Was man
In vielen Bereichen unseres täglichen
Ausdrucksformen. Vom Fisch in Formaldehyd, vom übergroßen
Was man kann
32. Taxi, 2008
Marcela Böhm surprised me with the title chosen for this book.
Our conversation reveals that she sees “Was man kann” (liter-
ally: “What one can do”) as an invitation to us to ask ourselves
what we would do, what choices we make. The theme of her
paintings could be an impulse as well.
One can get an impression of the infinite variety of art
by visiting the important international art fairs, galleries and
museum, or by lecture and literature. To a certain extent, our
personal freedom is restricted in many areas of our daily lives.
Yet in art freedom has no boundaries. Artists have the right and
the freedom to express themselves as they wish.
We might be confused by the variety and extent of art,
ranging from a fish preserved in formaldehyde through ultra-
large candy-colored dachshunds, a single electrical bulb sus-
pended from a ceiling, a vacuum cleaner in a glass case to nailed
objects, through endless-loop videos through objects, paintings,
drawing and photography and more. Art a supermarket?

3. Mädchen mit Flügeln, 2008
Der Betrachter hat gleiche Freiheiten: Begeisterung,
Ablehnung, Enttäuschung oder Unverständnis. Man kann sich
entscheiden. Genauso wie der Künstler auch.
In entwaffnender Offenheit sagt mir Marcela Böhm: ›Ab-
dige Welt.
Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Freude beim Betrachten und Lesen
dieses Buches Was man kann. Marcela würde sich freuen, Ihnen
Anregungen und Nachdenkliches vermittelt zu haben.
Just like the artist, the viewer has the freedom: enthusiasm,
rejection, disappointment, or incomprehension. One has a
choice.
In disarming frankness Marcela told me: “In abstraction I am
hopeless.” On one hand I don’t quite believe in it, in the other I
don’t miss it at all in her work of fine arts. Marcela’s world is that
of people. The baby, the child, the old and the young, families,
the lonely and the lovers, their sleep and awaking, what they
do, on vacation, in large cities and at home, clearly containing
social-critical elements.
Her picture titles often challenge to be questioned. After all,
do pictures still have to be titled? Well, this is Marcela’s freedom
and her way to communicate something that goes beyond the
figurative visual. Why the title Peace and War (No. 61) for the
painting showing a young woman sitting on a sofa in front of the
family picture on the wall? Find your own answer yourself.
A particular treasure are Marcela’s sketch books as they
reveal her astute observation of people, for instance the little girl
at the table drawing a picture. The expression on her face is con-
centrated and serous. She has fun with the swimmies she is still
wearing. And in front of her the result of her childlike efforts — a
color pencil painting. What a wonderful innocent world.
I hope you will enjoy looking at these pictures and read-
ing the comments of “Was man kann”. Marcela would be very
happy if her work entices you to ponder her way of looking at
the world.

Der Ausschnitt wirkt vertraut. Das aufblasbare Plastik-
planschbecken als letzte Zuflucht und grandioses Ereignis
langer Sommer. Draußen flirrende Hitze, drinnen lauwar-
mes Wasser – Inbegriff von Sommersehnsucht, bevor wir
das Meer kannten.
Die kollektive Kindheitserinnerung ist gleichwohl das
Einzige, was in Marcela Böhms Der kleine Unterschied
The section seems familiar: the inflatable plastic pool as the
last retreat and the grandiose event of long summers. Out-
side smoldering heat, inside tepid water — the epitome of
summer yearning before we knew the ocean.
The collective childhood memory is about the only thing
that seems familiar in Marcela Böhm’s painting The Small
Difference (2007, No. 6) that could communicate homi-
ness. Already the picture section imperceptibly crops its
motif, moving it into the viewer’s focus. The two children
standing in the shallow water remain oddly strange. Their
facial expressions are lost in fleeing profile or concealed
by shade. Even the small difference remains decently hid-
den. Although the girl’s white behind causes brief irrita-
tion, we don’t really understand what the boy holds in his
hand. The scenery remains innocuous — and is at the same
time vexingly strange. That the master for this painting is
a photograph of a family celebration of Turkish neighbors,
indicating that the title refers to cultural differences rather
than those between boys and girls, changes little. The track
has been set, the chain of associations becomes rather more
complex.6.

näherer Betrachtung in diesen Bildern zusammen. Was wir
mer, farblich neutraler Fond definiert. Was hier oder in Der
examination nothing in these images fits together. What we
see is a compendium of diverging realities conjuring only
accidentally to a picture.
What we see in The Small Difference and in other pic-
tures by Marcela Böhm has the irrational logic of a dream.
That we together with the painter are left between dream
and nightmare establishes the quality of her painting. The
familiar becomes alien and treacherous, the everyday turns
unfamiliar and threatening. It is precisely this moment
of being without place, the partial absence of space and
perspective that becomes so immensely disconcerting in
paintings like The Train (2008, No. 52) or Alice in the Land
(2009, No. 7). Areas of highly spatial and physical con-
centration dissolve and tilt into the image’s surface that is
defined as a monochrome, color-neutral background. What
here or in The Small Difference is read as background then
falls entirely out of the figurative system of painting. Time
and again, painting, gesture, and color defy representation,
rebelling against the image, testing its fragile balance.
In The Ritual (2009, No. 28), the ritualized embrace of
two people looses its everyday intimacy not only through
the already described base that negates space and perspec-
tive but especially by means of peinture that wildly invades
the image and the bodies. The normality of the act between
two people is brutally counteracted by a piece of paint-
ing that imposes its painterly attitude ostentatiously: The
man’s arm that touches the woman’s shoulder dissolves — in
painting, in gestural color-fields, in rudimentary outlines,
and coloristic ‘non finito’. It is terrifying and at the same
keit in seiner Umgebung umso bestürzender.
In feinen Lineamenten löst
unserer Kindheitserinnerungen entgleitet uns.
unserer Erinnerungen. Vor allem der aufwändig gemalte
Boden des Beckens gewinnt eine beunruhigende Dynamik,
An idyllic scene of two children standing in a pool that
increasingly defying interpretation. The painterly moves
before the idyllic scene, depriving it of both base and space.
Does the pool still have a three-dimensional presence and
is clearly defined, is any depth perception still trustworthy
beyond its plastic walls? It is precisely this almost classical
perspective that makes the emptiness and fragility of the
pool’s surrounding appear even more disturbing. The rudi-
mentary but consistent figurativeness orchestrated around
the two children tilts suddenly into the surface in the right
corner of the image when the systematically set colorful
seams and stripes of the children’s pool suddenly turn into
vertical drippings — pure and autonomous painterly deci-
sions that almost ‘debase’ the picture’s figurative structure.
Upon closer examination, the girl’s delicate nude body dis-
solves, here banishing the nude into the surface as well. In
fine lineaments the color separates itself from the object,
hair is transformed into autonomous color gradients.
Thus the initial discomfort with the familiar-uncanny
situation becomes at first and more clearly accessible on
the painterly level. The image, the situation of our childhood
memories eludes us. The scenery becomes treacherous,
abandons the familiar space. The pool wavers in the picture
without a place, vanishing eventually even in the flow of
our memories. Especially the intricately painted bottom of
the pool takes on an alarming dynamic, becomes the actual
center of the painting. Its pattern, the color of the water and
the rather gestural schlieren on its surface that overlay each
other, create a space of painterly autonomy that at the same
time debases the figurative world of its place. On closer

These pictures communicate that what we know, see,
remember, and dream for, always seems to be on the verge
of the abyss of abstraction. Read this way, Marcela Böhm’s
painting in its beauty as well as its abrupt, occasionally bru-
tal disruption is a continuous battle for security, for pictures
through which we can confirm our history and our self.
Dr. Martin Engler
8. Die Lebensaufgabe, 2005
time horribly beautiful, it is painting, invention as the entire
picture — and it is also entrance of the uncanny in the world
of images and fiction.
The Soloist (2007, No. 32) struggling for space in front
of the flower pattern, the Big Neighbor (2009, No. 68) who
almost vanishes into the monochrome house wall, or the
woman in The Life-task (2005, No. 8) who gets ready are
significant examples for the functioning of Marcela Böhm’s
pictures. Everyday life and alienation, the familiar and the
unknown, dream and nightmare find their expression in
painting by means of this fascinating and always newly
executed polarity between the figurative and abstraction.
Threateningly, the painting seems to embrace people, our
memory, and the reality of these paintings. Like a painterly
‘horror vacui’ the repeating pattern gains control over the
subject.

Die Figuren sind gesetzt. Der König und die Dame, flankiert
von ihren Heerführern, warten auf den Einsatz. Noch ist
nichts passiert.
Beteiligten ins Gesicht geschrieben.
The pieces are set. The king and the queen, flanked by the
knights, rooks, bishops, and pawns, anticipate deployment.
Nothing has happened yet. But the first moves decide the
entire course of the game.
Perhaps Marcela Böhm had the chess game in mind
when she titled her painting The Opening (2007, No. 24)
and not The Exhibition Opening. Although no exhibits are
visible in the painting the context is clear. The actors are
well known: the gallery owner, the artist, the collector, the
critic, the sophisticated citizen, the dandy, the scrounger,
they have come together in this ideal vernissage gathering.
Böhm stages the group like on a theater stage, like some
social event in a play, shortly before something spectacu-
lar is going to happen, finally happening, for the routine
is inscribed in the participants’ faces. The protagonists of
the exhibition opening and their drinks are moved into the
foreground, everything else such as the gallery space and
even the art works are drowned out in white. The vernissage
is still only lowly attended, and with a swiping glance the
gallery owner is assessing the regrets and what may not be
sold this evening …

of the options: she is bored with unambiguousness. Her
astute power of observation unravels the moment that con-
tains the greatest range of interpretation.
Everything is open, but after five, six moves it will
become clear where the game is headed.

Marcela Böhm chose an early moment of the exhibi-
tion opening, before it is in full operation. The introduction
speech has not yet started. The moment is imbued with
ambiguity and a thousand possibilities. Loss or gain of the
exhibition are still pendant. Despite its Prosecco mood this
painting does not radiate celebration but rather anticipation
and exertion, doing justice to the significance of the event.
For only with the exhibition opening the artist leaves the
protective space of the studio, presenting him/herself with
his/her work to the public. And the gallery owner does not
want to disappoint his/her regular audience’s expectations.
For the exhibition opening is the event during which the
combined efforts of the artist and the gallery owner were
focused on for months and years. It is the event where it
will become clear whether the staging was artistically and
socially successful and whether the party is rewarded with
profit.
These are questions the artist as a rule does not
confront. It is Marcela Böhm’s particular quality to focus
the attention on precisely this fragile situation of the ini-
tial moment of the event. In her paintings she invariably
addresses the ambiguity of the situation and the multiplicity

rosafarbenen Bad. Wir sehen weder eine schöne Frau noch
eine schöne Umgebung noch eine schöne Situation. Viele
scheinbare Nebensächlichkeiten unseres Alltagslebens erfah-
ren in Böhms Arbeiten eine Aufwertung. Das Badezimmer

A City Like Its People (2006, No. 10), not just a beautiful
title, it could also stand for Marcela Böhm’s œuvre. The artist
focuses in on both the city and its citizens, and paints them
with courage and a certain chutzpa — the citizens of her
home town Buenos Aires and her new home Cologne. It is
hard to defy the charm of her pictures.
Courage describing an artist who includes so many flow-
ers and decorative elements in her painting, whose images
are ostensibly playful and rather light? This apparent light-
ness vanishes upon closer inspection, giving way to the other
side of our lives: the loneliness, the exhaustion, the fatigue,
and the broad spectrum of triste situations of our daily lives.
Paula’s Bathroom (2003, No. 59) shows a woman who
brushes her teeth and looks out from a bathroom mirror into
a flesh-colored, pink bathroom. We neither see a beautiful
woman, nor a beautiful environment, nor a beautiful situa-
tion. Many seemingly minor matters of our everyday lives are
being enhanced in Böhm’s works. The bathroom for instance
would be such a marginal place in our daily life. At the same
time, it is the place where we live out our routines and inces-

Lebens. Ihre gezeichneten Skizzen, Fotografien, häufig
Schnappschüsse von Familienszenen oder Freunden, bilden
das Ausgangsmaterial für die Komposition ihrer Arbeiten. So
sant attitudes. And in no other place do we meet ourselves
as often in the mirror as there. An identity-forming activity
like looking into the mirror falls into oblivion in this place
and through the routine. And yet, the numerous facets of
the mirrors surface could communicate to us what our lives
really look like. Upon approaching the painting, the viewer
stands in the place where the woman in the mirror would
stand. Thus the woman in the mirror becomes the proxy of
our daily existence.
Such images pervade Marcela Böhm’s entire work.
She finds her motifs in everyday scenes of urban life. Her
sketched drawings, photographs, numerous snapshots of
family scenes or friends are the basic material for the com-
position of her work. Thus she captures the small gestures of
people and the random arrangements of things in order to
let them resurface in a new form in her paintings.
In Hand-painted (2009, No. 60) we see another bath-
room. The picture title points to the particularity of the
central subject of the image, the flower ornament. The tiles
in this painting have not been manufactured industrially,

they have been hand-crafted. By repeating the painted tiles
the viewer’s eye is led through the picture into a bathroom
that originates from another time. Whenever the decor
becomes the subject in her paintings, Marcela Böhm assigns
it the function of grounding the presented scenes in a social
context. In her painting Peace and War (2007, No. 61) the
artist uses various decorative elements in order to illustrate
the contrast between a bourgeois, conservative environment
and the image of a young woman. Decorative elements are
found on the wallpaper as well as on the lace-application on
the picture frame and the plate on the table — decor that we
attribute to a certain bourgeois everyday context which con-
tradicts the young woman’s black fingernails and transparent
blouse. Technically this contradiction is further highlighted
by the fact that the wallpaper and the picture frame are not
painted but collaged into the painting, introducing ‘foreign
elements’ into a painting where initially the motif of the
young woman appeared as ‘foreign’ in the environment. In
this work the decor takes on topical relevance.
Then again, sometimes the decor is merely an element
of composition in Marcela Böhm’s paintings. In The Role
(2007, No. 62) decorative surfaces constitute the center as
well as the background of the image. The decorative back-
94 95
on.
ground replaces the real background which might have been
a wall with a window and plants. Thus the presented scene
is focussed on the woman at the head of the table. Further-
more the background decor transforms the depth perspec-
tive into the two-dimensional plane. The table-cloth con-
stitutes a second decorative element. While Marcela Böhm
presents the people graphically in an almost comic-like style,
the table-cloth becomes the painterly foundation of the
painting, forming the ‘lively’ counterpoint to the decorative
background. This is also a good example for the dissolution
of the contrast between the figurative and the decorative in
a picture. In this scene the decorative function of the table-
cloth is mimicked. Through the ornamental background the
artist enriches the scene through an additional decorative
element. The example of the use of ornament shows in
which exciting ways Marcela Böhm negates conventional
pictorial language, transforming it into an expression of her
own.
In recent years, Marcela Böhm’s work has undergone
change. The patterns which she used to derive from the inte-
rior design like wallpapers and table-cloths she now finds
in architecture. A higher degree of abstraction is required to
discover the patterns in our contemporary cities. Perhaps it

Marcela Böhm approaches the answer to the question
why we are as we are as the chronicler of daily life. In this
context the numerous self-portraits found throughout her
work are indicative. The artist likes to excuse herself by say-
ing that she is readily available as a model which saves her
the pain to go out in search for other motifs. And she keeps
maintaining that a picture is just a picture. And that it is not
relevant whether she is represented in the picture as she is.
Thus her self-portrait becomes a proxy, each one of us could
be in her place. Marcela Böhm not only allows the viewer
access to how she sees the world but also to herself. ‘Se es lo
que se es’: You are what you are!

is an expression of her artistic maturing and the premise to
deepen her theme — the human being in our time. While in
her earlier works a single attitude or gesture predominated,
the protagonists in her recent works relate to their urban
environment.
Like for instance in the Stream of Money (2008, No.
63). A young woman is crouched down on her bed in a dark
room. She looks out of the window onto an urban cityscape.
The façades are brightly illuminated, but the sky is gray. The
high-rises are sometimes gray, sometimes colorful, but no
human being is to be seen. We also don’t see any plant or
animal or other signs of life in the city. Where do we find
hope? With longing the young woman looks towards the
river, seeing the brown water-mass of the Rio de la Plata, the
Stream of Money.
The abstracted architecture forms a projection surface
for our emotional world just as for the isolated woman. Gray
concrete façades, gray asphalt provide the basic tint in all
contemporary cities. Does it make a difference whether we
live in Cologne or in Buenos Aires?
