positive than the BH groups and does not nor-
mally react under these conditions.
The weakly acidic CH, group can be
deprotonated by strong nucleophiles such as LiBu
or RMgX; the resulting metalated carboranes
LiCCHBloHlo and ( L ~ C ) ~ B ~ O H I O can then be
used to prepare a full range of C-substituted
derivatives -R, -X, -SiMe3, -COOH, -COCI,
-CONHR, etc. The possibility of synthesizing
extensive covalent C-C or siloxane networks
with pendant carborane clusters is obvious and
the excellent thermal stability of such polymers
has already been exploited in several industrial
applications.
Although doso-carboranes are stable to high
temperatures and to most common reagents,
M. F. Hawthorne showed (1964) that they can
be specifically degraded to nido-carborane anions
by the reaction of strong bases in the presence of protonic solvents, e.g.:
Figure 6.20 indicates that, in both cases, the
BH vertex removed is the one adjacent to
the two CH vertices: since the C atoms tend
to remove electronic charge preferentially from contiguous B atoms, the reaction can be described
as a nucleophilic attack by EtO- on the most
positive (most electron deficient) B atom in the

sidered as a coordination complex between the pentahapto 6-electron donor C2BgH1 1,- and the
acceptor BH2+ (which has 3 vacant orbitals). The closo-structure can be regained by capping the open pentagonal face with an equivalent metal acceptor that has 3 vacant orbitals.

ment is that of the polycyclic organophosphanes. Since an
unexpected variety of polycyclic phosphorus hydrides
P,,H, (m < n) had been detected earlier by mass spectrom-
etry in the hydrolysis products of calcium phosphide and
in the thermolyzates of d i p h ~ s p h a n e [ ’ . ~ . ~ ’ ] (Table l), partic-
ular interest has been placed on the structural elucidation
of these compounds. As a result of their pronounced ten-
dency to undergo disproportionation as well as their in-
solubility and lacking tendency to crystallize, polycyclic
phosphorus hydrides are, in general, not amenable to nu-
clear magnetic resonance spectroscopic or X-ray structural
investigations. Thus, a strategy involving the synthesis and
structural elucidation of the corresponding derivatives is
followed in which substitution of hydrogen atoms by alkyl
groups is utilized to obtain structural information about
the parent compounds.[’] Organophosphanes P,R, of this
type generally have a higher kinetic stability toward dis-
proportionation. reactions and are considerably simpler to
isolate on a preparative scale than the corresponding phos-
phorus hydrides. Since the initial preparation of a series of
organopolycyclophosphanes (Table 3) and the elucidation
Table 3. Polycyclic organophosphanes with six to nine phosphorus atoms
(structures of the phosphorus skeletons) 111.
of their structures in the course of these investigation^,'^'^
many further representatives of the various classes of com-
pounds with 4-13 phosphorus atoms in the molecule have
been prepared and their structures characterized unequivo-
cally during the last few years. Furthermore, alkyl deriva-
tives of all known phosphorus hydrides (Table 1) have
been detected by mass spectroscopy in the crude reaction
mixtures or in the thermolyzates of phosphorus-poorer or-
ganophosphanes. The organopolycyclophosphane with the
largest phosphorus skeleton so far identified is the com-
pound PZ4iPr4 of as yet unknown structure.
4.1. Synthetic Routes
As can be seen from Section 3.2, some of the polycyclic
organophosphanes are accessible by direct alkylation of
the corresponding polyphosphides. The tricycloheptaphos-
phanes P,Me3[711 and P7iPr3,[721 the octacyclohexadeca-
phosphanes P ~ ~ R z , 38a, b,[461 and the partially organosub-
stituted decacyclohenicosaphosphane PZl HMe,, 43,[”’
have been obtained in this way. However, since polyphos-
phides with isolated P r - ions corresponding to all cova-
lent phosphanes P,R, ( R = H, alkyl, aryl) (see Section 3.2)
by no means exist, this route does not represent a generally
applicable synthetic method.
The P,(m) skeleton of an organopolycyclophosphane,
for which a saltlike starting material of analogous structure
is not available, can sometimes be built up specifically
from a phosphorus-poorer phosphide. Thus, starting from
the tricyclic heptaphosphide 24, the partially organosub-
stituted, tetracyclic nonaphosphide 52 was prepared by cy-

product can be isolated as the black-red, highly viscous
solvent adduct LiP,tBu,. 3 m ~ n o g l y m e . ~ ~ ” ~ ~ ] On reaction
with protonating agents, 52 is converted into the partially
substituted phosphorus hydride 53 ; with alkyl halides, the
mixed alkylated nonaphosphanes(3) 54a-c are formed.
According to their 3’P-NMR spectra, 53 and 54 are each
present as mixtures of two configurational isomers, which
differ in the spatial arrangements of the substituents at P5
(see Section 4.4).
In some cases, heferopolycyclophosphanes in which the
number of phosphorus atoms in the ring skeleton is equal
to or larger than the number of heteroatoms can also be
built up specifically by suitable reactions. Thus, 1,2-ethy-
lenebisphosphane 55 reacts with dichloro(methy1)phos-
phane to give the bicyclic, disecondary phosphane 56,[751
which, on treatment with RPCl,, furnishes heterotricyclo-
phosphanes of the type 57.1761

Next to the five-membered ring units, three-membered
ring units play a larger role than was initially assumed.
This is now understandable since the strain energy of the
P3 ring as opposed to the nonstrained Ps ring has been re-
cently found to be 7.8 kcal/mol.[’081 When this value is
compared with uon S ~ h l e y e r ’ s ” ~ ~ ~ estimated value of 26.8
kcal/mol for the ring strain in cyclopropane compared
with cyclohexane, it becomes clear that the deformations
of the bonding angles at trivalent phosphorus result in
considerably lower strain energies than d o deformations of
those at carbon. Accordingly, P3 rings often occur as par-
a
tial structures in polyphosphides and organopolycyclo-
phosphanes.
On the other hand, according to Ah/richs,l””J the fact
that no sterically unperturbed P,(m) skeletons with four-
membered ring partial structures exist is attributable to the
general skeletal destabilization caused by parallel G bonds
at a separation corresponding to a single-bond distance.
The first example in which a molecular polycyclic phos-
phane is forced to adopt an annelated four-membered ring
as a structural element as the result of special steric r,ela-
tionships is the compound P,tBu, 61.

siven Signalgruppen der P,H,-Isomere und des P3H, teilweise uberlagert werden ;
D a die NMR-Pam-

in Tab. 1 angegebenen Korrelationen zwischen den einmlnen AABB'C-Spin-
