Formal-erschließung
Was ist Formalerschließung - wozu Formalerschließung ?
Formalerschließung erstellt Beschreibungen – sog. bibliografische Beschreibungen – von Dokumenten. Damit sollen Textdokumente möglichst eindeutig identifiziert werden können. Die Elemente der Beschreibung wurden und werden in Katalogen, Bibliografien oder Datenbanken für die Suche und das Finden der Dokumente benutzt.
Für die Elemente der Beschreibung benutzt man vorrangig die Daten, mit denen man üblicherweise Dokumente, insbesondere Bücher identifiziert bzw. nach ihnen sucht. In erster Linie sind dies:
• Verfasser• Sachtitel• Erscheinungsjahr• . . .
Darüberhinaus gibt es Zusammenhänge zwischen Dokumenten, die ebenfalls Gegenstand einer Beschreibung werden können, um verschiedene Such- und Findeinteressen zu bedienen.

Die Aufgaben bestehen darin, ein Dokument – ein Werk – anhand seiner formalen Merkmale so zu beschreiben, dass
- es möglichst zweifelsfrei und eindeutig identifiziert werden kann
- Suchvorgänge nach dem Werk mit Hilfe der formalen Merkmale möglichst gut unterstützt werden

Noch mehr für die bibliographische Beschreibung zu berück-sichtigende Dokumenttypen ergeben sich, wenn man sog. biblio-graphische Verknüpfungen zwischen den bisher vorgestellten Typen betrachtet. Im Unterschied zu den bisherigen Typen, die als materielle bibliographische Objekte angesehen werden können, haben diese neuen Typen keine eigene physische Materialität, es handelt sich vielmehr in gewisser Weise um virtuelle bibliographische Objekte.Die wichtigsten Vertreter für solche Objekte sind:

In der realen bibliografischen Praxis erfolgt die Erfassung und Speicherung bibliografischer Daten mit Hilfe sog. Datenformate und Datenmodelle.
Unsere Vorgehensweise mit der Software MIDOS bietet hierfür eine vereinfachte Vorstellung.
Reale Datenmodelle und –formate können um ein Vielfaches komplexer sein, je nachdem, welche der zuvor erwähnten Aufgabenstellungen bedient werden und welche Werkzeuge eingesetzt werden sollen.
Für die Datenmodellierung kommen flache Strukturen (z. B. MIDOS) oder relationale Strukturen in Frage (vgl. Kapitel 4).
Zusammenhänge und Beziehungen werden im ersten Fall durch feldspezifische Indizes und Verlinkungen, im zweiten Fall durch relationale Modellierung abgebildet.

Metadaten beschreiben wie Daten der bibliografischen Beschreibung Eigenschaften von Objekten (Büchern, Aufsätzen, anderen Medien, Web-Seiten).
Bibliografische Daten in Datenformaten liegen getrennt und unabhängig vom Dokument vor, auch dann, wenn die Dokumente selbst Objekte der Datenbank sind.
Metadaten von elektronischen Dokumenten liegen als integrierter Bestandteil des Dokuments vor (vgl. HTML-Struktur einer Web-Seite)
Bibliografische Daten werden üblicherweise nicht von den Urhebern des Dokuments selbst erstellt, sondern z.B. im Rahmen der Formalerschließung.
Anders als bei bibliographischen Daten betrachtet man es bei Metadaten als selbstverständlich, dass sie nicht von den Urhebern erstellt werden. Für den Prozess der Erstellung werden daher häufig diverse Hilfsmittel (Eingabeformulare) angeboten.
Es treten dabei jedoch vielfältige Probleme im Bereich Regeln und Normierung auf.
