Reading Part 3: Plastic Teens(based onClub, Mary Glasgow Magazines, September/October 2005; World and Press Eilers und Schnemann, August 2005.)

Read the text below and the statements on the next page. Decide which of the statements is correct. Put a tick () next to the correct statement on your answer sheet. There is only one correct statement for each number.

Why do an increasing number of teens girls and,

believe it or not, also boys risk their health to go

    under the knife?

It was my dream come true, says Jodie, 19, acook from Brighton, England. Jodie wanted a flat

stomach like her idol Anastasia so badly that shehappily agreed to be a guinea pig for a cosmeticsurgery clinic. She underwent 27 injections of adrug called Lipostabil, which is believed to eataway fat. Afterwards, Jodie was left swollen andbruised. But has the pain made Jodie afraid ofsurgery? No: I am so happy with the result, shesays, and she adds that pain is the price she pays forbeauty. I had my eyebrows tattooed three monthsago. It cost 300 (420) and was agonising. But itdoesnt stop there. Jodie has more on her surgeryshopping list.

Jodies case may be extreme, but she isnt alone.

In a new survey of British teenage girls, 42 per centhave considered plastic surgery. A number of thesegirls, whose average age is 14, have even startedsaving money for surgery. In the U.S., 326,233cosmetic operations were performed on teens in2004, nearly 900 operations a day!

HEARTLESS MEDIASome people say that magazines are the reason whymore and more teenagers have plastic surgery.Chantelle Horton, who used to work as an editor forBliss magazine, agrees that all the perfect-lookingcelebrities make young girls feel self-conscious

about their own normal lumpy bumpy bodies. The problem is that not all of these celebrities reallyhave perfect bodies. It is well known thatmagazines often air brush photos of the rich andfamous to make them seem absolutely perfect totheir readers. More than half of the British girlswho were interviewed by Bliss were worried theywould never look like their female role models. Buthow could they?

And TV programmes such as I Want a FamousFace and Plastic Surgery Live only make thingsworse. Ron Rohrich, president of the AmericanSociety of Plastic Surgeons, criticises that these

shows make insecure teens believe that they canhave the perfect body through surgery.

PEER POWERThe media has also influenced the picture someboys have of their ideal girl. Girls feel pressurefrom boys who expect their girlfriends to resemblethe perfect celebrity-body model, says ChantelleHorton. Jodie also claims that boys have made funof her body, which made her very insecure. She

sees surgery as a way to help her feel better aboutherself. Dr Rohrich warns, To believe that surgerycan change who you are only leads todisappointment.

NOT JUST FOR GIRLSHow long will it be before teenage boys start to seecosmetic surgery as a way to feel better aboutthemselves, just like Jodie does? A survey of 2000teenage boys by Sneak magazine shows that theyworry about their bodies as much as teenage girlsdo and wish they had David Beckhams six-pack orBrad Pitts smile.

Just 13 per cent are happy with their bodies, while26 per cent say that they would think aboutcosmetic surgery.

The survey shows that young boys are worriedabout impressing girls. It also shows that those boyswho feel good about their bodies feel good aboutthemselves.

Around 84 per cent believe that a better bodywould make their life better. They say that pressurefrom girls (42 per cent), celebrity pictures (28 percent) and comments from other boys (24 per cent)have made them lose their self-confidence. Thesurvey also says that more and more boys are

buying beauty products because they are takingmore interest in their looks.Pat Spungin, the founder of www.raisingkids.co.uk,a website for parents, says that in the past boys didnot worry so much about their looks. But becauseof football stars such as David Beckham, thingshave changed. In the past he would have been lovedfor his talent. Now it is not enough just to be anexcellent footballer. You have to be an excellentand good-looking footballer.
