Euer Kalle Nicolai
15 years - or: The whole is greater than the sum of the partsDevelopment, design and manufacture of bicycles is our passion. Our product is the welded link between all components of a bicycle. Each component can make use of its assets only if they are connected to a long term durable structure in an optimal way. This structure is commonly known as a bicycle frame and we’ve been building these bicycle frames since August 1995.
A design change on a bike, a chassis or a G-BOXX always needs to be an improvement to your ride. As a Mechanical Engineer I look at the bike as a dynamic system, as a whole (in terms of control engineering), in which the purely static view from a measurement laboratory does not do justice to the bike in a correct way. Even for me, it’s fascinating to see that together with our fellow athletes, we are able to refine the systems year after year in order to reach a faster lap time for example or, simply to have more fun. Of course, I must admit that our „Extra Love“ options are just taking care of the bike’s appearance, but this has at least one positive side effect on the mental strength of an athlete.
Our athletes are the welded links between us and the Nicolai bike. Each component can make use of its assets only if they are connected to a long term durable structure in an optimal way. This structure is commonly known as friendship and we’ve been building these friendships since August 1995.
Apart from our friends and athletes, we would like to thank above all, the people who have decided to purchase a bike from us over the last fifteen years. It is to their credit that we are able to implement innovations, which ultimately lead to better bikes. Of course we’ve suffered setbacks along the way. But from the stones that have lain in our path we’ve always been able to build a road into the future. This catalogue is our anniversary year book and it shows that a lot of new developments often start as ‘crazy’ projects but slowly establish their rightful place in the product range. Whether a product can defend its place in the line is heavily influenced by the dialogue with the people who use our products. To enhance this dialogue in 2011 we will be organizing a lot of test camps. At Nicolai we’ve called this project the ‘German road trip’ and you can more about it at: www.nicolai.net.
Cheers and all the best,
Kalle Nicolai
We don't follow every trend – ‘why a Nicolai looks the way it does’Nicolai frames have got straight tubes with a circular cross sections for the main frame, and straight tubes with rectangular cross sections for the rear end. This construction means that the loads are exerted into the frame intelligently. The isoperimetric character of a circle, i.e. the minimum length of a line within a maximum enclosed area, allows for a minimum of material usage with a maximum torsional load. A straight tube is the shortest and lightest linking structure between two load bearing points. A rectangular cross section is the best design to take bending loads. These simple design principles give Nicolai frames their shape.
During our 15 years experience of building frames we've learned a lot - especially about the design of the most structurally significant parts. Take, for example, our head tubes: although we now offer all common head tube standards, most Nicolai frames are still ordered and built with a 1 1/8 inch head tube. It’s not that surprising since, despite various innovations over the years, 1 1/8 head tubes still provide a very good stiffness-to-weight ratio. We believe the best solution for most riders is still an a-headset with a short cup pressed in on top and a deep insertion cup at the bottom - we don't know any rider who has ever had problems with this set-up. We should point out that we don't build our 1 1/8 tubes with the common slip fit but with a real press fit: a 33,82 (+/- 0,02) mm bore and an undersize of 0,10 mm. When pressing in the bearing cups the head tube is subject to an elastic deformation so the headset cups are held in with a much higher pressure than normal. This means you need professional tools for the job but has the benefit that you can fit
and remove a headset several times without the quality of the press fit becoming an issue. Different Nicolai frames have got different 1 1/8 head tubes as the wall thicknesses and the degree of tapering depend on the intended use of the frame.
In extreme cases the loads imposed on mountain bike frames can be truly massive and certain parts of the frame structure can be subjected to a load that are outside the design limits. An engineer can dictate the characteristics of a frame through the choice of alloy as well as the way the material is
processed - ie heat treating. We take into account the yield point and the rigidity as well as the breaking point. With a Nicolai frame each and every tube and machined or turned part has already got specific material properties before it is welded together into the frame. We think about
the final use of the frame, and structural loads that are expected for a particular frame part when choosing the particular materials to use in manufacture. Components like the seat stays that are subject to a strong bending load are made of aluminium with a higher elastic limit. A seat tube will use an alloy with a higher breaking strain as this component is subjected to a greater bending force if overloaded. Other parts like top and down tubes have got properties that allow plastic deformation before breaking.
Nicolai frames should not break under overload but should deform. Extreme riding situations should not, of course, lead to an overload but when you do go beyond the design limits of the frame then the intention is that the frames structure will remain intact. It’s a lot safer this way.
GEAR BOX BIKES
The derailleur system that’s typically seen on mountainbikes was originally developed for road racing bikes. With its delicate exposed components it has a tough time on rough off road trails. Damage to the drivetrain can too often cause a big ride to be cut short, an early trip home from the bike park or the premature end to racing ambitions. On a gearbox bike all shifting operations take place inside the sealed gearbox where moving components are well protected from dirt and damage. The G-Boxx is smooth-running and precise with Rohloff® technology that allows you to shift any number of gears in any riding situation even when stationary. The swing arm pivot is in line with the drive and well above the BB to give an ideal wheel path and eliminating rider induced input on the suspension. As the weight of a G-Boxx bike is low and central you get excellent handling on the trail and the bike feels much lighter than the scales indicate. The compact size of the G-Boxx provides extra ground clearance and in case you do smack it on a tree or rock whilst riding then the tough casing will take impacts without difficulty. Another advantage of the G-Boxx 1 system is the three-part COR rear hub that enables the rear wheel to be released in seconds leaving the chain on the sprocket, and the brake disc attached to the frame.
NUCLEON E2Downhill Racing | Extreme Freeride

Since we removed the Nucleon Evo from our range in 2008 we‘ve repeatedly been approached with requests for a freeride and downhill bike with G-Boxx 1 and 14-speed Rohloff® technology. We‘ve now realized that we made a mistake. The Evo was particularly popular in Asian countries and the Ion GB2 successor was unable to fill its shoes. The new Nucleon E2 (the next rung on the evolutionary ladder) is not only our new technology flagship, is is also a sign of our appreciation for our most loyal and engaged customers. These are the ones that never tire of providing us with ideas, motivation and criticism, who will not abate in their insistence until we comply with their demands. With the Nucleon E2 we now hope to strike the right chord with the technology fanatics among you. So are we being inconsistent? We don‘t think so. We’ve already achieved this with the Nucleon AM: combining the advantages of the mature technology of the Roholoff® G-Boxx 1 and the COR rear with the modern versatile geometry of our Helius AM. The Nucleon E2 now combines the reliability and performance of the G-Boxx 1 system with the strength of our gravity machine - the Ion ST. The result is a superior extreme freeride and downhill frame. Of course the various evolutionary stages in development of our gear box bikes over the last 10 years is not an issue for owners - we guarantee availability of service and replacement parts for each of them for at least 10 years (as we do for for all Nicolai models). As an optional extra we offer a custom shimmed Cane Creek Double Barrel Shock for the Nucleon E2 frame.

Adjustable travelMost Nicolai models have adjustable travel settings but the feedback that we get from Nicolai riders has shown us that most customers just ride their frame the way it is delivered: factory-set at the max travel. However, sometimes less is more so here is something to try... on the Helius AM for example: when you mount the shock one hole lower on the rocker link then the rear travel is reduced by about 12 mm. On smoother trails this will make the bike easier to ride saving you energy and making the bike more efficient on long rides and day trips. Then take a look at the Ion ST: the factory setting with the shock mounted to the top hole of the rocker link provides 230 mm of travel. When the shock is mounted in the next hole down then the travel is reduced to 200 mm. Most racers actually ride the Ion ST in the 200 mm setup and they swear that it is faster that way. Running with less travel has the added benefit of reducing the stroke-to-travel ratio which leads to better, and more direct, damping performance.
What is the effect on different Nicolai models when the shock is mounted to a higher or lower position?
Single pivot rear:(Ufo ST, Ufo DS, Nonius CC)higher position: less travel; lower position: more travel
Four bar linkage with rocker link at the top tube:(all Helius models and Nucleon AM)higher position: more travel, lower position: less travel
Four bar linkage with rocker link at the down tube:(Nucleon E2, Ion ST)higher position: less travel, lower position: more travel

ION STThe Ion ST is the most successful Nicolai downhill frame of all time having won countless podium finishes and trophies. This frame may be the workhorse of the Nicolai team riders but its a bike that will benefit all riders - not just the pro’s. Downhill should first and foremost be about speed and fun and not just about competition. The Ion geometry is based around a long front end combined with a short rear - it is this that gives it the awesome tracking and stability in corners and fast turns whilst keeping the bike agile on technical trails. Frame weight is a very reasonable 4.1kg* and this, combined with a neutral rear suspension, allows aggressive

acceleration and a playful handling. We have given it a slightly progressive suspension curve to provide the maximum usable travel whilst resisting heavy bottom-out on heavy landings. The harder the track gets the better the Ion ST can play to its strengths. It is little surprise that the Ion ST has become one of the most ridden downhill bikes on the German National Series.
As an optional extra on the ION ST we can offer a Cane Creek Double Barrel Shock that is custom shimmed for the frame.

Seat angle - effective or virtualThe Helius AFR seat tube design is different from classic frame designs and doesn't end on the BB housing but rather further to the front on the down tube. This re-arrangement of the seat tube position was necessary to achieve enough travel while keeping the chain-stay short at the same time for maximum maneuverability. Also the seat post remains sunken thanks to the continuous seat tube.To adjust the sitting position we have flattened the seat tube angle a few degrees. To show you that a the flatter Helius AFR seat tube is still as suitable for long trail ridings as the steeper one of the Helius AM we have prepared a graphic showing both seat positions. As you can see they have almost identical seat positions once the seat post is extended, which means they have almost the same virtual seat tube angle.
HELIUS AFRFreeride
You will see AFR written after all our freeride frames. As you would expect, the Helius AFR will take on anything you can imagine when you think of freeriding: singletrack descending, jumps, drops and gaps, bike parks, slope style, north shore, downhill racing or just messing in the woods with your riding buddies. The AFR frame has up to 205 mm of rear travel and is designed for long freeride and DH forks with 180 to 203 mm of travel. Despite its intended use, the AFR frame tips the scales at only 4 kg* thanks to a design that optimises weight and stability. Through the use of the efficient Horst-Link rear the Helius AFR ac-celerates quickly while the dropped top tube, offset seat tube, and the low bottom bracket give you plenty of control and the space to style it up on your local trails.
As an extra option for the Helius AFR we can offer a Cane Creek Double Barrel Shock that is exclusively custom tuned to the frame.

Two shocks of the same model with the same settings may appear identical from the outside and yet perform completely differently depending on how the internals are tuned. Shock manufacturers offer their shocks in different ‘tunes’ to obtain specific ride characteristics to suit different suspension designs or riding styles. Shims are used within the damping circuit of the shock to regulate the oil flow and to obtain a different ‘tune’ the number, size, and characteristics of the shims is varied. We consider the specific suspension requirements of each Nicolai frame and work with the shock manufacturers to ensure that all of the shocks we supply are delivered with the optimum tune for the particular Nicolai model. For this reason we strongly reccomend that your frame is ordered complete with shock - using an old shock from another bike or another source might lead to a drop in performance. We have gone one step further in our offer of the Cane Creek Double Barrel® Shock. Rather than offering a standard tune we have worked with Cane Creek to develop a specific tune matched to our frames.
Cane Creek Double Barrel® – customized for Nicolai1.

Cane Creek Double Barrel® – customized for Nicolai1. Function and features: Uniquely for a mountain
bike shock, the Cane Creek Double Barrel (CCDB) utilizes a twin tube design. The main body of the damper contains two concentric tubes which allows the damping oil to flow through the damping control valves. On the CCDB, these damping control valves are located at the ‘top’ of the shock. During the compression stroke (when the wheel is moving towards the bike) the oil in the inner tube is forced toward the damping control valves. After passing through the compression damping valves the oil is returned to the rebound side of the piston via the space between the inner and outer tubes. During rebound the opposite is true, the oil passes between the two concentric tubes through the rebound damping valves and returns to the compression side. This is fundamentally different from traditional shocks and is the reason for the CCDBs huge adjustment range. Since a much greater volume of oil is routed through the external adjusters than on a traditional shock, the Cane Creek Double Barrel is more adjustable and has more consistent performance.
2. Adjustability and range of use: The advantage of increased adjustability is especially well utilized on bikes with varying setups, for example multiple travel settings, and where the bike will be used for a variety of different applications - ie enduro, trail, DH. The shock is particularly suited to the ION, NUCLEON and HELIUS models. Since shock rate varies with travel setting, the large adjustment range of the CCDB allows an optimised shock setting for each travel setting. You can see the shock compression curves on our website - www.nicolai.net. The CCDB would allow you to set the shock up plush with good bottom-out control for DH; tune in compression damping to limit rider induced suspension movement for general trail riding; and a compromise between the two for Enduro.
3. Rear shock setup: 3.1 FIGURE 10: Low Speed Compression - adjusts sensitivity to rider induced suspension movement and suspension response on rolling terrain.
3.2 FIGURE 11: Low Speed Rebound - similar to the rebound adjuster on most other shocks. Counters slow rebound speeds caused by unsprung elements of frame and balances spring forces. 3.3 FIGURE 12: High Speed Compression - controls shock sensitivity to larger impacts and controls the bottom out from drops. Also controls high speed bumps. 3.4 FIGURE 13: High Speed Rebound - this control adjusts how the shock returns from large impacts. This adjuster is unique to the CCDB and allows for good low speed rebound settings without causing the shock to pack down. Gives control of the rebound after big hits.
4. Resistance to cavitation - A secondary advantage of the twin tube design is that the reservoir pressurizes both sides of the main piston. This reduces the chances of oil cavitation which keeps the damping consistent regardless of shaft velocity. This also leads to longer oil life.
5. Precision machined shaft and high tolerance seals - The small diameter precision machined steel shaft helps keep stiction to a minimum resulting in unbeatable low speed shock sensitivity. Seals and sealing surfaces are matched for long term durability and minimal maintenance.
6. Springs - Springs are available in steel and titanium from 200lb/in to 650lb/in depending on damper size (stroke and eye to eye).
We demonstrated a similar high and low speed compression damping principle on our Nicolai Trombone model from 2000. As Nicolai’s own shock never made it to mass production we are delighted that this advanced shock technology can now be offered through the Cane Creek Double Barrel.
Hammerschmidt® Pimp Kit - more than just the lookOf course it's an eye-catcher for the drive-train, same as our anodised Extra Love parts attract the attention on the frames. But the Hammerschmidt® Pimp Kit is not only eye-candy. It also has two new technical improvements compared to its original. The bash guard gets thinner towards the outer end which allows greater clearance for the ankles. Another hidden improvement is the cable routing. While the original Hammerschmidt® cable routing has a straight exit followed by an exposed and bent cable, our optimised cable routing has a perfectly NICOLAI downtube design fitted angle. Less exposed parts means less damage caused by rocks, roots and fallen trees.

AM stands for All Mountain and is used to denote all our enduro frames. These are solid, nigh on indestructible, bikes which whilst clearly leaning towards gravity are still light enough to access the mountains even if you don't have access to a lift or a helicopter. The Helius AM is now our biggest selling frame because it covers all types of riding - from bike parks to all day epic adventures and everything inbetween. The only limits are your own. The Helius AM combines 170 mm of plush travel with a relatively lightweight and agile feel. Your riding position is central, upright, and relaxed giving good control in all riding situations whether you are riding rough trails, jumps, north shore ladders, drops or fast descents. The Helius AM provides a superior all round performance and huge downhill capability without making climbing too tortuous.
As an extra option for the Helius AM we can offer a Cane Creek Double Barrel Shock that is exclusively custom tuned to the frame.
Helius dropout standardsOn all our Helius models we offer three different dropout standards as no-cost options. Before placing your order you need to decide what kind of rear hub and related shifting system you would like to use or what options you want to keep open. The 10 mm quick release dropout (QR10) is the lightest solution and allows the use of standard hubs with conventional quick releases. To use your Helius with Rohloff® hubs we offer the slightly heavier Rohloff® dropouts which have a longer slot on the left hand side to fit the OEM-1 axleplate of the Rohloff® hub. These also accept standard quick-release hubs. For maximum rigidity and the best tracking of the rear wheel we recommend the 12mm through axle dropout option. These dropouts can be used in combination with a 12mm axle from Nicolai or the Rock Shox Maxle. You cannot use a 10mm QR or Rohloff® hub with this option.
WO ABSTEIGEN zU GEFäHRLICH WIRD, BEGINNT ALL MOUNTAIN TRIAL
The typical mountain bike disciplines are downhill (DH), cross country (XC), freeride (FR) and all mountain (AM). They all have one characteristic in common; it’s all about speed and flow…the more the better. Together with my team mate Marco Hösel we recently tried a change in style. Crossing over Marco’s skills in bike trial and my experiences in downhill racing we wanted to test new waters.I know Marco from various former MTB World Championships. After my DH training I often visited him training on his bike trial parcours, and performing magical moves over the obstacles. Being 6 times World Trials Champion Marco is one of the most successful trial athletes in the world. No surprise then that he is pretty well known on the MTB scene, although trials is still considered as an exotic discipline…but why?The key to trials is not speed but skill. The course consists of obstacles that need to be overcome by bike without touching the ground with the feet. The obstacles are meters high and sometimes no wider than a tire thickness. Very few people realize how demanding cycle sport can be without speed. I can say it from my own personal experiences after training my trials skills during my winter training. Trials is one of the hardest MTB disciplines but done properly can appear so easy.

ALL MOUNTAIN TRIALS STARTS WHERE DISMOUNTING GETS TOO DANGEROUS
a casual bike ride just for fun. We both exchanged our competition bikes for the Helius AM All Mountain bike. We were both curious how it would feel to bring our special skills into ordinary trail riding. How would it be to combine downhill skills and trial skills? Marco is able to ride the Helius AM through craziest and most difficult terrains with his trial techniques. That’s what I recognized when we swapped our bikes last year on a training session. He felt at home on the bike straightaway and he was impressed with its maneuverability. That was the beginning of our joint-venture idea. Also I tried to train my trial skills and started watching out for suitable training spots and “playgrounds”. This August our project came to fruition and we held our first photo shooting in the Thuringian forest in Germany. As we didn’t know how to call our project we named it “All mountain trials”. We were astonished what you could do with trials skills on trails. We chased ourselves over the craziest obstacles. One of the highlights was Marco’s “tree”-riding interlude on a fallen tree that hung 3m above the ground. He rolled it from end to end with crazy speed for all the worlds as if he was coasting down a single-trail.I chose some very steep and narrow rock downhills people wouldn’t even walk down. Also jumping onto rocks up to 1,20m high was no big deal for us. Overall we always tried to keep our flow avoiding the brakes as much as possible.

Our next spot was a rocky stream bed. Due to hard rain-fall the days before the little stream turned into a torrent and the rocks were extremely slippery. But this didn’t stop us from riding the rock section down the stream. We even managed to climb up and drop down cascades. We took on every challenge and we conquered them all. The only difficulty on the rocks was walking. When Marco slipped away he just said: “I should have ridden instead of walking, it’s easier and safer moving on two wheels”. In fact, I was impressed how safe he could ride on his 170mm Helius AM from rock to rock, almost as if he was riding his 20” trials bike. Our all mountain tour went through steep and technical climbs to the summit, over rocks, through a stream bed and ended on a narrow, fast single-trail down to where we started. I felt at home again riding full throttle down the hill. The Helius AM had to suffer my riding style used from my ION ST racing bike, but it seamed the bike wasn’t really overstrained. This was part of my marvelous experience with this bike. Looking back over our tour we recognized how versatile a Helius AM can be and how varied an all mountain tour is.Our slogan to our new discipline:
“All Mountain trials starts where dismounting gets too dangerous.”
We keep going!

Bolt on cable guidesOur bolt on CNC’d cable guides look seriously cool and are available in a range of anodised colours so you can give your frame a personal touch but we should explain the technical reasons that led us to decide on this solution. Whenever a weld is added to a tube, the heat changes the metal structure and leads to marginal weakening of the aluminium compared to its original state. By using a bolt-on cable guide we avoid having to weld the tubing unneccessarily and reducing the strength of the frame. The biggest advantage however is the modularity of this system. Through the choice of various designs of bolt on cable guides we can offer a number of cable run options. Single mounts, double mounts or offset (double cranked) mounts. The offset mounts can be turned through 180 degrees and, depending on the mounting direction, the cables will leave either at 4 o‘ clock or 8 o‘ clock. This makes for clean bends and gives a perfect cable run when, for example, double Rohloff® cables are routed along one side of the steerer tube.
Recently we have been fitting our Helius frames with special swing-arm cable mounts, in order to minimise the cable bending from the moving suspension. This prevents the wires inside the cable outers coming out of the ends and helps to ensure long term precise shifting without re-adjustment. The black machined Delrin protector on our chainstays is also a cable guide. It both protects the stay and the shifting cable from the chain and with its angled exit puts the cable in a perfect line for the rear derailleur.
Bushings or axleFor fitting the shocks we use two different mounting kits. For an overall width up to 25 mm we use aluminium bushings pressed into the shock’s
bearings from both sides. For wider fittings we only use a steel axle. If bushings were to be pressed in a wider fitting there is a risk that under peak loads the bushing deforms with the result that the shock mounting bolt bends or breaks. A full width steel axle is capable of carrying even the highest peak loads safely.
The Nicolai 135x12 bolt-through systemMost Nicolai frames are now compatible with the bolt-through system. For a number of models this has already become the standard or it is available as an option without an upcharge. Bolt through hubs are stiffer than quick release hubs and there are now a lot of capable hubs and wheelsets on the market at fair prices. That’s all common knowledge but we would like to explain why we've decided on the 135x12 mm system in particular. (150x12 for Ion ST)
QR-10 quick release hubs make still have a small advantage in weight so it's still preferable to use them for XC and marathon riding where, normally, loads are not extreme. However, with a QR-10 rear hub the interface mainly relies on friction between the hub and dropout - the quick release lever itself is not able to have any real impact on the stiffness of the rear. That is why, for intense bike use in rough terrain, we recommend the bolt through system.
The Nicolai bolt through system through is designed around the common 135x12 mm standard. Rear hubs of this standard have got an end-to-end hollow axle with an outer diameter of 18 – 20 mm and an inner diameter of 12 mm. When the bolt is attached the hollow hub axle is pressed with positive locking force between the drop outs so that the rear hub, and the bolt itself, become integrated, load-bearing, components of the frame. This makes the whole rear end of the bike perceptibly stiffer.
Compared to other rear axle systems, which use a fine pitch thread, the Nicolai design comes with a regular metric 12 mm thread that allows easy and hassle-free mounting even in sandy or muddy conditions. The only tool required is a 6 mm Allen key. If the axle once should sieze after a long period of non-use, or if the 6 mm inner socket should round off, the Nicolai axle can also be released and mounted with a 17 mm ring spanner. Last, but by no means least, the Nicolai bolt through system is fully compatible with the Rock Shox Rear Maxle® standard.
The next generation of bushingsSynthetic bushings are manufactured through an injection moulding process. The tolerances in this process are +/- 0.05 mm. This is already a very good tolerance. We always strive to be better than just good and as we‘ve got the technical ability we have started to manufacture our own bushings on our CNC turning lathes. This process gives even closer tolerances for much lower stiction
and a perfect grease-gap between the bushing and axle. Since 2009 we have already been manufacturing our own ceramic coated precision-ground bearing axles that are also made to extremely low tolerances. The combination of our new bushings with these axles provides a noticeable reduction in play. This means we now need less preload on the bushing unit, giving a lower breakaway torque which in turn means a more sensitive response from the rear suspension.
A decisive role is played by the material characteristics of the different materials used to manufacture synthetic bushings. Materials with superior lubricating properties sometimes have a strongly hygroscopic character that can be between 1% and 5% of the material volume. So while the bearing is running freely under dry conditions in might expand with higher air humidity. In contrast the synthetic bushing material we‘ve chosen has
got a humidity absorption of max 0,3%. This leads to a consistently high performance regardless of the weather conditions when you’re riding. In order to improve the bearing characteristics further we‘ve chosen a synthetic material with a molecularly embedded lubricant which provides superior performance with a friction coefficient of μ 0,2.
In addition to humidity absorption and friction coefficient, another important consideration for buhings is the resistance to abrasive wear. The bearing material we‘ve chosen provides the best ratio of friction coefficient and resistance to abrasive wear of any material currently available. We ask you to understand that we’d like to keep the name of our new wonder material a company secret.
Seat tube gusset - just decoration or real functionThe characteristic NICOLAI seat tube gusset has an explicit function: It enables lower top tube designs and supports the projected end of the seat tube, while riding with great extended seat posts. Thus you'll find these gussets on all our NICOLAI mountain bike frames from size M and beyond. Our small size frames are not equipped with seat tube gussets as there is insufficient space on the small tube projection and also we don't expect our smaller clients to use the seat posts at the highest adjustment. Please note that the seat tube gusset often shown on our catalogue frames is not a decoration or a mandatory design characteristic. It's a functional feature used on frames bigger than size M.
Anodising - which colour for which modelIn addition to powder coating, a heat fixed coating process that covers the frame with a durable plastic layer, we also offer coloured anodised finishes. Anodisation is an electrochemical process in which a thin coloured oxide layer is formed on the aluminium surface. Anodised parts have
got a harder, more scratch-proof surface and a lower weight than powder-coated or painted parts. However, the oxide layer is thin and can easily be pierced. Whilst powder coating fills machine marks on a frame with anodisation tooling marks from the manufacturing process remain visible. When welded frames or welded parts get anodised, heat induced changes are induced to the material and the different alloys used in the frame components will result in different hues. Anodisation covers nothing. It displays exactly how a frame and its parts have been manufactured and the lighter the anodised colour, the more obvious this is.As different colours require different sized baths, we can‘t unfortunately offer every frame model in every available colour. The hard tail frames especially are too big, whereas full suspension frames are disassembled and therefore don‘t have any colour limitations. The following list shows the restrictions regarding frame types and colours:
Anodisation colours available for all models: black, bronze, blue, red, green, gold
Anodisation colours available for full suspension frames only: violet, titanium, orange
HELIUS ACAll-Mountain, All-Country, Trailbike

Ask your typical biker what their favourite type of riding is and the answer is almost always the same: singletrack! It’s the narrow hidden trails that follow the contour lines of a ridge or a river valley that provide the biggest highs in our sport: adventure, nature, thrills and flow. In order to get the maximum joy of riding on singletrack you need a bike that climbs as well as it descends. You need a bike that is lively and agile but with enough travel to be plush and stable on the downhills. The Helius AC unites these features in one bike. The low slung, compact, frame and short chain stays all contribute to its excellent trail handling. Nearly 150 mm of rear travel allow you to take the roughest lines but, thanks to the patented Horst-Link suspension system, the AC is a very efficient climber too. With the Helius AC we really have created the perfect all rounder.

Possible future modi for an e-mountainbike1. max power: The human power is measured
(torque takes rotational frequency) and the result is multiplied with a certain factor. This factor can be chosen by the rider (support factor)
2. tour biker: a constant speed is wanted, uphill the same as downhill. So this a speed depending mode (as an addition to mode 1.)
3. pedaling frequency + torque: power support will be added in a linear way to the torque until a preset pedalling frequency is reached. After it is reached the support smoothly stops.
4. range optimisation: A preset distance shall be reached with the available battery power. Combined with a GPS route planner elevation profile can be added in an intelligent way.
5. aerobic reach – endurance: In combination with a pulse gauger motor support is added disproportionally (and again linear to the torque), when certain pulse ration is exceeded..
UFO STFreeride | Hobby Downhill

The Ufo ST is a reliable and sturdy freeride frame. The seriously tough construction means that there are almost no limits to what you can use it for. The single pivot suspension system is tried and tested and makes maintenance really simple. Keeping things simple also means that we can offer this frame at a really attractive price. The Ufo ST still provides plenty of travel and it’s all usable and easy to control. For 2011 we've given it a face lift: the gussets are leaner, machined parts have been further trimmed to save weight, and there is an ISCG-Hammerschmidt® mount. The result - lower weight and greater versatility. The Ufo ST is a fun machine for local series downhill races, amateur racers and of course for flinging around your local bike park. We also offer the UFO with an optional derailleur tower - this reduces the maximum rear travel setting but gives you the option of climbing to the top of your local trails or running it as a (very) hard core trail bike.

2MXTBHardtail Downhill | Freeride
The 2MXTB does not fit neatly into any conventional bike category and is probably the only hardtail that is built especially for freeride
and downhill use. The 2MXTB can take long triple-crown or freeride forks and even provides space for 3 inch wide tires. The 2MXTB is a monster bike - ideal for riders who break everything they get their
hands on. On the 2MXTB they will have met their match. Unlike a downhill full suspension frame the 2MXTB requires no special
service or maintenance. This machine is for fun only.

BMXTBDirt | Street | 4X
In 1997 the BMXTB was one of the first dual and dirt hardtails on the planet. It has seen continuous refinement and development from the likes of big-dirt rider Joscha Forstreuter, all-round talent Heiko Hirzbruch, world cup 4-X racer Roger Rinderknecht and our current rider David Graf. Through the engagement and different influences of these skilled riders over the years, the BMXTB has become the strong all-round machine that it is now. YOu need a perfectly balanced design for a frame to excel in all manner of extreme riding. The BMXTB is not a specialist with a narrow skill base - you can use this bike to have fun on north-shore trails as well as in a skate park. It is just as capable for 4-X racing as it is for dirt jumping. The BMXTB can be run as a single speed, with a Gates Carbon Drive, or with a regular drivetrain. The geometry is even versatile enough to be loads of fun for regular trail riding.

BMXTB RACE
When a BMXTB is intended for use as a pure 4X race bike or BMX cruiser you can specify the frame with an extra light tubeset and lighter weight machined parts. It then becomes the BMXTB Race. At least half a pound of weight can be saved this way giving the potential for even faster starts and sprints. However, in its race incarnation you don’t get safety margin that allows the regular BMXTB to be given unlimited hardcore usage and abuse - this is a race machine only.In this year’s 4-X world cup Gates-Nicolai Team rider David Graf was breathing down Jarret Graves' neck. Fingers crossed he’ll pass him next season on his BMXTB race.

The Argon familyThe Argon was our first hardtail for cross country and tour riding. In order to optimise compatibility with the Rohloff Speedhub®, we designed an Argon CC variation with sliding horizontal drop outs for tensioning the chain. This is the Argon Rohloff® or, for short, the Argon RoCC. We also developed our first road racing bike, the Argon Road. In 2005 we enlarged the Argon family with an enduro hard tail, the Argon FR. If we had followed the same naming conventions then it would have been called Argon RoFR as it has also got horizontal sliding drop outs like the Argon RoCC. Three years later the Argon family got another child, this time a trekking-bike, the Argon TR. So far all Argon models have had one thing in common: the light and stiff hollow-weld chain stay yoke (HWT) made from two machined half shells welded together. All Argon models can be adapted for the Gates Carbon Drive. Due to the larger width of its front sprocket the Gates drive demanded a modified, narrower, chain stay yoke as the overall width of the original HWT yoke was too great. We have now designed a new asymmetric HWT yoke that can take the Gates CD system and also increases the stiffness of the rear. When you order an Argon frame with the sliding horizontal dropouts for Hub Gear or single speed but without the Gates CD option, then the frame will get the original HWT yoke. There is one exception from this rule: Due to its narrower yoke design for road tires, the Argon Road will always get the original HWT yoke, even when ordered with the Gates CD option.
ARGON FR | FR-CDHardtail-Enduro | All-Mountain | Trailbike

Despite the most modern rear suspension systems and “intelligent” shocks, in moderate terrain a traditional
hard-tail is still the most efficient way to ride. Nothing accelerates better or feels more lively.
When two bikers are talking about fun then they‘re not necessarily talking about the same thing. For one fun means riding without exertion, playing instead of working, preferably downhill. For the other fun might mean riding with single minded purpose of propelling
the bike forward, not moving a single gram more than necessary, and not wasting a single joule in compressing the suspension. The Argon should
be the first choice for this second category of biker. The result of our years of evolution
is a perfectly engineered frame with a classic design, costly machined stiff and
light hollow weld parts and a perfect all-round geometry. The Argon is a sporty machine but it‘s not limited to racing only. For ambitious tour
riders, messengers, and hard core riders who understand the value
of a durable and long-lasting product, the Argon is the
perfect bike.
The Argon FR is a hardtail with the character of an enduro bike. Its geometry is designed for long travel forks up to 150 mm. Its lowered top tube, long front frame and the short, stiff, rear make it the perfect bike for action orientated riding on challenging singletrack. Sitting upright and relaxed, centred on the bike, you are in full control when the going gets tough. Fast trail rides, jumps, and technical descents are the strengths of the Argon FR, even though it lacks rear suspension. The Argon FR rear offers plenty of room for fat enduro and freeride tyres it has the low weight and the efficient acceleration of a hard tail. Even with a high quality sealed bearing, the linkages of a full suspension enduro bike will eventually need maintenance, especially under wet and muddy conditions. The Argon FR gives you the option of a hassle-free bike that can handle big trails and that knows no bad weather – only bad clothes.

Also, wann steigst Du um?
Gates Carbon Drive The Gates Carbon Drive is no longer a novelty. Working with our Partner company Universal Transmissions, the US manufacturer Gates has made this carbon fibre reinforced belt drive a real alternative for bikes as it can be used with all common rear hub standards. Many manufacturers are now offering models with the Carbon Drive system but the first bikes on the road came from our factory. We’ve maintained this lead in development and offer a perfect adaptation of Gates CD for all Nicolai hardtails. What are the particular advantages of the Gates Carbon Drive? Firstly, with the Carbon Drive you will never have to oil your chain as the system is dry running. No more corrosion, no more rattling or squeaking, no more greasy, dirty fingers when mounting the wheel. The carbon drive leaves all the old annoyances of chains behind and at the same time it provides a longer life time than a unmaintained chain. With a weight of only 80 g it brings a significant reduction in weight. The Carbon Drive is made of high-tensile carbon fibres embedded in a resistant polyurethane synthetic cover that enables a completely new riding experience. With the Carbon Drive the rider’s energy is transferred directly into forward motion with no “rubber band” sensation. So, when are you going to make the switch?
Gates ready In order to fit a bike with the Gates Carbon Drive system, certain technical requirements must be met. The frame needs a break in the drive side of the rear triangle in order to insert the belt as the belt cannot be split. To achieve this we‘ve designed a low profile removeable part above the right dropout. A Gates frame also needs the ability to tension the belt. For this we use horizontal drop outs that slide precisely in grooves on the frame. These have “chain tugs” adjusted with a hex socket to simplify rear wheel alignment and easily set the perfect belt tension. For correct operation of the Gates Carbon Drive a precise belt line is essential. Unlike a chain, the Carbon Drive cannot cope with any mis-alignment - only perfect frame alignment and a bottom bracket axle and rear axle perfectly in line will give trouble free operation and a long belt life life. Our close R&D partnership with the Gates company during the design of the Carbon Drive was the ideal way to bring this technology to the public. This means we can guarantee the perfect function of the system when used with a Nicolai frame.

Euer Georges
Georges Bigoni, father of our downhill team rider Joris, told us about his dream. He wanted to cycle around Mont Blanc as he had done 20 years ago. This adventure sounded interesting to us, too, and so we provided him with a bike: The Argon FR with GATES Carbondrive belt drive and a Rohloff 14 gear internal-gear hub. This combination seemed to be technically ideal for the tour. The Rohloff hub guarantees minimal risk of a failure on the drive. Moreover, the Argon FR is a light All Mountain Hardtail that not only has the usual climbing properties but also offers the possibility of riding longer fork travels, thus increasing fun and security for every rider on downhill runs in the Alps. Last but not least, the GATES Carbondrive belt drive is light, quiet and – what we wanted to demonstrate – stable under the highest pedal pressure.
„Heavy snowfall in May put paid to our plans. Mont Blanc was buried under snow for the rest of the summer, making a tour even in mid July both impossible for the bike as well as by car for the photo and video crew. However, during our stay at Megavalanche in Alpe d’Huez we discovered by chance the region ‘Les Sybelles’ with its distinctive trident-like mountain peaks. Exploring the area, we were asked by a local first about the extraordinary bike and then about the crew with the cameras. The chap turned out to be from the tourist office in Saint Sorlin d’Arves and immediately made us welcome. He offered to be our tour guide and arranged a 4-wheel-drive vehicle for the crew. We were sliding from a random discovery into an unforgettable adventure.
The starting point of our tour was the famous Col de la Croix de Fer (Pass of the Iron Cross) at 2,068 metres above sea level it is situated between the Massif de Grande Rousses and the Massif d’Arves and should be well known to all passionate cyclists for having featured in the
Tour de France fifteen times.
We started the tour with the camera crew in tow. Our way led us past a crystal-clear mountain lake where the mountain peaks were reflected in the water. Smoothly the Argon FR went along the narrow single trails, up and downhill. The ascents over the scree and big rocky steps were not only exhausting but also technically challenging. Here we would have already lost a derailleur at some rocky sections; one begins to appreciate the advantages of a hub gear. The GATES Carbondrive drive did its job and was good fun to pedal. The feeling of lightness and smoothness is incredible. Smooth is different from soft. A good push in the pedals is transformed into propulsion without the typical “teeth-mesh-with-the-chain-links” noise. Acceleration happens immediately but as smoothly as a tense muscle fibre.
We were now heading towards the peak of OUILLON at 2,431 metres and took a chair-lift to cross the last impassable section of the way. A stunning panoramic view over the mountains was waiting for us at the top. A sharp ridge drew a pattern of light and shadow into the landscape. The way was clear to us, we had to ride along this ridge, our curiosity to explore drew us like a magnet towards it. There was only us and a few flocks of sheep on the mountain. Our trip to the summit ended in a highly technical, challenging downhill single trail, part of the MTB marathon track ‘Transmaurienne’. This three-day marathon goes around the Sybelles mountain range and is considered to be a very challenging race both physically and technically. Our downhill run was accompanied by an approaching
thunderstorm but we did not want to miss any shots of the landscape so we kept on, despite the fear of getting wet before reaching the bottom.
We encountered a herd of cows that were being led to their stables down in the valley, blocking the mountain road to TOUSSUIRE. We fought our way through the congestion of cows and cowpats and started chatting to the farmers who – as expected – questioned us about the Argon FR with GATES Carbondrive. They told us that the milk for the famous cheese ‘Beaufort’ is produced here. Suddenly we felt like cheese fondue and hurried into the village. This was well timed because it started to rain just as we were locking up our bikes and going into the restaurant. While we enjoyed the fondue we’d been craving the heavens opened. We doubted that we would be able to continue our tour the next day.
But the morning brought us sun as we had hoped and we had to tackle a real steep uphill passage. The film crew was now reliant on a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Georges and tour guide David went ahead. The goal was a mountain lake at 2,430 metres at Col Nord of Grand Lac which was still covered in snow.
The ascent was not only steep but also rutted because of the thunderstorm the night before. Rain and water from the melted snow were carving the paths apart. Soon the 4-wheel-drive vehicle could not go any further and the film crew had to join us on the bikes again. The GATES Carbondrive showed once more its appropriateness for long and difficult ascents,
particularly with irregular frequencies of pedalling and varying pedalling pressure. The smooth transformation of force had a pleasant effect on the tense muscles. You could not feel a loss of force. Quite the contrary: The transformation of force corresponded to the building up of strength in the legs and felt like an additional muscle.
When we reached the top, Christian, the rider who had followed us on foot unpacked his mountain picnic. Some pastries and a Savoyanic white wine – nicely chilled, of course. The view over Lac Majeur and Lac Blanc and the Saint Sorlin glacier with its peak L’ETENDARD (3,464 metres) was crystal clear, despite the wine. After crossing some snow fields we went back down to the bottom. This time we took some wider hiking tracks. The Argon FR with a 150mm suspension fork and a matching All Mount geometry lay perfectly on the track and in the blink of an eye we had beaten the altitude of almost 1000 metres back to our starting point.
My thanks for this unforgettable trip go to David MORELON, the tour guide, to Christian DIDIER, the driver of the 4-wheel-drive and to Isabaelle ARBUZ, the manager of the tourist office in the region of Les Sybelles.
With the Argon FR GATES Carbondrive I have found the perfect bike for my mountain tours...and I still have the dream of going around Mount Blanc. Let’s see if we can go up there together in 2011.“
Yours, Georges

ARGON ROAD | CDRoad Racing | Touring

Granted, the Argon Road is quite an unusual road racing bike and it has polarised the road riding community. There are no lugged tubes, no carbon, no filed smooth welds. The Argon Road is a Nicolai and that‘s why it looks like a Nicolai. However we don‘t build this frame out of to look this way for the sake of it, but principally for the pleasure of its function. Therefore, an Argon Road has no need to be shy even when up against the toughest competition. In a competitive test performed by the famous EFBe Institute* the Argon Road was tested against the top models of a dozen well-known road bike manufacturers. The testing engineers certified that the Argon road reached the highest values both in pedal stroke stiffness and tracking of all the tested bikes. This superior stiffness means power saving on long seated sections as well as higher speed through the turns and greater safety on alpine descents.

GATES Carbon DriveARGON ROADTRACK BIKEPROJECT
The end of the season means taking a break from all the races and competitions but in no way does it mean forgetting speed. Thanks to the off-season period we found the time to test our Argon Road Track bike equipped with GATES Carbon Drive System. As Joris Bigoni, our World Cup downhill racer, was using the bike to train in the velodrome during the winter we took the opportunity to follow him with our camera team on his first test ride.We wanted to see how the GATES Carbon Drive works at high speed, high velocity and high load. Where else would you get such an opportunity to test on a high speed track with a fixed gear bike and no brakes?
Evident from the first few laps was how silently the whole system ( 60T to 20T gear ratio) worked during acceleration and max velocity.
The wooden track in the velodrome worked like the corpus of an instrument and the most noticeable noise was the tire noise and the chain friction noise of the other track bikes whilst pedaling. If you draw a relation between noise and friction, you may get an idea how efficient a silent Carbon Drive system works.
Our next test session was on a cycling road around Lake Annecy. This open air course is exclusively made for cyclists which, once gain, allowed us to ride full throttle. The video documentary of the training and test sessions is available on our website or under:http://www.youtube.com/user/WhyexProductions#p/a/u/2/_hNgCEfbT3Y
The velodrome track training continued throughout the winter until the end of march 2010. Under indoor conditions the GATES Carbon Drive system seems to last forever. There was hardly any sign of abrasion either on the belt or on the pulleys after 5 months and around 6000 km of training.

For those of you who have never ridden a BMX bike we can only reccommend that you try it out. There is no bike that compares with regard to acceleration and liveliness. When we started designing our first BMX in 2005, we were clearly focussed on one goal: we wanted to build the best BMX. That is to say, one that had an outstanding stiffness-to-weight ratio and a superior geometry, designed for victory. During the different design stages we received valuable contributions from the two Swiss BMX champions; Roger Rinderknecht and Yvan Lapraz. The Ro20 was built for one sole purpose: to gain a championship title and in 2007 Yvan Lapraz successfully rode to victory on a RO20 to become the BMX world champion. Of course our current 4-X rocket David Graf is also riding a Ro20 when he races BMX and our six-times trials world champion Marco Hösel has also chosen a Ro20 as the basis for his custom 20” competition trials bike.
RO 20 | 24BMX race

CUSTOMMADE
Complete bikes and custom orderYour customer consultants at Nicolai and our dealers and distributors will work with you to plan and realise the build of your Nicolai frame into your personal dream bike. Our long-time dealers and crew members know everything about compatibility, parts, measurements and the special requirements of a Nicolai frame. They've got a broad body of experience in the building of Nicolai custom bikes. You can find list of our licensed dealers at: http://nicolai-testcenter.blogspot.com
How do you order a custom or tailored frame? If you order one of our tailor made frames then the communication about the technical details should always be between the Nicolai engineer in charge and the future rider. Of course you can order and buy a tailored frame at your local licensed dealer, but for all technical aspects and details regarding this order we here at Nicolai are your direct contact.
So after we've got in contact we will first ask you why you think that you need a custom frame at all. Usually the reasons have developed from past experiences with other frames. What bike have you been riding so far? What are the exact measurements of it? What kind of worries and problems did you have with that bike? Backache or aching knees? A stiff neck perhaps? These are the first things that we should discuss.
Next we will ask you some details regarding dimensions: Your body size, inseam, arm-length and your weight. What riding position do you prefer? Do you have any specific requirements?
We will then find out what you are going to use your new bike for: cross country racing, relaxed tours, challenging trails - or maybe freeriding is your thing? What forks are you intending to fit to your bike? What components do you have in mind? We often find that with analysis of the first three points we come to the conclusion that one of our regular
Nicolai frames with carefully chosen components will put things right and custom geometry is not actually required. However, if we come to the conclusion that we can't meet your demands with a standard frame then we will work out a bespoke tailored geometry for you.
Of course it is also possible that you are particularly technically skilled, a professional rider, or just know exactly what geometry or features you require. In that case we will ask you for a technical drawing containing a complete set of geometry data. We will, of course, assess your design for any issues with components that we are aware of and for technical feasibility, and advise you accordingly. However, if the frame is completely you your specification we cannot be held responsible if the final outcome does not work as well as our custom tailored frames.
When we build a tailored frame for you we make a technical drawing containing all geometry details and we will send it to you for your confirmation. You will then have the opportunity to make any final changes or resolve any unanswered questions. We won't start building your frame until you give us the go-ahead and have confirmed your personal tailored geometry.
Independently from agreeing the technical details it is best to place a formal order to set a production slot for your frame so it can be built without too much delay. Technical details and questions can still be resolved during the period between order placement and production date. NICOLAI

ARGON TR | -CDUrban Commuting | Touring

Biking is booming in our towns and more and more people commute daily to work or university seeing a bicycle as a better alternative to a car. Our towns have become much more bike friendly over the last years as city planners build new cycle ways, and other schemes to encourage cycling. There is only one aspect however where a car still leads: as a status symbol. Most city bikes are still seen as cheap, joyless, low-tech tools. The Argon TR changes all this: a genuine thing of beauty designed to bring the joy of biking back to everyday life. The Argon TR is a real Nicolai amongst all the sporty touring and urban bikes! It is of course available with the Gates Carbon Drive.
100%MADE INGERMANY
Production planning and lead times – behind the scenesWith the large number of Nicolai models in the range we group manufacture of the same models for efficiency. On the Nicolai website at www.nicolai.net under “Service/Production Plan” you will find a link to the current production plan showing which model we are planning to manufacture in each week and how many production slots are still available. If it’s the case that the production plan shows no more free slots for the next 8 weeks then that does not always mean that you‘ll then have to wait a long time for a frame. Our licensed dealers and distributors often place pre-orders and carry stock of common frames in an unfinished condition. This means that you can often get a frame in your desired colour and configuration within a few weeks even when the production schedule is fully booked.
Create your personal bike – the Nicolai order generatorOne big advantage of single-unit manufacturing when compared to bulk production is the ability to choose from a broad range of details and options for your Nicolai in order build your a completely customised dream bike. The pages of this catalogue show only one possible option for each frame model.

Mikel Hecken loves the 60s, an era characterised by an unshakeable belief in progress: the first manned space flight, the moon landings, technological rivalry between the superpowers, and Grace Kelly, the style icon of the period. Like many of his generation, he first got into bikes in the late 70s, when the BMX craze hit Europe. Mikel can still remember his first BMX well, and he can also remember that, even as a child, he loved to tinker around with it and fix it up himself. When he inherited an old barn in Remagen, Germany from his Granfather, he converted it into a private workshop and soon filled it with various projects. His first car, a VW 1303 Cabriolet bought for 1000 German marks [ 600 US Dollars], was lovingly restored over the course of four years. Later, Mikel gave an old 911 a second lease of life under the barn’s neon lights, and right now, a NATO army shelter is waiting to get hitched onto a rally truck chassis. Originally, Mikel had wanted to follow his creative and manual impulses and study industrial design, but his father talked him into doing a business degree. After studying in London, he successfully developed and planned CMS systems for 10 years. But for all those years, his original wish to create something tangible was bubbling away under the surface. One day, Mikel went on a long bike ride from Bernau to Biesenthal. Over the course of the trip, the idea of easing the tiring pedaling with an electric drive ripened in his head. The first electric bicycles, which were just coming onto the market at the time, were out of the question as far as Mikel was concerned. They lacked design, quality and performance. After taking the time to think about the electric bike project at greater length, Mikel reached the conclusion that building one from scratch would be beyond his technical abilities. On the lookout for a partner, he finally came across a company
called Nicolai. When he first made inquiries about a custom-built frame, he deliberately left out the fact that it was for an electric bike, just to be on the safe side; he was worried about being branded a nut and not taken seriously. A meeting was arranged and Mikel tentatively let Kalle in on his plan. Kalle had long been aware of the future potential of electric bikes and was enthusiastic about Mikel’s idea. But after some initial designs and a rough calculations, it was soon obvious that an individual construction would involve enormous costs, though these costs would become manageable in a small batch series. Although Mikel had initially planned just a one-off piece for himself, he soon took to the idea of creating his own product and building up a brand. After all, it was exactly what he had been looking for all this time: working creatively, producing something tangible, and a product that was right for him. The working relationship with Kalle stepped up a gear, the blueprints were finalized, the GRACE brand was born and shortly afterwards, construction of the first prototypes began. At the start, Mikel and Kalle had no real idea what the finished bike would look like, despite the 3-D drawings: was it going to sit there like a clumsy elephant or pass muster as a sporty bike? Even when they had the first, generously proportioned frame in their hands, this issue was still unclear. But as the GRACE slowly took shape, their doubts vanished. There it was: elegant and sporty, aggressive and powerful. The design expressed exactly what it was supposed to. The road performance, handling and running all matched. GRACE was successfully unveiled on November 12, 2009, at a ceremony in the Gallery Koal, Berlin. It wasn’t until later that someone noticed it would also have been Grace Kelly’s 80th birthday - an astonishing coincidence.
