THE EXHIBITIONThe Freemasons are surrounded by rumour and mystery. They are reputed to be very influential, to be followers of an alternative religion, they are often linked to conspiracies, and their rituals and symbols are shrouded in secrecy.
It is exactly 300 years since organised Freemasonry came into existence in London: on 24 June 1717 four London lodges joined together to create a Grand Lodge.
The exhibition looks at the past and present of this fraternity, going into such topics as its aims, rituals and symbols; it invites visitors to examine the secrets of the lodges and the prejudices against Freemasons.
Find out more about the development of organised Freemasonry in the last 300 years: its emergence is closely linked with the Enlightenment in the 18th century and with the spread of Liberalism in the 19th century. The exhibition also gives you an idea of the fraternity today. You can hear interviews with members of Bern’s zur Hoffnung masonic lodge where they talk about what Freemasonry and being a Freemason means to them, and the striving for selfimprovement that it entails.
The high point of the exhibition is the chance to witness a ritual in a replica of the temple of the zur Hoffung lodge with original furnishings, which offers unusual glimpses into the unfamiliar world of the Freemasons.
