Foreword
Quizzes are enjoying great popularity, for decades now. It is a pleasure to test your knowledge in jolly fellowship, whether you play alone or in a team against other players.
Most important is to have fun. Good entertainment is the key to success.
To set up a good quiz, some tips and pointers – compiled for you in this book – should be followed.
History
For over ten years, IRELAND’S OWN, Irish pub in Sindelfingen, has been running a quiz night every two weeks. Of course, there were other pubs having quiz nights long before, but in the meantime IRELAND’S OWN is the only place in town performing a pub quiz.
Over twenty teams compete in each quiz and for the Championship of the Year. The highlight is our Christmas quiz. That evening, the Champions of the year are announced and all competitors get a present to take home.

1. Before You Begin
Four Steps for a Successful Quiz
1.2.3 Fugacity of a QuestionHow does a simple question become a difficult question?
A question can become obsolete. What was in yesterday’s news paper no one will know by tomorrow. A few weeks after a political election, you might ask for the Secretary of State, but a few years later no one will know that.
1.2.4 Level of DifficultyWhy shouldn’t a quiz be too difficult in general?
If more than half of the participants know little or nothing, they don’t feel good and get bored. A quiz for specialists creates lone champions.
1.2.5 The Proper MixThe composition is essential
A mixture of questions from very different areas of knowledge is creating an increasing possibility, that someone knows something, that others don’t. That makes for entertainment and lets the losers not looking stupid on an evening, when the right questions didn’t come up.
