Erin Parker underwent a double mastectomy after a scare with breast cancer, but the Riddells Creek mother of two considers herself smart rather than brave.
It was the only thing to do, she says. Id do it again a million times over.
Ms Parker made the decision to have both breasts removed in 2013 after discovering a lump. She had already lost her mother Rhonda to the disease and had been identified as a carrier of the BRCA2 gene, putting her in a heightened risk category.
A close friend was also diagnosed with advanced breast cancer.
Ms Parkers second child was eight weeks old when she found a lump in her breast. They couldnt say it wasnt cancer, so the next morning I was in to see the specialist, she says.
An anxious 36-hour wait for the results of a biopsy strengthened her and her husband Geoffs resolve.
We were like, this is it. Whichever way it goes, I am having the surgery.
Following the surgery and reconstruction, the personal trainer and wellness coach has just a 5 per cent chance of cancer returning.
I just feel so lucky that Ive had this opportunity to find out and be in the position to do something about it, when my mum and many others didnt have that chance.
Ms Parker is training for the Weekend to End Womens Cancer. The event, from February 28 to March 1 next year, raises money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
She will walk 60 kilometres over the two days. Her team raised more than $60,000 last year and is aiming to collect $100,000 in 2015.
For more details of Ms Parkers team, visit the facebook page goo.gl/mCu87j.

Women from across the Macedon Ranges are being encouraged to make an appointment for a mammogram at a mobile breast screening service at Kyneton hospital.
Medics in one of BreastScreen Victorias bright pink vans began providing the service outside the hospital on December 4. It will be available until February 25.
The van is fitted with the latest digital breast cancer screening technology, which allows images to be captured and quickly sent to radiologists over a broadband network.
BreastScreen Victoria chief executive Vicki Pridmore said it was incredibly important that women aged 50-74 have their breasts checked once every two years. The bottom line is that we know thats the best way to catch it and catch it early, she said.
Ms Pridmore said the free service was staffed by women who strived to make users feel comfortable. About 300 appointments are available in Kyneton in January and up to 500 inFebruary.
Ms Pridmore said cancers detected by BreastScreen Victoria were typically caught when they were much smaller.
And the smaller the cancer, the more options there are for treatment.
BreastScreen Victoria diagnosed 1435 cancers throughout the state in 2012-13.
For more details about the service or to make an appointment, visit www.breastscreen.org.au.

Residents of Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are being urged to make sure they dont make themselves an easy target for thieves this Christmas.
Hume crime prevention officer Senior Constable Jacqui Newman said police expected another bump in the number of burglaries and thefts from, and of, motor vehicles this holiday season.
But she said people could reduce the risk by taking simple precautions, like making their house looked lived in and always locking their car.
We certainly see a huge increase in thefts across the board, Senior Constable Newman said.
People need to ensure they take care of the basics, like locking screen doors and making it look like someone is home.
She said police were amazed at the number of people who left themselves open to thieves.
Its certainly surprising how many people, in this day and age dont lock their doors and windows before going away.
Senior Constable Newman said a recent police operation across Hume turned up dozens of unlocked vehicles in carparks.
For us, thats just really frustrating, as most thieves are just opportunistic.
She said people should also avoid leaving Christmas presents and other valuables in view when parking their car.
Victoria Police provided tips on how to avoid burglaries, including:
Leaving a radio on and tuning it to a talkback station. Using a timer on lamps to make it look like someone is inside. Having a trusted neighbour or relative empty your letterbox and take your bin out and in, even if its empty. Hanging some old clothes on the line and leaving old shoes outside the front door. If going away for an extended period of time, getting a house-sitter and arranging for someone to mow your lawn. Trying not to leave invitations or notes about holidays in plain view such as on the fridge, next to the phone or on a whiteboard.

Its all about space at this well-designed property, with a block of about 5058 square metres and an interior with big rooms all beautifully presented. Four bedrooms (and a study) include the main with walk-in robe and en suite with a spa, dual basins in a stone-topped timber vanity unit, and enclosed toilet. The lounge room links with a separate dining room and the huge tiled family-meals area has a wood heater. The kitchen has timber cabinetry, stainless-steel cooking appliances, dishwasher and stone benchtops. The outdoor entertainment set-up includes a north-facing front verandah which couples with a rear pergola; this looks out to a massive backyard with sweeping lawn and landscaped gardens. Other features are a heat transfer system, wiring for sound, solar hot water, two sheds, water tanks and an integrated double garage.

Right in the thick of things, this good-sized townhouse has location sewn up for those wanting to literally step out their door for shopping, restaurants and services. The interior has the look of 30-plus years ago which, with exposed brick walls and ceiling beams, pine accents and a funky breakfast bar, could be made into a trendy little pad. The two bedrooms are upstairs, each with built-in robes; one has access to a balcony and they share a bathroom and toilet (theres another toilet downstairs). A carpeted sitting room has a wall of windows and opens to a courtyard patio with concrete and garden beds. The adjoining kitchen-meals zone is tiled and a wall oven and gas cooktop equip the kitchen. The garage has internal access. The property is rented by long-term tenants but no lease is in place, so a choice of moving in or keeping the tenants is an open one.

Of the four bedrooms, two have walk-in robes (built-ins for others) including the main which also has a sleek en suite and outdoor access. The main bathroom has dual vanity basins. Gorgeous floorboards anchor living areas which include a lounge room and family-meals area wrapping around a bang-up-to-date kitchen. A huge breakfast/preparation bench, white cabinetry (and loads of it), soft-close drawer and stainless-steel appliances, including dishwasher, equip the space for family cooks. Outdoor entertainment is equally stylish with a gabled pergola sheltering a built-in bar; two more covered decks arranged pavilion-style; screens; and tropical planting which adds a pleasing touch to the backyard. Air-conditioning and a four-car garage are other attractions.

Trying to capture the essence of New Park in limited words is a challenge, such is the magnitude of its specialness. A superb property of about 10.46 hectares, it has a bluestone residence built circa 1860s which has received extraordinary extensions in 1927, then again in 1996-97.
A summer house in the grounds dating back to the 1850s, serving then as accommodation during construction of the family home; a three-room cottage (guest or teen retreat); and outbuildings drenched in history are part of this wonderful spread not to mention a cricket field with spectator pavilion, serviced by kitchen and bathroom. As for the gardens, one word: sublime.
So sympathetically have extensions been
done, its hard to know where original stops and newer begins.
The whole is linked together via a glassed-in loggia, originally an open verandah with flagstones (these remain), and a series of sheltered courtyards which ultimately join up with the original Victorian front verandah, deep and lace-festooned. This clever design ensures maximum indoor/outdoor integration, essential considering the beauty of the gardens.
Of the six bedrooms, four are very large and have fireplaces beneath original ornate mantelpieces. The smaller two, off a side patio, mirror each other: bluestone wall, board-lined, fireplace and hand-hewn wooden closet. Very atmospheric. The main bathroom has the original clawfoot bath
and pedestal basin, and theres another bathroom arrangement in the laundry.
Three very large living rooms are joined by a reading room (fireplace), a library hall, a study, an enclosed vestibule, a mud room and a large linen room each lovely in their own right.
The architect-designed lounge-dining room (1996 addition) has a massive fireplace, cathedral ceiling and french doors to a patio.
The winter room (1927) has strapped walls, ornate cornices and rosette, Tassy oak floorboards and a leadlight transom; and the sitting room adjoining the kitchen has a boarded ceiling and a gas heater under another ornate mantelpiece.
The farmhouse kitchen-diner has

bluestone walls, vaulted timber-lined ceiling with skylight, a 900mm gas cooker, dishwasher and an Andrews cast-iron wood stove under a copper canopy.
Outdoor attractions are endless: water fountains, a nascent picking garden (fenced), a huge chook complex, several large sheds, four pump houses for underground tanks, a hot house, the original shearing shed with historic weighing machine (now a man-cave with wood heater, powder room, and cellar below), a vegie garden, large orchard, two pretty dams (one with jetty), cattleyards, paddocks and did I mention The Gardens? Seriously wow. All of it.

A Child Born
A refugee family fled from persecution.
A young woman expecting a child with her husband
at her side. They travelled far until they reached
Bethlehem where, in a stable, their baby boy was
born.
I like to think that their little boy, though destined to
change the world in so many ways, was able to play
in the streets, to help his mother cook, to watch his
carpenter father at work a normal childhood.
This Christmas let us remember the children, our own
and all the children of the world. Let us remember
that children need love, protection, food and shelter.
Children need to be taught the difference between
right and wrong and to respect the rights of others.
This Christmas take the time to tell the Christmas
Story, encourage your children to think of the elderly
and lonely teach by example.
The Christmas ideal of Peace on Earth, good will
to all seems a distant and impossible dream, but
perhaps if we can teach our children to care for others
that dream may, one day, become reality.
I wish you all a joyous and safe Christmas and a
Happy, Healthy and content New Year.

EAGERTOWRAP UP FOR CHRISTMASBuyers and sellers eager to wrap up property for Christmas. There was a touch more confidence in
Melbournes housing market on Saturday as sellers and buyers strove to bed-down transactions before
Christmas. In the spring market, most buyers are also sellers, and family-home buyers are particularly keen
to settle into a new house before children start school in February. Such lifestyle deadlines exercise a
powerful influence on the timing of transactions. While clearance rates have moderated since October,
many buyers believe that waiting to make purchases until late February, when the market traditionally
sees raised activity and price gains, is inconvenient and risky. On Saturday, the Domain group reported a
clearance rate of 67 per cent from 926 auctions. There were 387 unreported results.Agents said they had
good numbers at open houses and auctions.
Thank youWhorlowsJust a quick note to thank LJ Whorlow First National for their
service. Patrick was fantastic, he listened to my needs and kept
me well informed. He was very approachable, easy going and had
a professional attitude. I would have no hesitation in using your
company in the future.

Dunlop Real Estate strives to ensure that all aspects of real estate probity and regulation are fully
observed. Accordingly, we bring to our readers attention the requirement that as from 1st October 2014
all sellers and real estate agents must make a buyers checklist available to potential buyers of homes
or residential property in Victoria. Consumer Affairs Victoria has published a due diligence checklist
containing a list of authorities and organisations which may restrict what you may or may not do with
a property you are interested in buying. The checklist has details of websites and other contact details
where enquiries may be made. To help you find these websites and links you can check http://www.
consumer.vic.gov.au/duediligencechecklist Before you buy a home, you should be aware of a range of
issues that may affect that property and impose restrictions or obligations on you, if you buy it.
This checklist aims to help you identify whether any of these issues will affect you. The questions are
a starting point only and you may need to seek professional advice to answer some of them. When a
property is put on the market for sale an estate agent or a seller must now:
*ensure that copies of the due diligence checklist are available at any open for inspection and
*include the above webpage link on any website maintained by the agent or the seller. Dunlop Real Estate
has considerable experience in all aspects of real estate and is available to assist you in any enquiry or
interest. Feel free to ring me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 at any time or call into our friendly offices at
Sunbury and Gisborne for a chat.

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery.Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon, Dr Stubbs says.A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me.Seeing my patients bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is denitely the best part of my job.No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.

By Tara Murray
Reigning premier Romsey will be without one of the Riddell District Football Leagues biggest names in 2015 . . . star goalkicker Matthew Davidson is leaving after four years at Romsey Park.
In his first two years at the club, Davidson kicked 129 and 120 goals to lead the leagues goalkicking.
And he finished second in 2013, with 66, and in 2014 with 77.
Davidson was named in the leagues team of the year each season and played in two premierships with the Redbacks, in 2011 and this year.
Redbacks coach Dean Helmers said Davidson would be a big loss for the club.
Im not sure where hes going; I think up Bendigo way, he said.
Hes been awesome for us in the last four years, having kicked a lot of goals and won two premierships.
We wish him the best of luck as he has been of great service for the club. Hes welcome back any time.
