1. Summary COM Express Plug and Receptacle connectors of ept, Tyco and Foxconn were tested for this report. Mechanical intermateability: All combinations of connectors showed similar mating and withdrawal forces. The combinations with ept Receptacle connectors showed the lowest mating force in combination with equal withdrawal forces compared with the other pairs of connectors. 30 mating cycles were performed without damage with all combinations of connectors. Sections of the mating area showed a good mating/fitting of the signal and ground pins between Plug and Receptacle connectors in all combinations. Electrical intermateability: The contact resistance of all combinations was within the same range of values. The high frequency (HF) tests showed a significant better performance of combinations with ept receptacle connector at high data rate than for the other combinations.

3 pairs of COM Express connectors were tested regarding intermateability. The following connectors were tested: a) ept COM Express “Colibri”

2.2. Test facility

The measurements were carried out in the Quality Management Department (QM) at ept GmbH Bergwerkstrasse 50 86971 Peiting, Germany The high frequency (HF) tests were carried out at the Fraunhofer IZM institute in Berlin.

3. Test description and results

3.1. mechanical intermateability

All connectors were assembled to the same type of PCB using reflow technology prior to the tests.

3.1.1. mating and withdrawal forces

3.1.2. mating cycles

The two parts of each specimen pair, the receptacle and the plug, were mated and withdrawn 30 times. These mating cycles were performed with a force displacement testing machine. The first 5 cycles were performed with 25 mm/min for the initial force-displacement charts. For the other 25 cycles the mating and withdrawing speed was set to 600 mm/min. To ensure a proper measuring a fixed/floating bearing was used to position both parts of the connector specimen.

Cross sections of all pairs were done to show how mating looks like inside the mated connectors. The cross sections show the area where Plug and Receptacle are in electrical contact.

The high frequency (HF) tests were done at Fraunhofer IZM institute in Berlin. A complete test report is available (Charakterisierung EPT COM-Express Stecker Colibri_04.07.2012.pdf). This report here shows only extracts of the original Fraunhofer report.
