3From the Director

SUSAN P. ISON

Like many others, when I travel I look for museums and performing art theaters. On a recent trip to Amsterdam I visited the internationally-known Van Gogh Museum and the smaller Verzetsmuseum about the Dutch resistance during World War II. They were very different, but equally engaging. The cultural facilities found around the globe tell stories about their communities. I have many wonderful memories from past travels.

I believe the same is true for many of our visitors. They sometimes generously express their gratitude for an exhibit or a performance. And, they come from many places. In April we installed a kiosk at the front desk of the Museum, asking visitors several questions, including where they are from. The following chart shows the results for April-June, with visitors from 29 states (coast to coast), Japan and England.

The Rialto collects data through on-line ticket purchases. The following chart represents the first 6 months in 2017. Nearly half of our ticket purchasers are from Loveland; the next largest group is Fort Collins. The remainder represent 68 Colorado cities and 19 states.

Lastly, I’d like to share a tidbit from our comment box at the Museum left during the Blow Up exhibit:

Never has hot air been so cool!

The exhibit ends August 20th if you haven’t had a chance to see it!

Picasso’s portraits of friends and family uncover the creative process as he moved between drawing from life and depicting caricatures, while employing his genius as a draughtsman through his quintessential expressive use of line. While the human face has a myriad of expressions and viewpoints, Picasso reduced the difficulty of depicting this complexity while simultaneously creating portraits with such emotional intensity they may be consecutively perceived as both highly personal statements and through the lens of a viewer’s own experience. It is interesting to note that in many of his portraits, the object is often depicted as a solitary figure—distanced, yet intimate in its detailed tenderness. This exhibition of 35 prints is an exploration not only of Picasso’s mastery of a wide variety of print media, but a continuation of a question posed by the artist himself, “Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face, or what’s behind it?”

A prolific and tireless innovator of art forms, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) influenced the course of 20th-century art with unparalleled magnitude. Inspired by African and Iberian art and developments in the world around him, Picasso contributed significantly to a number of artistic movements, notably Cubism, Surrealism, Neoclassicism, and Expressionism. Along with Georges Braque, Picasso is recognized for pioneering Cubism in an attempt to reconcile three-dimensional space with the two-dimensional picture plane.

POSING FOR PICASSO

TOUCHED BY THE HANDS OF GOD:MICHELANGELO’S MODELS

The unfolding drama of Pablo Picasso’s life often made its way into his compositions, and at times, directed his artistic experimentation. Throughout his work, the artist engaged with important archetypes from literature, music, theater, fashion, and popular culture, as well as history and art. His close relationships with many of his subjects—Picasso famously chose models that had personal relevance— allowed the artist to distill their energy and infuse it into works of art. This exhibition presents a series of prints that reveal the depth of these relationships, the extent to which these models participated in the artistic narrative, and the autobiographical potential of “the studio” as a persistent subject. Artwork in this exhibition is loaned courtesy of Spaightwood Galleries, Upton, Massachusetts; and a private collection.

The exhibit Touched by the Hands of God: Michelangelo’s Models features bronze casts of six of Michelangelo’s bozzetti, small sculptural models made of clay, wax and wood. These models are part of the renowned collection of the Museo Casa Buonarrotti in Florence, Italy, which commissioned the bronzes in cooperation with the Harry and Karly Spell Foundation. Through cutting edge technology supported by Eiger Labs, molds were produced without touching the precious bozzetti using laser scanning and rapid prototyping and were cast at the foundry of Art Casting of Illinois, Inc. While little attention has been devoted to his models, the pieces in this exhibit provide crucial insights into the complex technical methods and aesthetic concepts followed by Michelangelo in executing such monumental carved works as the David and the Captive Slaves.

In this exhibition, Yuki Horikawa melds his mastery of the medium of pastel with the sensitivity of figural representation, resulting in a subtle yet finely wrought narrative evident within each unique portrait. The people in this series communicate with the viewer through subtle differences – a turn of the head, the pose of the hands, or the use of eye contact. These artistic choices are as responsible for assigning meaning as the use of highlighting, pattern, shadow or color. Horikawa carefully doles out enough information so as to develop a relationship with the subject, while portraying universal themes of sadness, hopefulness, or confrontation that give life to his subjects and an active role for the viewer.

“I've found that pastel has a unique appeal. The medium's need for the constant layering of color reveals complexities in the complexion of a person's face as well as the numerous hues a piece of fabric might possess. It is a traditional medium, but extremely gratifying and often in the right hands a modern one.”

Born in Yokosuka, Japan, Yuki Horikawa has an extensive career as an Artist and Graphic Designer. He has worked on several projects for prestigious companies such as Cartier, Noble Surf, Mc Calls Pattern, among others. He has produced illustrations for fashion designer Egon Von Furstenberg, and for Carole Jackson’s “Color Me Beautiful” series of books, and has worked as a fashion illustrator.

Armando Silva uses his artistic platform to pursue his passion and purpose - believing in a responsibility

within his community to lead, educate and give back. He paints his portraits to tell stories while in

his studio or on stage in front of thousands. As a creative, I look for opportunities to present my artwork in order to paint a bigger picture. My

intuition is to find the greens in a red rose and the blues in an orange. Every brush stroke has a rhythm

and every color has its voice. ~ Armando SilvaBorn in Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Mexico, Silva

moved with his family to Northern Colorado when he was just five. Quickly becoming familiar with

pop culture in America, he submerged himself in the visual and performing arts behind closed doors, later going on to earn his B.A. in Fine Arts from the

University of Northern Colorado.

An exhibition that integrates the history of the Colorado Big Thompson Project Map with an artistic interpretation. This map shows the transition of water from the western slope to the Front Range by way of the Alva B. Adams tunnel. The Colorado Big Thompson Project utilizes 35 miles of tunnels to transport water to farm and ranch land as well as 925,000 people in portions of eight northern Colorado counties.TunnelVision will include historic photographs and other ephemera from that construction effort along with an art installation that explores the actual or metaphoric concept of tunnels and their relationship to the movement of water. With artwork by Megan Gafford that demonstrates “humanity’s impressive ability to figure out how to achieve the difficult task of moving water,” visitors will learn about this 1930s era project that drove development on the Front Range, while artistically experiencing the forces of gravity used to move water.Gafford received her MFA from CU Boulder in 2016 and her BA from the University of New Orleans in 2011. Her work has been exhibited at David B Smith Gallery in Denver, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Backyard Ballroom in New Orleans. She is an artist-in-residence at RedLine Contemporary Art Center, Denver, Colorado.

HUNG LIU:TRANSFORMATION

The exhibition Hung Liu: Transformation is the first major Colorado exhibition of the artwork of Hung Liu—one of the most prominent Chinese painters working in the United States today. Featuring 15 large-scale paintings, as

well as a rarely seen, room-size installation, the exhibition celebrates the persistent theme in Hung Liu’s artwork of movement and migration, at both pragmatic and metaphoric levels. Liu's career accomplishments include

work completed in China before the artist arrived in the U.S. This body of work emphasizes a symbiotic, fluid relationship with the past and a deeply poignant understanding of the persistence of time. The exhibition explores

the evolution of Liu's artistic practice and investigates the complex interactions between individual memory and history. Included in the exhibition are two recent paintings from a 2016 series that were the result of Liu’s long

affiliation and affection for the photographs of Dorothea Lange.Born in Changchun, China, in 1948, a year before the creation of the People's Republic of China, Liu lived

through Maoist China and experienced the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Trained as a social realist painter and muralist, she came to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of California, San

Diego, where she received her MFA. One of the first people from mainland China to study abroad and pursue an art career, she moved to northern California to become a faculty member at Mills College in 1990, and has

continued to live and work in the Bay Area. She has exhibited internationally at premier museums and galleries, and her work resides in prestigious private and institutional collections around the world. Hung Liu currently lives

in Oakland and is a tenured professor in the Art Department at Mills College.
