    HEALTH & LIVING

Top Chef Cook and School MealsJamie Oliver the top TV cook wants to change the eating habits of Britains kids

Popular television chef Jamie Oliver togetherwith a group of school children

School dinners are a traditional part of many Britishschools. For a long time these meals have offeredcooked food to children who cant get home atlunchtime. But in recent years the quality of schooldinners has been heavily criticised. And, in manycases, this criticism has been right. Because manyschools dont have enough money, they need tosave wherever they can. And many of those schoolshave decided that one place where they can savemoney is on the amount they spend on the mealsthey serve in the school cafeteria at lunchtime. Andthat saving has resulted in poor and unhealthy food. But now top TV chef Jamie Oliver has been tryingto improve school dinners and get youngsters to eatbetter and healthier food. And hes turned hiscampaign into his latest food show called JamiesSchool Dinners. The show is a series ofprogrammes which follow his efforts to change

school meals. For Jamie, the first task is to get rid of processedfast food, which is usually full of chemicaladditives. Instead, Jamie has replaced the junk withdelicious, healthy food, prepared from freshproducts.Of course, Jamies plan has its critics. Some schooldinner ladies the women who stand in thecafeteria and serve the food say it cant be done.In their opinion, children dont even want to tryanything green. But the harder the task, the moredetermined Oliver becomes. He meets thepoliticians, he talks with the cooks, and he chats

with the children. And for what? To set highstandards for healthy, delicious food in schools.

What Jamie Oliver knows and what manychildren do not understand is that when they eatunhealthy food, they set out on a path that will take

them towards ill health. And this ill health can leadto obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. What kids get fed at school should be our mostimportant jobif we are to stop the shockinghealthproblems of kids in this country, says Oliver. Ivebeen working as a dinner lady for my documentary, and Ive seen how important it is to get rid of theprocessed food thats become the staple Britishschool dinner.Ruth Kelly, the head of the Ministry of Education, says that new health guidelines for processed foods(for example, beef burgers, sausages and cakes)will be introduced in schools in England. This is to

reduce their fat, salt, and sugar content. And in2006 the government will introduce stricterstandards for school meals.Ms Kelly has called on the food industry to workwith the government. She wants the industry to helpthe government to support and give advice toschools and parents in order to improve thestandard of school meals. And she added: I wantparents to become more involved in schools, notonly in the quality of education, but in everythingthat their child experiences within the school gates including what they eat.Jamie Olivers new series, Jamies School

Dinners, aims to re-educate children all over theUK to love fresh food, and to stay healthy in theyears to come. But to encourage them to eat saladsinstead of sausages is proving to be his mostdifficult challenge yet! Its been tough. Not easy atall, says the 29-year-old TV star, who has met a lotof kids with unhealthy eating habits. [They] dontknow what a potato looks like. They eat chips everyday! This is normal, not abnormal. The things thatIve learned to be normal this last year areshocking, he said.

Jamie Oliver started by taking over school dinners

in one London school, and is now overseeing mealsin 25, with more joining all the time. And thatscertainly a step in the right direction!
