FRANK FARIANFrank bought his first guitar at the age of 12 and in 1955 he discovered rock´n roll. In the 60‘s he started his first band and covered songs by artists such as Otis Redding and The Drifters.

In 1975 he put together a band fronted by a black dancer and three singers, called Boney M. The band had their first hit-single with “Daddy Cool” and went on to have 38 top ten hits between 1975 and 1988. This included 15 number ones in Germany and 22 top tens in England, including five number ones. Three Boney M. singles now grace the Top 10 all-times bestseller list in England: “Mary´s Boy Child”, “Rivers Of Babylon” and “Brown Girl In The Ring”. Boney M. became the first Western group to perform in the Communist Soviet Union. They played a set to 2,700 people in Red Square.

In 1982 Frank built “Studio Rosbach“, pioneer in the use of digital technology, in which he pro-duced the internationally renowned million seller hits of Milli Vanilli, La Bouche and No Mercy. In 1984 Stevie Won-der visited the studio to produce his No. 1 hit “I Just Called To Say I Love You”. Currently Frank is involved in a Hollywood movie project called “The Milli Vanilli Story” and is pre-paring the Daddy Cool Show for Las Vegas.

Ein erster Tanzwettkampf ent-brennt zu „Let it all be Music“.

(„Got a Man on my Mind“) ... und Daddy Cool lebt nicht mehr.

Page 23: Daddy Cool Musical

PAUSE

Sunny stürmt davon und lässt Pearl mit ihren Erinnerungen allein („I can’t stand the Rain“).

Page 24: Daddy Cool Musical

A beat. A flashlight. A dancing body. Daddy Cool has started!

JAMAICA: Pearl is saying goodbye to all her friends. She is emigrating to London with her 10-year-old son: Sunny. Everybody sings: Holiday!

LONDON: Pearl and her son come to live with the friendly Lela. The young Sunny is playing outside and meets a little girl called Rose.

15 YEARS LATER: 15 years later: A Christmas cel-ebration in the church. Pearl and Sunny (now 25) have always loved to sing “Mary’s Boy Child there”. Sunny demonstrates his dancing skills for the first time in the middle of the service. It’s his birthday!

REHEARSAL ROOM: Sunny dances with his crew (“Sunshine”). They want to win the Dance Contest this year, but they are chased away by Benny and his crew (“Thunder”). The first dance battle takes place to the song “Let it all be Music.”

Outside the rehearsal room Sunny meets Rose again (for the first time after 15 years). She would love to sing, so Sunny asks her to become a singing member of his crew (“One Way Ticket”).

CLUB RASPUTIN: Eveline Baker hears from Benny that his girlfriend Rose (Eveline’s daughter) has taken a sudden interest in a guy named Sunny. Eveline forbids her daughter to start a singing career (“Ma Baker”).

In the meantime, Pearl confesses to Lela that she is still longing for her former lover Daddy Cool. She confesses that he is Sunny’s father, but she had never told this to her son. (“Got a Man on my Mind”)...and Daddy Cool isn’t alive anymore ….

SURPRISE PARTY FOR SUNNY: Rose sudden-ly finds herself among all Sunny’s friends; they dance and sing to celebrate his birthday (“Brown Girl in the Ring”).

Suddenly Eveline Baker appears outside the church. In the past she had stolen Daddy Cool away from Pearl and now she is trying to keep Sunny and his mother out of the way of her daughter. Benny catches Rose rehearsing with the Sunshine crew. He becomes angry and hits her. The crew protects her, and for the first time they perform together: “Sweet Dreams”. It is a raving success!

Eveline Baker gets angry and Pearl gets worried when they see how the friendship (or is it more than that?) be-tween Rose and Sunny is growing (“Baby, don’t forget my Number”).

Page 25: Daddy Cool Musical

OF DADDY COOL

INTERVAL

CLUB RASPUTIN: Everybody is singing and danc-ing in the club, waiting for the Dance Contest (Rasputin).

Eveline tells Sunny she can let him win the contest, if he is prepared to drop Rose in exchange. The church is closed, because it is too old and nearly fall-ing apart. Outside, all the church-goers sit and lament their lost ‘home’ (Rivers of Babylon).

Pearl and Lela think of a plan to save the church.Sunny demands his mother to tell him about his father, who he never knew. Pearl explains to him finally how she left London, pregnant by Daddy Cool, the dancer. She shows him a card Daddy Cool had written for his son’s birthday many years ago. Sunny storms away and leaves his mother behind with her memories (I can’t stand the Rain).

Sunny confronts Rose with everything he’s sudden-ly found out about his father: he was the man that had brought up Rose with Eveline Baker and had run the Ras-putin club. Totally confused, the two end their relationship (“When I die”).

In the meantime Pearl and Lela are organising a Carnival to save the church (Calendar Song).

Sunny and his crew are desperate without Rose. Benny doesn’t know how to go on without her either (“Blame it on the Rain”)

Rose suspects that her mother has been hiding a secret from the past. She finds Daddy Cool’s last will; it says that if his son Sunny eventually returned to London, then the Rasputin club would be his. Eveline realises she is losing everything she has always fought for.

THE DANCE CONTEST: Benny and the Thunder crew do their fantastic dance act. Compared with them Sunny and his crew are really low-spirited; until Rose sud-denly appears: she is back! And sings and dances with the Sunshine crew in an incredible act (“Daddy Cool”). The roof comes down and they win the contest.

Rose tells Sunny that his father has left him the club; he is overwhelmed by emotion and renames the Club “Daddy Cool”! Sunny and Rose can finally avow their love (“Sunny”).

THE STORY

Page 26: Daddy Cool Musical

Sunny se enfada y sale corriendo, dejando a Pearl sola con sus recuerdos (“I can’t stand the Rain”).

Tampoco Benny sabe cómo continuar sin ella (“Blame it on the Rain”).

Now one of Europe’s outstanding musical-directors, working on Broadway, in Germany, France, England and Holland, Mr. Habbema began his career adapting “Godspell” for Dutch audiences and directing Brecht\Weill musicals such as the “Threepenny Opera”. He then continued with a.o. “Blood Brothers”, “My Fair Lady” and “West Side Story” (choreography Jerry Mitchell – Hairspray\Full Monty\Legally Blonde New York). Most of his time and energy however is spent on world-creations such as “Dear Fox”, “Tsje-chow” and “Cyrano”. “Cyrano” was adapted by Sheldon Harnick and produced on Broadway in 1993, di-rected by Eddy Habbema in his Broadway debut. His version of the Viennese musical “Elisabeth” won the Dutch Musical Award for “Best Musical” in 2000 and the German Musical Award for “Best Director” in 2001.Recently he adapted Maury Yeston’s “Titanic” succesfully for Holland and Hamburg. And he directed the new Broadway version of “42nd Street” in Stuttgart (Germany). The British playwright Pam Gems graciously permitted Mr. Habbema to adapt her fa-mous “Piaf” to be played by an older and a younger Piaf. It got raving reviews, packed houses and the important ANWB “Best Musical” Award 2009.His totally renewed version of the London and Berlin hit “Daddy Cool” has turned into a worldwide success. At present Mr. Habbema is creating a new version of the Broadway and West-End hit: Shrek.
