Migration of salmon and sea trout in the Rhine delta
Some background
Rhine Action Programme / Salmon 2000
research objectives:
What are the migration routes from sea to the spawning sites?
What is the efficiency of fish passes in the Netherlands?
Which factors influence the migration of salmonids?

Salmon stocking
1850-1870: 10 million juvenile salmon stocked in Germany;
1871-1912: 160 million juvenile salmon stocked in Germany and Switzerland;
1872-1897: 13,5 million parrs and 300.000 smolts stocked in the Netherlands;
1879: first tagging experiments with salmon;
12.000 tagged smolts released, 1 returnee on 332 smolts stocked.

Evaluation of the fish pass near Sambeek on the Meuse
Research goals:
To find out what the efficiency of the fish pass is for salmonids;
The extend of use of the shipping locks for migration of salmonids.
During three years of research 96 salmonids (11 salmon, 84 sea trout and 1 rainbow trout) were caught downstream of Lith (most downstream barrier on the river Meuse) and tagged with NEDAP transponders.

A: fish that, after release, directly migrated through the fish pass (49);
B: fish outside research area (4) and fish that first migrated downstream (5);
C: fish outside research area that could not pass the weir at Grave (3);
D: fish that migrated downstream after being released (27);
E: fish outside research area that migrated downstream (22);
F: fish that were not detected after release (11).

Results:
Starting with 96 fish at release point 3:
11 fish were never detected downstream or upstream (tagging or fisheries mortality?);
27 fish only detected on station 1: migrated downstream (not motivated?);
58 fish migrated upstream and were detected on station 4: all passed successfully!

Evaluation of the fish pass near Sambeek on the Meuse
Some other conclusions:
Of the 58 fish that passed successfully, 5 fish were not detected in the fish pass. It was assumed that these fish passed via the shipping locks;
Within 25 hours 2/3 of the fish detected downstream finds the entrance of the fish pass;
Within the next 24 hours almost all fish succeed in reaching the detection station upstream of Sambeek;
There is no relationship between successful passage and factors like time, discharge, flow velocity, temperature, weight and length of the fish;
Overall migration speed (in days) is positively correlated with condition index of the fish;
Migration delay at Sambeek is several hours up to 2 days. We conclude that this is not problematic.
