On the move......by bus and rail in Freiburg and the region.

See city map: circular path, marked in red

Starting at the Tourist Information Centre 1 (see map) we step out onto the Town Hall Square which is bordered by the Old and the New Town Hall 2 and St. Martin’s Church 3 . The church was built as part of the Franciscan Monastery in around 1300. Walking down Franziskanergasse we pass Haus zum Walfisch 4 (House of the Whale) with its magnificent late gothic bay window. This was once the home of Erasmus of Rotterdam. You will now arrive on Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse, Freiburg’s attractive high street where the Basler Hof (Regional Council Building) 5 is located. Turning into Münster-strasse takes us through to Münsterplatz (Cathedral Square), the bustling centre of the Old Town. On the south side of the square you can see the characteristic red façade of the Historisches Kaufhaus (Historic Merchants’ Hall) 9 , the customs, trade and commercial ex-change dating back to the 16th century. Standing under the arcades of the Historisches Kaufhaus offers the best view of the Münster, the gothic Cathedral which took 300 years to build. Other important buildings can also be found in the vicinity: the Archbishop’s Palais 10 and Wentzinger House, home to the Municipal History Museum 11 . Now follow Herrenstrasse, Münzgasse and Konviktstrasse 17

, the latter a prime example of careful renovation in the Old Town, which will lead you to the Schwabentor 18 , one of the city gates. Passing Germany’s oldest inn, “Zum Roten Bären”, we continue on to Augustinerplatz (Augustiner Square). The former Monastery of the Augustinian Hermits located here now contains the Augustiner Museum 21 . Just a short walk on you will find yourself in the pic-turesque Schneckenvorstadt (snails’ suburbs), which used to be the tanners’ (Gerberau) and the fishers’ (Fischerau) quarter 25 . Follow-ing the canal takes us to Martinstor, another city gate. On through Martinstor 26 we then turn left down Bertoldstrasse towards the Old University 28 and the University Campus 30 . Now cross the Platz der Alten Synagoge (Old Synagogue Square) and continue past the theatre 35 and Schwarzes Kloster (Black Monastery) 36 to the Colombischlössle (Colombi Palais) 37 , which is situated at the centre of Colombi Park. Turning into Turmstrasse takes us past the Gerichtslaube (Old Court House) 39 and back to our starting point, the Old Town Hall.
