    President’s Message

What’s in it for us?That is a question I’m sure many people ask themselves when someone knocks on your door and asks for your support. It’s a valid and worthwhile question. April will be our membership drive and it will be our task to answer that question for you in person.

Each Saturday in April, starting with 2nd of April from 1 – 5 PM, I and other members of the board, along with volunteers will be going door to door asking for your support by becoming a member of our Community Association.

Your annual membership fee of $20 per family per year enables us to bring you and your family the events and amenities such as the temporary ice rink we had this past winter and of course the successful Easter Egg Hunt we just held.

In addition to those events, we try to bring to our community, events like the Community Clean Up, Parade of Garage Sales, Summer Festival, Winter Event and lastly our continued advocacy to the City for issues such as traffic and safety issues.

Your dedicated team of volunteers that form the Board of Directors for the Calgary Evergreen Community Association work hard each month to ensure our community is a safe and desirable community to live in. The only way we can continue to do these things and more is by having two things: your annual membership and volunteers to help us.

I know many of you belong to the Evergreen Resident’s Association and already pay $105 HOA fee. So what’s the difference?

While our Community Association does the things I’ve mentioned above, the Evergreen Residents Association (ERA) was established by Genstar Development Company to assume ownership and responsibility of entrance features and feature parks within the community. They do NOT do any community events or do any advocacy on important issues to the City.

I hope this helps answer the question of what’s in it for you. Please consider becoming a member, if you are not already, you can purchase memberships online at our website www.myceca.ca/membership . If you are a member, we thank you very much for your support.

Lastly, please feel free to contact me directly via email, [email protected] with your comments or suggestions; I enjoy hearing from you.

City CrewS ready for Spring Street Sweeping program

Spring is just around the corner! That means the City’s annual Spring Clean-up is coming to neighbourhoods across Calgary.

Spring Clean-up is an annual street sweeping program that removes sanding materials and debris that has accumulated on roads and along major sidewalks and boulevards during the winter months. The program, kicking off April 3, improves safety and mobility for Calgary motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. But you might see crews out there working hard before April 3: pre-sweeping has already begun, so we’re busy removing materials along roads and boulevards.

This year, street sweeping will end by June 1. In order to make this happen, crews will be sweeping streets on a compressed schedule, working 7 days per week.

Keeping Calgary clean is a collaborative effort. To make sure the program runs smoothly, we’re asking all Calgarians to help us make the city beautiful by removing vehicles and carts from city roads when they see street sweeping signs in their community. This year, that includes weekends.

During the program, Calgarians can visit calgary.ca/sweep to:• Find answers to all of their questions on our FAQ• Visit a live map to track sweeper progress across the city• Learn if there will be a parking ban in their neighbourhood, and• Enter their address to confirm their street sweeping date.

Make sure to visit the website to learn more about street sweeping, and don’t forget to watch for signs in your neighbourhood starting April 3.

    Storm drainS

There are approximately 48,000 storm drains in Calgary. Last year, 311 received more than 1,600 calls related to storm drains and drainage issues including water ponding, pooling or ice build up and debris on storm drains. The City historically receives the majority of its storm drain –or ‘catch basin’- calls in March. Storm drains are the main way water gets into the underground pipe system. The metal grates that can be seen at the edge of the road are only a portion of the structure which is primarily under ground. Under the grates is a barrel that collects the water. The barrel is attached to a pipe that allows the water to be whisked away and eventually deposited in the river.

If you see a storm drain clogged by debris or snow, and it is safe to do so, you may remove the debris to allow for water to run freely into the drain. If a storm drain is encased in ice, please contact 311 so it can be thawed with specialized equipment – do not attempt to remove the ice yourself. Also, do not attempt to clean a catch basin if it’s submerged in water. You cannot be sure if the grate is intact, presenting a safety risk. If the drain is covered in water, please contact 311.

Calgary Evergreen Traffic UpdatePlease slow down, drive safely and watch out for each other!

    More Daylight!

We are into daylight saving time now, which means more light which means more kids playing in and around the playground zones more! Slow down!

The bus zones typically are around the playground zones, which mean more pedestrian traffic.

    Construction

As you may or may not have noticed, there is a construction zone on Everridge Dr. and Everoak Dr. where the Marshall Springs Middle School is being built. Please be cautious in this area. The spilled cement has been reported to the city but it there is more, be wary, as sharp cement can be hazardous to your tires. Also be cautious here as large vehicles block visibility and also take longer to stop.

    School Traffic

Please remain cautious and vigilant parking at the schools. Don’t make U-turns near the schools, practice safe and courteous driving as others are trying to get places quickly too, don’t let kids cross on their own and if you see any unsafe driving please report it to and also make a traffic service request. Links are below.

    Traffic Study

As I have reported before this year we are progressing on the traffic study. We are going over the study that was done surrounding the new school and are waiting to find out what the implementation dates are before we file our own requests. We will be meeting with the ward 13 office and city transportation officials this year to find what can be done and if any other info is needed. Once again, if you witness any traffic issues on an ongoing basis, please take the time to both report it to me at [email protected] and also via the Traffic Service Request directly to the police. This can be done at http://www.calgary.ca/cps/Pages/Traffic/Traffic-Service-Requests.aspx

Please report road and sign issues to 311. This can be done online at http://www.calgary.ca/CS/CSC/Pages/311.aspx or at the app website http://spot311.calgary.ca

If you have any traffic questions or concerns, or wish to comment on anything I have written here, you can email me at [email protected]

The Calgary Awards are for Calgarians. Individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, community groups and other organizations can all be nominated.

For specific eligibility requirements, how to nominate someone in your community and for more information visit calgary.ca/calgaryawards. Nominations close on Friday, May 6, 2016.

It’s not hard for a typical homeowner to get intimidated about his or her home’s heating and cooling system. This is complex machinery, and learning how to use it efficiently and effectively requires more know-how than just adjusting the thermostat. That being the case, following are some answers to basic questions about a typical residential HVAC system.

How do you get the most out of a furnace or A/C?Getting “the most” out of your HVAC system typically refers to efficiency, the ability to convert electricity or fuel into heating or cooling at the least cost. Inspecting the air filter on a forced-air HVAC system regularly is an easy and inexpensive way to improve energy efficiency. Scheduling regular preventive maintenance by a trusted professional is another way. Reducing

the heating/cooling load of your home with effective air sealing and insulation is a third way.

How often should the air filter be replaced? It depends on how much air is being pushed through the filter and how dirty your indoor air is. During the off-season, you probably won’t have to change it very much. During high-use seasons, check it every three or four weeks, and change it when it looks dirty. Write down the date you changed the filter on its cardboard frame, so you won’t forget how long it’s been in operation.

How often should your HVAC system be professionally maintained?Annual maintenance is recommended for each “side” of your HVAC system

    – the heating system in the fall and cooling system in the spring. Expert maintenance will ensure better efficiency and performance, and safer operation. The technician will find small problems before they develop into serious problems.

How big should my heating or cooling system be?It should be sized to satisfy the unique requirements of your home, and that doesn’t just mean its square footage. Proper HVAC sizing takes into account other factors, including the home’s layout, window plan, airtightness, orientation on the lot, etc.

For more help with questions about Calgary home’s heating and cooling, please contact us at Arpi’s Industries at 403-236-2444 or arpis.com

The SCooP on Dog PooPWith 150 public off-leash areas and over 100,000 dogs in our city, it’s clear Calgarians love their canine companions. What isn’t to love is the stinky situation that’s left behind when owners don’t pick up after their pets.

Cleaning up your dog’s waste is part of being a responsible pet owner and helps keep our yards, parks and off-leash areas safe and healthy.

Here are five facts you may not know about doggy doo-doo:

    1. It’s classified as a hazardous pollutant. It’s in the same category as toxic chemicals!

    2. It’s crawling with E. coli and roundworm larvae which, if ingested by humans or dogs, can lead to brain, eye and other organ damage.

    3. It’s not a good fertilizer. Its high nutrient content is toxic to lawns and will create “hot spots” causing the grass to burn and discolour.

    4. It doesn’t absorb into the soil, so the risk of spreading its harmful effects can linger for years!

    5. It attracts mice, coyotes and other wildlife that consider it a delicious snack.

Keeping our city pet-waste free is easy, if we all do our part. Always carry pet waste bags with you when you walk your dog, and pick up and properly dispose of your pet’s waste as soon as possible.

To learn more about the importance of picking up after your pet, check out our P.U.P.P.Y. (Pick Up Pooch’s Poo Yourself) program at calgary.ca/puppy.

Save Yourself a Trip to the LandfillCalgary Community StandardS (formerly Animal & Bylaw Services) in partnership with Waste & Recycling Services and your community association is pleased to offer another year of Community Clean-ups for FREE of charge to Calgarians. A Community Clean-up is a day scheduled at your community centre where you can bring your household items that may not fit in your black, brown or blue carts like furniture or old fencing or items that fill up your carts too quickly or just an accumulation of items that are ready for the landfill. If you live in a multi-unit housing complex, we welcome you to bring your waste and recycling items to this event especially if it is closer than the designated community recycling depots.

We are pleased to announce that 3 packer trucks will be provided this year (2 for waste and 1 for organic materials). Last year, 110 communities were served between April and October. Please check with your community association to see when your Community Clean-up has been booked and better yet, volunteer to help with the event which is held either on a Saturday or Sunday from 9 am – 2 pm. Your community association needs 15-20 volunteers to put on the event so your assistance is greatly appreciated. Calgary Community Standards provides funds for food and refreshments for the volunteers, advertising and promotion, gloves, garbage bags and any other items used to help Clean-up.

Please note, there are items that the City of Calgary’s packer trucks will not accept:

    • Tires, home appliances, paint, household chemicals, propane tanks, microwaves, car batteries, home electronics, liquids, metals and glass, railway ties.

    • Your Community Association usually enhances the event with recycling services such as electronics, metal, paper shredding and possible tire recycling and paint pickup (or you can take your cans of paint to any fire hall station).

The Community Clean-ups provide a fantastic opportunity to work with your neighbours and community associations to Clean-up your yards and homes, parks, off-leash areas and sport playfields. Thank you for your commitment to help create healthy, safe and vibrant communities.

For more information about the date set in your community, please call your Community Association or you can go to www.calgary.ca/cleanup for the full schedule and further details.

The place where we feel safest — at home — is where most smoking-materials structure fires, deaths, and injuries occur. Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths. Every year we have over 500 fires started due to smoking materials, this is preventable and can be reduced!

Some tips to remember:• If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires

that started in living rooms, family rooms and bedrooms • Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches and other smoking

materials high out of the reach of children. We have found the kids to be very observant regarding “hidden” lighters.

PUT IT OUT, RIGHT OUT !

    • Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn.

    • DO NOT discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants, landscaping,

    • peat moss, dried grasses, leaves or other things that could ignite easily.

    • Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out. Dousing in water or sand is the best way to do that.

Your Calgary Fire department has been called to many fires burning on the outside of homes from ignited peat moss in planters while occupants were sleeping inside.

DiD YOu kNOW THAT in addition to your Fire Department being highly trained to battle fires, that we have specialty teams that are further trained in , Airport rescue, Structural collapse, Confined space , Dive rescue, High Angle and Hazardous material response?

Looking to save a few dollars on your utility bill this season? Look no further than your lawn.

The following advice can help stretch your water this season without sacrificing your lawn:

Time your watering. Aim for early mornings when possible, to minimize evaporation or sun scorching. Prevent over-watering by putting your sprinkler on a timer.Place your sprinkler wisely. Maximum coverage is nice, but try to avoid watering hard surfaces such as driveways and sidewalks. This is literally water down the drain.Check your equipment. Make sure all sprinklers and hoses are free of leaks or blockages.use Mother Nature to your advantage. Divert eaves-troughs to collect rainfall in a barrel or other large container and keep it covered to lessen insects and contaminants.Maintain proper lawn care. Avoid mowing too short, as longer grass receives more shade and absorbs more water. Having your lawn aerated once a year can also help water penetrate more deeply.

Head injuries are a leading cause of serious injury and death to children riding bicycles*. Most injuries occur when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object, or collides with another cyclist/pedestrian. Remember – it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and worn during recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skating, or cycling.

Getting informed• Wearing a helmet while cycling can prevent a serious

injury, or even save a life;• Brain injuries can cause permanent disability or death; • Reduce your risk by always wearing your helmet;• Replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash, even

    if it appears undamaged.

Getting started• Allow children to assist when buying their helmet. Cyclists

who choose their own helmet are more likely to wear them;• Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride tricycles

need to wear helmets;• Parents must lead by example – always wear a helmet when

    cycling.

Getting the right fit• Take the time to properly fit and adjust your helmet to

ensure maximum protection in case of a crash;• When worn properly, helmets should fit level, not tilted

up, or down over the forehead;• Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To test the fit,

    the helmet should not fall off when you shake your head from side-to-side while the straps are unfastened;

    • Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly forward from the ears;

    • Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin strap when it is fastened;

    • Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with the helmet. They will help improve the overall fit, comfort and safety.

Spring is a great time for a fresh start! Tips to make spring cleaning your kitchen a breeze:

One task at a time: Tackling the bigger, dirtier jobs first will make the rest of the work seem not so daunting. Start by emptying out the fridge, cupboards and drawers and giving them a good wipe down.

Organization: Take this opportunity to sort and discard older, expired items. Throw out multiple opened condiment jars and nearly-empty containers. Rearrange your cupboards making the most used items more accessible.

Rejuvenate: Over time, your bright and shiny stainless steel cookware can become stained and discoloured. They can easily be brought back to life using specialty non-abrasive cleaners.

Short-cuts to save on time: Oven cleaning used to be one of the toughest tasks. Taking advantage of self-cleaning features on ovens can significantly reduce cleaning time and the use of harsh cleaning chemicals.

Friends of Fish CreekSupport outdoor Education in FiSh crEEk through LEarning naturaLLy - donatE through Shaw BirdiES For kidS prESEntEd By aLtaLink

The Friends of Fish Creek facilitates the TD Learning Naturally program, which provides valuable educational opportunities in Fish Creek for Calgary students between grades K – 6. This program gives disadvantaged children and newcomers to Canada – who wouldn’t normally have these learning opportunities – the chance to experience nature first hand. For children to better understand how we are interconnected with nature, Learning Naturally offers a variety of curriculum-linked activities that teach children about being active outdoors, respecting nature and understanding the diverse ecosystems of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Through Learning Naturally these students are given unforgettable learning opportunities and learn lifelong lessons about the diversity of nature and the importance of environmental conservation. This indispensable program reaches close to 5,000 young students per year, but as it does not receive any government funding, its continuation is in jeopardy. For only $10 you can fund one child’s day of education in Fish Creek Provincial Park, following that formula, it costs only $100 to fund an unforgettable learning experience for 10 students, and so on.

2016 will mark the second year that the Friends of Fish Creek’s TD Learning Naturally program has been chosen to participate in Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink (BFK). The Shaw Charity Classic will run from August 31 – September 4 at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club and Birdies for Kids provides an amazing opportunity to support the Learning Naturally program and bring more students to Fish Creek throughout the year.

You can support Learning Naturally by making a one-time flat donation or a pledge for each birdie made by PGA TOUR Champions players during the 2016 Shaw Charity Classic. Every dollar donated for Learning Naturally through BFK will be matched up to 50%. Through collaborating with the BFK program, your initial donation will be combined with other donations and have the opportunity to increase. If you enjoy visiting Fish Creek with your family, and recognize the importance of instilling a lifetime of unforgettable memories in today’s youth, then please donate to the Friends of Fish Creek through Birdies for Kids.

    BEgiNNER gARDENERS

Have you ever wanted to make a salad from vegetables you grew yourself? Or give a bouquet to your loved one made of fresh flowers picked from your own garden? Now is your time to shine and grow like a pro with a few tips to get you started:

RESEARCHWhile your first attempt may not be as beautiful as Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, it can certainly serve as inspiration as you begin to visualize how you would like your garden to look. Hop on the web, take a stroll through your neighbourhood or head to your local garden store for some creative inspiration.

TOOLSYou'll need to acquire a few essential tools for preparing the soil/space, for planting your seeds and for garden maintenance:• gloves - To protect your hands from prickles, thorns and dirt, make sure to have some sturdy gardening gloves on hand.• Hand Trowel – This will act as your best friend when it comes time to plant your seeds, excavate weeds and transport items from pots to your garden.• Wheelbarrow - Investing in a wheelbarrow is a must for gardeners. You'll likely need to purchase some gardening soil to mix in with your ground soil. Having a wheelbarrow on hand to help you transport the soil from your vehicle to your garden is gold.

gARDENiNg gEARTo be a true gardener, you'll need a few key items in your wardrobe:• Overalls – There's a reason traditional Carhartt overalls (available at Mark's) have stayed in style for so long. With room for knee pads for extra cushioning and multiple utility pockets, overalls are essential.• Footwear – You'll want to wear shoes that are comfortable and functional. A great option are Mark's WindRiver rain boots which come in a shorter profile and are antimicrobial to keep your feet fresh. Not to mention, they're easy to hose off after a day in the dirt.• Sun hat – You'll likely be spending quite a bit of time outside so it's best to protect yourself with a wide brimmed hat in addition to wearing sunscreen.

get back on. From the words of Ray’s song “Nothing can’t be overcome, problems can all be undone. When your Spirits are low and you can’t take much more, just know when God closes a window, He opens a door!” Exercise Your Adventure!1. Consider a major setback or challenge that you are experiencing.

    2. As difficult as this may be, consider the new possibilities that may lie ahead that would not otherwise be available to you had this setback not occurred.

    3. View your setback as part of an adventure. Rather than focusing on your problem, make a list of new exciting possibilities that may lie ahead! Then pick one or two new possibilities to have fun working on over the next month.

    East Atrium Side

I’ve always had a passion for the West – not just horses, mountains and country music, but also the pioneer Spirit of Adventure and blazing new trails.

Not long ago I received a kind note from my friend, the late great Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame legend Ray Griff. Ray had known that I had been going through some challenging times and so titled his email “checking in!” He wrote “How are you young fellow! ‘Hope all is well on the western front and troubles are behind you. Stay well and keep the faith!” I wrote back “It’s been a rocky ride but I think the dust is starting to settle.” Ray replied “I’m pleased you’re in the process of getting all that behind you and that you’re moving on cowboy! yay!” Sadly, Brother Ray (as he often referred to himself as he signed off on his emails to me) recently passed on, and I along with so many Country music fans will miss him dearly. Still we will continue to appreciate the legacy he left through his music and hits including his penning of over 2000 tunes! (With more than 750 songs recorded by such artists as Tennessee Ernie Ford, Crystal Gale, Conway Twitty, Eddy Arnold, Jerry Lee Lewis, Wayne Newton, Loretta Lynn and George Jones).

One of Ray’s songs I will always remember is “When God Closes a Door”. It’s a great song with a catchy message that I recorded and Ray produced in Nashville for my latest CD If I Can Dream.

As Ray reminds us in this song, a key to living through the downturns in life is to keep a positive faith in new possibilities. In other words, set backs are not accepted as final defeat but rather bumps in the road which are part of an ongoing journey. Councillor Diane’s City Hall Update

Fluoridation in Calgary’s Water supplyDuring the 2013 election, I made the commitment to meet with Alberta Health Services (AHS) officials right after being elected to determine if there was adequate research to support reintroducing flouride back into our water supply. At that time there was not, but Dr. Richard Musto, AHS Medical Officer of Health, committed to have that research done.

I recently met with Dr. Musto and Dr. Bill Ghali, Scientific Director of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, to discuss all approaches to the fluoridation issue in our city. I would like to hear from you on your views on this. I will work with Mayor Nenshi and my colleagues and see what we should bring forward to Council based on all feedback.

sW transitWay & Brt updateThe SW Transitway project team, along with Calgary Transit, distributed project information to residents on local routes directly benefiting from the SW Transitway route. In total, over 5,400 FAQ’s were handed out in February 2016.

Several information sessions have been held this year, bringing many excellent ideas forward to minimize the impact on

Ward 13 communities. The most notable info session was held at the Woodcreek Community Association on February 23 with both supportors and detractors in attendance. Many constituents were able to get the correct information and their opposition heard by project staff. Attendees were encouraged to submit their input on the SW BRT terminal designs and other finer details for the project.

All up to date information and public engagement can be found at www.Calgary.ca/SWTransitway.

Calgary parks & Calgary Community standards Recently I met with Kurt Hanson (GM Community Services), to discuss what proactive measures are and can be put in place to promote safer pathways shared by all who use it. Here is his update on what his team is working on:

    1. Monitoring Bylaw Offences on the pathway:

    • Monitoring speeding, bikers/rollerbladers with dogs on-leash, citizens with off-leash dogs, staying on the appropriate side of path, etc

    • Installation of bike speed monitoring devices in 4 locations along the Bow River

    • 5 permanent Eco Counters and 2

mobile counters that can be moved to problematic areas

    • Parks pathways can send target area maps to Bylaw asking them to show a presence in necessary areas

    • By law officers work with CPS to issue tickets and tend to pathway accidents

    2. Approach to pathway widths/ signage in high traffic areas:

    • Minimum standard for river pathways is 3m, regional pathways is 2.5m – now increased to 3.5m and 3m, respectively

    • Minimum standard width of local pathways was increased from 2m to 2.5m

    • Pathways are twinned and separated where justified by volume

    • Pathway stencils are used rather than adding signs

    3. Pathway snow clearing approach:

    • Clear as much snow as possible with allotted budget

    • Track an unfunded “Snow & Ice wish list” • Prioritization system is based on a

combination of 311 data, usage data and importance of pathway link

April 10 - 16 is National Volunteer Week in Canada and on behalf of all Calgarians we want to sincerely thank community volunteers for all they do each and every day to improve neighbourhood life in Calgary!

There are 150 community associations in every neighbourhood across our city, and they are all run by volunteers. In fact, more than 20,000 volunteers are involved in community associations here in Calgary, making it the LARGEST collective volunteer movement in the city!

Without their hard-working volunteers community associations would not exist. They would not be able to provide you with the programs you enjoy, put on the year-round special events that bring you together as neighbours, advocate for your community on local issues, or produce this monthly newsletter full of important information. These volunteers are dedicated to making sure your community is a great place to live, work, and play.

Community volunteers are the lifeblood of the community association movement here in Calgary, a movement that brings Calgarians that small-town feel in our large urban centre. So take a moment during National Volunteer Week, April 10 – 16, to thank a volunteer in your community for their hard work and dedication to ensuring you love where you live!

i was honoured to host a pre-budget forum in Bridlewood; thank you to everyone who shared their opinions last month!

Great ideas sparked excellent discussion on the challenges facing Alberta’s economy; & the feedback is of great assistance as I do all I can to help this new gov’t find its fiscal way for the good of our entire province!

My Progressive Conservative colleagues & I are working hard to find solutions to the issues that matter most to Albertans. One of those issues—no doubt—is the state of the province’s finances. The NDP gov’t is not to blame for the price of oil; but they are responsible for their misguided policies. The Finance Minister has hinted that this year’s deficit could top $10 billion—but he could not bring himself to say the number out loud. The NDP have increased personal & corporate taxes, introduced a $3 billion carbon tax, created damaging uncertainty re: royalties, & have demonstrated no spending restraint whatsoever. They are racking up historic debt levels ($50 Billion in 5 years)—with no plan to ever pay it back. These policies are killing jobs, driving away investment, & hurting our credit rating. NDP policies are making a bad situation much worse; &

the gov’t needs to correct their course now—if they want to protect the Alberta Advantage that are so proud of.

Our Progressive Conservative Caucus is bringing forth pragmatic, common-sense solutions: something sorely lacking from both the gov’t & the official opposition. Unlike the parties to the left & right, PC’s are focused on Albertans--rather than political ideology. Our PC caucus promotes jobs & economic growth—with smart, fiscally conservative policies—while having the courage to compassionately tackle complex social issues.

A state funeral was held last month for former premier Don Getty, who served as Alberta’s premier during a very tough time: 1985 to 1992. Premier Getty was a success in everything he touched in life: football, business, & politics. But most importantly, he was a good husband & father--who founded Family Day in Alberta (& ultimately across Canada)--as a way of encouraging people to think about the importance of family to the fabric of our lives. As PC Advocate for Indigenous Relations, I am proud to note that Premier Getty introduced self-government for Metis settlements, & was awarded the Order of the Sash by the Metis Nation of AB. He was also an Honorary Chief of the Whitefish Lake Cree Band. My condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren to whom he was so dear.

Alberta “get Outdoors (“gO!”) Weekend is April 8 - 10: * Where will you go, & what will you do?

Before my time in the last gov’t as Associate Minister of Wellness, I was honoured to spearhead this initiative as an incentive to encourage Albertans to enjoy the great outdoors after the long winter months. Spending time & being active outside is great for our minds & bodies. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, & there is an almost endless list of recreational opportunities available to us—both competitive & recreational. This “GO!” weekend (& everyday), I encourage you to Get Outdoors & rejuvenate yourself for your own benefit--as well as for the benefit of your families, friends, co-workers, & all Albertans!

Thank you to the inspirational staff & students at glenmore Christian Academy for the invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas with everyone in grades 3 – 5!
