Lehrinhalte/Gliederung This course is designed to give students a comprehensiveunderstanding of various laboratory tests for evaluatingengineering soil properties (needed for the analysis and design ofgeotechnical systems). The course involves studying theunderlying principles, equipment, experimental procedure, anddata processing. This is followed by hands-on experience inconducting the tests, interpretation of test results, evaluation ofsoil properties, and presentation. The various tests covered inthis course may be grouped in the following categories:
• Soil classification (particle size distribution)• Density and compaction (density, water content, proctor test, maximum and minimum index density)• Permeability (constant head test, falling head test)• Consolidation (one-dimensional consolidation test)• Shear strength (direct shear test, triaxial compression test)
Lecture: Soil Mechanics
Tutorial: Supervision Exercises
Practical: Experimental soil mechanics
Qualifikationsziele Students understand soil classification and soil behaviour. Theyare able to assess different types of soils. They receive practicaltraining in soil testing and will be able to evaluate data from thirdsources.

Lehrinhalte/Gliederung Students will get to know various technologies for thedevelopment of virtual intelligent environments based ongraphics-oriented software tools, specification and programminglanguages. The lectures provide students with the basicconceptual knowledge and the practicals in the computer labconduce to the development of skills in using the technologies.Main topics include:
• graphical modelling of three-dimensional spatial states,• graphical animation of one-dimensional temporal processes,• graphical reproduction of regular relationships,• involvement of multimedia contents,• control of interactive interdependencies,• programming of intelligent behaviours,• generation of local and networked presentations,• integration of various software components.
The course combines elements of the computer science subareascomputer graphics, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence froma practical and application perspective.
Qualifikationsziele At the end of the course, students master the covered computer-based technologies and tools. They are able to transfer real orartificial scenarios of different application areas into simplevirtual intelligent environments and to utilize them forvisualisation and presentation, partly also for analysis andsimulation purposes.
