A big thank you goes to the following special senior parent volunteers who have given years and countless hours of their time and commitment for WHHS and all of our students! Thank you to Tom Anderson, Valencia Harris-Brown, Maria Horn, Carol Philpott, Penny Poirer, and Joe Ross. Our volunteers really made a difference, and here are examples of some firsts! Organized and hosted a fantastic 2013 WHHS After Prom, part of a national movement to provide safe, substance-free entertainment on prom night. Hosted the first State of the School presentation by Principal Jeff Brokamp. The WHHS Association had an impact through volunteer support of: New family summer welcome activities. Grade level dances, social events, awards, and graduation. Student buses for the Boys Varsity Basketball Team State Championship Tournament. Hospitality during open houses and parent events. Our amazing staff through the Welcome Breakfast and the Staff Appreciation Week. The College Information Center. Representation on the ILT and LSDMC (Local School Decision Making Committee) Communication to the WHHS community through our newsletter, Under the Dome, Directory, and Constant Contact. We also did a great job hosting some terrific fundraisers that continue to get bigger and better — Walnut24 and WalnutFest — with the help of students, parents, WHIP, and Boosters! Our Legacy of Excellence Annual Campaign grew again thanks to some fun phone-a-thons and families responding to the call! We helped raise over $150,000 this year to help pay for items like textbooks not in the typical CPS curriculum, “Schedule E” for club advisers and athletic coaches, and steel drums. Thank you to all the co-chairs, committee members, and donors who made this possible! Wow! What a year. The summer has already begun, and so has our work for next year! Please contact me if you are interested in joining the new family welcome committee which has some welcome events planned around the time of summer orientation. Walnut24 has also gotten off to a great start. Mark your calendars for Oct. 26 for this wonderful event, and please contact Co-Chairs Lauren Lacerda ([email protected]) or Nicole Dyehouse ([email protected]) to join the committee now. Thank you for all your support. Enjoy the summer and I look forward to working with you next year. Susan Shelton WHHS Association President
