and Mondays only.(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Dec 29)

    CUBA I attach a copy of the post which I sent out on MW Masts.The coordinates for the Chambas towers are around22 22 27 N 78 53 36 W.For Marti the coordinates are 23 00 06 N 80 54 51 W

I wrote the following"On my last post I discussed the growth of data about Cuba.

Perhaps I am being over observant but I cannot help wondering about astrange by-product of the new coordinates found for the 200 kW sites inthat country.

Looking at the areas North of both Chambas and Marti I notice that thereare two lines of six towers neatly arrayed pointing Northwards USA. Isthis a mini Zarya?

Do the MW signals come from the Dipoles / Radiators and are these towersused for Dentro-Cuban jamming of shortwave Radio Marti? Are the towersused for the MW signals? If so what are the masts used for?

I open this for a discussion point to help take your minds off any holidayblues!"

I wonder whether the SW community have thoughts on this discovery of mine.(Dan Goldfarb-UK, SW TX site Dec 22)

Not a Zarya, I think. Too short.

It appears to me that the six tower arrays are parasitic, made up of

  • file:///Z|/DOKUMENTATION-BULLETINS/WWDXD-BCDX/2012/BCDX1047.TXT[01.01.2013 18:17:16]

(starting at the south end) one reflector (about 5% longer), one drivenelement and 4 directors (about 10-15% shorter).

The two arrays are about 2400' apart. The westerly array uses shortertowers and closer spacing (total length about 1010'). The easterly arrayis about 1450' long. Both arrays are aimed at 350 degr. The easterly feedline is puzzling though, it extends far past the line of the towers, perhaps a matching stub ???? The westerly feed line is less clear but itmay be similar.

South of the six tower arrays are two 2 tower phased arrays, arranged in a0 degr / 180 degr line.(Jerry Lenamon-USA, SW TXsite Dec 23)

Re: Cuba. My thoughts are identical to Jerry's on all counts.X-mas Cheers. Ian(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TX site Dec 23)

1040 kHz Radio Lincoln from Cuba to USA & Canada.Hi Ian. Kudos on your fine work! I'm sure you're aware that Radio Martiwas named after a Cuban hero from the late 1800's Jose Marti. PissedCastro off so much he not only jammed/jams the hell out of it but alsostarted a short-duration operation called 'Radio Lincoln' to mock the U.S.on 1040 kHz MANY years ago.

I find it interesting that a couple of 6-element arrays are pointingeither due North or due South [almost certainly the former considering thesignals Cubans put in here!] from the north coast of Cuba! Kind of hard toclaim you're trying to cover Cuba with that, eh!?(Bill Whitacre, IBB, DC, SW TXsite via dxld Dec 29)

But they still shy away from using these facilities for Radio Habana Cuba.Seems they feel themselves that in this case it would be too silly to cryfor the ITU because of 1180 kHz (and, if I understand it right, RadioMarti on shortwave as well). However, I understand that in the old daysRadio Moscow in English was transmitted from Cuba on mediumwave, right?(Kai Ludwig, ibid.) Right

GREAT WORK, Dan. See my screenshots as attached.

I assume these two combined installations, both jamming and foreignbroadcast sites towards north via Florida to Chicago main lobe line, areR E L I C T S of the CUBAN-RUSSIAN radio equipment cooperation teamworkin 1960 til 1992 era.

But station erection never finnished after the collapse of the formerSowjetunion.

And never used before for Radio Moscow foreign service too towards the USAand Canada?

I came never across such a MW direction service, due to lack of free MWchannels in the US. How does work 710 or 1180 kHz channels further northof Florida?

Combined are both MW installations at Chambas and Marti for perfect eastwest Cuban islands jamming sites, on frequencies 710 and 1180 kHz ?

As well as directional installation in direction of 340 / 350 degr towardsFlorida and further north to Chicago IL...

    About the stub

    I asked some radioamateur, mostly these stubs are used at one quarterwavelength. {also LW Oranienburg Zehlendorf 177 kHz has one or more stubs}

Comment of look at these on Google Earth:" ... and it appears the feedline only goes to the driven tower, thepenultimate southerly one.

And these are pretty obviously classic "sideways Yagi" antennas, andcertainly not mini-sunrise (Zarya) antennas. The shortest Zarya I haveever seen is 1.5 km long, and the Zayra antennas are all fed, since it isa traveling wave antenna.

The "sideways Yagi" design was sold to various of clients, mostly in theMiddle East. Examples were built by Marconi and by ContinentalElectronics, both responding to RFP's from broadcasters requiring thisconfiguration. They are a very bad design.

I would go so far as to say an incompetent design. They have extremelypoor bandwidth, and although they have reasonable main lobe gain, theyhave significant sidelobes. And, of course, they are very frequencyspecific.

One can do a much better job with simpler systems - equivalent forwardgain, lower sidelobes, much better bandwidth.

From the dimensions I would guess that one is on 1180 (R. Marti frequency)and the other on 710 (R. Mambi frequency), since those are both majorCubano jamming targets.

And yes, the two tower arrays would seem to be good jamming system designs..."

More jamming sites on the island ?

Jamming masts are 220 kilometers apart between Marti and Chambas, so Iwonder, whether are two more smaller jamming sites erected on the western(390 kms distance) and eastern tip (550 kms distance) area ?

GERMANY 50 Jahre Deutschlandfunk - Quiz Question 50 years DLF.

Dez. 1964 in Betrieb.

INDIA Many stations of AIR will be operating on SW & MW with extendedspecial broadcasts today 31 Dec 2011 past 1830 UTC (Midnight Indian Time)to usher in the new year.

On SW, the following stations were heard last year.

    4775 Imphal4800 Hyderabad4810 Bhopal4835 Gangtok4940 Guwahati4950 Srinagar4965 Shimla5010 Trivandrum

So look out for these stations this year also.73 Jose Jacob, VU2JOS (DXindia Dec 31)

An at 1730 UT heard these regionals from India:

SOUTH AFRICA [to Zimbabwe] 4880 SW R Africa, via Meyerton, at1718-1720 UT on Dec 19, English talks, 33343.(Bernard Mille, Bailleul-F; dswci DXW Dec 28)

This London based SW Radio Africa on Dec 19 celebrated a major milestonein reaching 10 years of independent broadcasting into Zimbabwe viashortwave and the internet to the rest of the world. A statement issued bystation manager Gerry Jackson said they started broadcasting Wed Dec 19,2001 and "had no idea that 10 years on we would still be here - or thatthe crisis in Zimbabwe would still be dragging on, with no solution insight."

Jackson thanked the stations listeners saying "You have made this radiostation possible. It has been your willingness to tell us your storiesthat has helped to create such compelling radio. This is your story wehave been telling for the past decade. Your tragedies, your hopes anddreams." Jackson said they have learnt that "our listeners are wise andwell informed. Now if we could only persuade the politicians to listen tothe people - everything would come right in Zimbabwe."

The former ZBC Radio 3 DJ said "we have to be the only radio station inthe world that hopes, it is not in existence in another 10 years - becausethat would mean the Zim crisis continues. But more than anything we wouldlike to know that we could return to Zimbabwe and broadcast on FM."

SW Radio Africa's daily broadcasts on shortwave have given Mugabe's regimemany sleepless nights. With the help of Chinese jamming equipment, theregime has resorted to jamming broadcasts from the station at regularintervals, particularly towards election time and other significantevents. After Mugabe lost elections in 2008 and employed violence to stayin power, ZANU PF insisted during subsequent power sharing negotiationsthat the station and others broadcasting from outside the country had tobe shut down. Party members have also on many occasions refused to grantthe station interviews.

In March 2007 then Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga admittedthey were jamming SW Radio Africa broadcasts. Speaking in parliamentMatonga boasted that the government was generating electronic interferenceto prevent reception of the broadcasts. "We cannot allow foreigners toinvade our airwaves without our authority. We will continue to do it. Weneed to protect our sovereignty. If you go to England you will not receiveany foreign radio station."

SW Radio Africa is run by exiled Zimbabweans who, because of repressivemedia legislation, were not allowed to broadcast from home. In 2000 thestation, then called Capital Radio, challenged government's broadcastingmonopoly and won its case in the Supreme Court. But after just 6 days ofbroadcasting from a local hotel the station was shut down by Mugabe usinghis presidential powers.
