These forty plates as a whole make up an unusually reasonable and useful course in blackboard drawing. Being in separated plates as they are, instead of bound in book form, they are much more easily used for copying, or for distribu- tion in class use.

The first plates give the simple ex- ercises necessary to the correct and rapidly effective use of the chalk. These are followed by the drawing of objects, using these various exercises in the technique of their representation. Some of these drawings are in outline, and some in mass, according to the demand made by the nature of the object.

The birds, animals, figures and trees

are done in a simple, free, direct way, showing essentials rather than details, -a method desirable in all blackboard drawing, and necessary in rapid work.

In this series a sufficient amount of perspective is introduced to enable one to draw the objects, buildings, streets and roads required in groups and scenes.

Color appeals so strongly to children that it is a great addition to blackboard drawing, and effective use is made of it in the latter part of the course. It is very attractively added to the birds, figures, animals, plants and scenes, and in a very simple way.

The entire course is well arranged, the steps from one problem to another being well graded.

The value of such blackboard illustra- tion to teachers, especially to teachers of language, cannot be overestimated. Next to the immediate presence of the thing under discussion is the picture of it, and the range of pictures that may be executed on the blackboard is un- limited.

There is a variety of scenes among these plates, giving practice in the es- sentials to such an extent that any rea- sonable illustration in scenes could be made by one who had mastered these plates. Seasons of the year's occupa- tions, and the activities of life are touched upon, animals and figures are introduced, and the interest of any child well considered. Pictures often are intelligible where language fails.
