Welcome to the Villnöss ValleyThe ALPINE PEARLS Association – for the promotion of sustainable tourism through environmentally-friendly transport –is bringing together partner regions and communes right throughout the Alps. This network of „pearls“ that move carefully through the Alps is being developed into a strong touristic brand that allows people to get around gently.

How Alpine Pearls were born ALPINE PEARLS is the result of two interrelated EU projects, which were prompted by an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water, and taken one step further to become a coordinated EU project. The focus of the

project is the creation of innovative, sustainable services for tourists, which combine tourist attractions with the advantages of getting around with environmentally friendly means of transport. Our objective over the coming years is to create an attracti-ve and environmentally-friendly transport service made up of small, mobile elements. This concept ensures that our visitors and residents can get around conveniently within our valley, as well as in eighbou-ring towns. We would like to pay a special word of thanks to our regional member of government, Dr. Thomas Widmann, who has been responsible for this project and who has given the 7 pearls of South Tyrol his full support.

Villnöss Valley – an Alpine Pearl in the Dolomites, a UNESCO world natural heritage site

Alpine Pearls is a rating for extraordinary holiday spots in the Alps. However, it is also a signpost to currently 27 locations in Austria, Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland. What distinguishes them all is that they offer more than just a pleasant stay. “Low-impact mobility” are the mainwords for anyone who wants to combine leisure-time fun with environmental awareness.

Here is an overview of the 27 Pearls: Arosa (CH), Bad Reichenhall (D), Berchtesgaden (D), Bled (SLO), Cesarole Reale (I), Chamois (I), Cogne (I), Deutschnofen (I), Forni di Sopra (I), Hinterstoder (A), Interlaken (CH), Les Gets (F), Limone Piemonte (I), Mallnitz (A), Moena (I), Neukirchen (A), Moos im Passeier (I), Pragelato (I), Prolognan (F), Ratschings (I), Sauris (I), Steinegg (I), Tiers (I), Valdidentro (I), Villnöss (I), Welschnofen (I), Werfenweng (A), Weissensee (A).

Teis Mineral MuseumTeis geodes

The Mineral Museum is housed in the clubhouse (Vereins-haus) in the centre of Teis in the Villnöss Valley. Museum experts have used contemporary educational techniques to create an originally-designed exhibition that feeds the ima-gination. The exhibition not only contains the famous Teis geodes, but also minerals from other areas within the Alps in which the collector, Paul Fischnaller, goes digging. An introductory film provides the uninitiated visitor with a comprehensive overview of how the crystals that are displayed in the museum are created and how they are com-posed. The museum shop stocks a wide range of literature on the subject, as well as souvenirs, jewellery and healing stones. The items on display are not for sale, and cannot be swapped.New, interesting findings are always being added to the exhibition by the collector, Paul Fischnaller.

Teis geodes can measure up to 20 cm in diameter. Geodes and agate almonds are embedded in their mother rock, a quartz porphyr tufa. Up to seven different minerals can be found in wonderful crystal formations inside the hollow cavity of these „druses“. Amethyst and quartz crystals stand out from the others due to their transparent purity, as does agate, with its almost geometrical coloured rings. Every geode cavity boasts its own little secret crystal garden, which is now on display in the museum.

One particular incentive for hiking in the Villnöss Alps is the new gentian-shaped pin. The basic pin can be purchased for € 3.00 at each of the lodges listed in the alpine log book. The petals can then be obtained free of charge in all the other lodges on purchasing food or drink.

The pin and its petals are not available from the tourist offi ce!

A few recommendations for relaxation and fun on a day off from the outdoors, all as part of an enjoyable holiday:

Rest: lie in for far longer than usual. Holiday greetings: write those postcards you promised or make any necessary calls home. Hairdressers: perhaps it is time for a summer haircut. Shopping: take a wander around our shops and buy a little something to take home for your relatives. The nearby towns of Klausen and Brixen offer excellent shopping facilities. Bowling: spend a fun couple of hours at the new bowling alley in the St. Peter leisure centre. Culture: visit palaces, castles, churches and museums. We highly recommend the minerals museum in Teis or the new nature reserve building in St. Magdalena. Wine tasting: enjoy the fi ne quality of South Tyrolean wines in the Klausner winery. Bus trips: head out on the routes offered by the Eisack Valley bus companies.
