WHAT MATTERS TO US IS SIZE:
h e Ewald Gruber Winery has remained a family enterprise despite its
size of 70 hectares. h is is in fact possible, because today three of the six
children of Hermine and Ewald Gruber – Ewald jun., Maria and Johann
– are already fully involved in the business. h at the family members
perfectly complement one another is also a benefi t to the wines.
TECHNOLOGY SOMETIMES MATTERS:
h e eldest son, Ewald Gruber, has been cellarmaster for years. He is the one
in charge of winemaking, having perfected his skills during stints at highly
reputed estates throughout the world. It goes without saying that Ewald
Gruber’s winemaking facilities are absolutely state of the art. h ey are top-
notch – and the young winemaker knows exactly how to handle them.
NATURE ALWAYS MATTERS:
It’s no secret that quality comes from the vineyard, from the soil and from the vines, that is from the
“Materia prima“, the grapes. However, it needs skill to bring into the bottle the potential inherent in the
grapes. h e senior, Ewald Gruber, takes care of the vineyards, knowing each one of his vines. h ere is a
growing number of wine lovers who are enthusiastic about the perfect interplay between “outside“ and
“inside”, between vineyard and cellar, between father and son. h e harmony between outside and inside,
between form and content, is also refl ected by the new label design.
BUT GOOD IDEAS MATTER TOO:
Ewald Gruber as one of Weinviertel’s pioneering estates gave impetus to the whole region. Among other things,
Ewald Gruber sen. established the “Weinquartier” on the historic main square of the city of Retz, where you
will fi nd 250 wines from all over the Weinviertel on 600 square meters in a stylish atmosphere. Besides being
the city’s premium wine store, the “Weinquartier” boasts a lounge and a restaurant and is an ideal venue for
wine tastings. Today, it is run by daughter Maria, who, along with her younger brother Johann, also looks after
the marketing aspect of the company. In addition to the wines crafted from their own vineyards in Röschitz,
the Grubers are also responsible for the wines sourced from the historic parcels of the Castle of Maissau and the
Abbey of Altenburg at the foot of Manhartsberg.

For centuries, Röschitz in Retzerland has been known for distinctive, exciting wines. h e “cool climate wines“ of Ewald Gruber are shaped by special Veltliner sports, expansive loess soils as well as southern and south-eastern sites ideally stretching along the 48th Parallel.
Röschitz stands for medium-quality off erings with single-vineyard character. h ey are mid-range also in terms of alcohol and body. h ese true classics of Austrian viniculture match particularly well with the classics of Austrian cuisine. As is well known, quality is made in the vineyard. Great quality, however, is made in single vineyards which, by their geology, exposition, microclimate and vine plantings, along with the vintner’s skill impart distinct characters to the wines sourced from them.
For years, if not decades, Ewald Gruber had meticulously observed all his plots. h us he found that the wines from a specifi c site always displayed something special, something of their own. h e objective was clear: to express this speciality, this personality of each single vineyard.

h e origins of the Castle of Maissau date back to the 13th century. Since 1537, it has been in the possession of the Abensperg and Traun family. Today’s appearance of the Castle of Maissau comes from several conversions and a fundamental renovation in 1870.
In 1114, vineyards were already mentioned in the fi rst chronicles citing the name of Maissau. Viticulture here is infl uenced by an extremely dry climate. On the other hand, an especially benefi cial microclimate is provided in the shelter of the nearby mountain called Manhartsberg. h e vineyards belonging to the Castle of Maissau thrive on the south-eastern slopes of Manhartsberg. A unique soil composition provides the optimum terroir for cultivating Grüner Veltliner vines. Ewald Gruber and Josef M. Schuster, wine expert at Del Fabro, a large beverage company near Vienna, created “Schloss Maissau Grüner Veltliner“. By selecting the best and ripest grapes from the south-eastern slopes of Manhartsberg, they have aimed to craft an outstanding wine that is far beyond the scope of a classic Gruner and has ranked among Austria’s premium off erings for years.

Alois Kracher, sweet wine legend from Burgenland, was spot on:
„WHAT A GRUNER! IT’S GOT EVERYTHING: PEPPER, GRAPEFRUIT,JUICINESS AND MELLOWNESS. A CLASSIC FROM VELTLINER’S HOMELAND
WITH MODERN BACKGROUND.“
h e siblings Ewald and Maria Gruber went into the family business with verve and commitment. Now the successful duo has started to cultivate and exploit the vineyards of Stift Altenburg in Limberg, which is only some kilometers from Röschitz.
h e unique occurrence of algal silicate soils imparts distinct mineral elements to Zweigelt and Merlot, making these wines off erings full of character with assignable origin. Up to 40-year-old vines form the basis of the choicest Gruners. A Chardonnay called “Dreißigviertel”, which is sourced from a single parcel situated on a mighty, loamy loess soil, rounds out the assortment. When inspecting these plots for the fi rst time, Maria and Ewald Gruber were fascinated by the incredible potential and valuable treasure in the possession of the convent.
