Next member’s meeting:• April 2013• September 2013 (election of new board)
• Task to develop a concept assigned to LK, BS, and CW by last MV
Minutes Strategy Meeting 2011 – OXR as Customers
Proposal for CXO Concept 1
Target audience
• primarily mid-sized CXOs
• Rationale:
– mid-sized CXOs target work which is complex enough to benefit from senior-level expertise and should have
a considerable lack of own broad senior-level expertise
– larger CXOs
• harder to approach (most likely reach-out to top management needed)
• some in-house senior-level expertise
– small CROs may not target or get work which is complex enough to benefit from senior-level expertise, i.e.,
they may work primarily along the expertise provided by the sponsor and for selected sub-tasks only
• Beside targeting primarily mid-sized CXOs, one test case of a larger CXO should be done if Conelis
members have contacts to senior-level decision makers in such a larger CXO
Proposal for CXO Concept 2
Earlier experience with CXOs (LK, BS, CW)
• Due of own experience of LK, BS & CW, the below concerns mainly CROs
• Gaps in senior-level expertise clearly there (see Case Study provided by BS)
• Business relevance clearly a given, e.g., bid-defence meetings or subject-matter based assessment of
feasibility and methodology
• However, CXOs often target free-lance consultants like Conelis members as potential door openers to
aquire new customers and business (impression confirmed during LK's CXO contacts at BioEurope 2012)
– CXO contacts during industry meetings are primarily the BDs of CXOs
– It is believed that other CXO management levels will have to be approached to generate business for Conelis
members
• High staff turn-around at lower and mid-level ranks of CXOs
Proposal for CXO Concept 3Conelis ramifications and needed clarification/agreement• Teaching approach discussed during the strategy meeting seen as potentially ineffective (high risk of pro-
bono tapping; high staff fluctuation at CXOs)• Conclusion of team: direct Conelis BD activities needed encompassing potentially:
– Collection of (senior) CXO contacts of Conelis members– Collection of case studies and potential products with USP– Development of initial PR material (case studies and potential products)– Generation of new ideas during direct contacts with CXOs (listening to needs of customers)
• Internal clarification about desirability and practicability– Clarification about desirability of activities in the separate Expertise Areas (led by Spokes Persons?)
• Capacity of Conelis members across Expertise Areas?• Area spokes persons as primary contacts?• Large-scale tasks vs smaller adhoc business?
– General clarifications:• Is a participation in BD activities of CXOs desired (door-opener)?• How to resolve potential conflicts of interest between acting as door-openers vs sponsors and being a benficiary of later contractual
work with the same sponsor?• Focus on subject-matter assignments and/or on management assignments?
Proposal for CXO Concept 4Next steps
• Agreement within Conelis Expertise Areas whether interest and capacity would be
there to justify Conelis BD activities with CXOs
• Agreement on proposed concept
– Identification of Conelis members who would be willing to act as• a door opener for CXOs and as a subject-matter expert (quid pro quo) under consideration of a
potential conflict of interest
• a subject-matter expert for defined assignments only
– Collection of senior-level contacts for mid-sized and large CXOs
– Brain storming among interested Conelis members about case studies and potential products
with USP (see examples)
– Develop PR for intital CXO contacts
– Indentification of volunteers of the concerned Conelis Expertise Areas
CXOs as Customers: Case Study 1 : Conelis / CRO
• Highly specialized Canadian CRO was requested by Sponsor to provide late preclinical workup
and human PoC in a (remote) CNS indication.
• Not having own expertise in-house CRO hired top level clinical academic consultant(s) in the
respective clinical field to assist with the PoC issues.
• CRO failed to convince Sponsor due to basing their proposal on academic advice that did not
fit into the concept of a rapid and robust PoC for further decision making (timelines, sample,
budget).
• Consultants familiar with the principles of drug development would have made a difference
for the CRO enabling them to generate a competive development plan and offer.
Bernd Schmidt, Nov 2012
CXOs as Customers: Case Study 2 : Conelis / CRO / Sponsor
• Specialized European CRO has conducted a unique Phase I study in patients with a rare disease in collaboration
with a Conelis member
• Unique knowledge regarding recruitment in the rare disease and in support of a partially disabled population
generated
• Such knowledge could be beneficial for a variety of sponsors, not only in the actual disease area (methodology has
some generic aspects)
• Joint publication of methodology between CRO and Conelis member done
• Symposium planned to educate sponsor decision-makers about options and ramifications to conduct such studies
• Conelis member agreed to act as a door opener in sponsor contacts
Christian Wolf, Nov 2012
CXOs as Customers: Conelis Products for CROs 1
Generic Gap Analysis• General principles in drug development considerably overlap between indications, at least for NCEs
• CROs may benefit from a “generic” gap analysis in their CDPs and feasibility assessments that
Conelis could provide, given the broad spectrum of development experience Conelis can offer
Bernd Schmidt, Nov 2012
CXOs as Customers: Conelis Products for CROs 2
Conelis Certification or Endorsement
• Conelis could offer to certify or endosre CXOs for contents
expertise and process competency after joint projects
• Endorsement could take form of an official statement for
use in presentation or website or alternatively in joint
publications
