Open Badges in Education
Learning is changing ... Learning extends across multiple contexts, experiences and interactions Learning environments become open, networked, distributed, personal, social Learners can take multiple paths to acquire competencies and refine skills
but ... Much of learning remains undetected or unrecognised in formal accreditation Formally recognised learning outcomes represent a tiny fraction of all learning
Open Badges ... Help capture and transfer evidence of learning across contexts

Badge mechanics (1) - unlock badges and access microlearning
The History Channel has a brand page that can be followed. Users can check in to sites like the Tower of London. When checking-in, a tip from The History Channel pops up and explains some fun facts about the background of the site. These tips are fun little nuggets of information. They makes history accessible and fun.

Designing micro-assessment at skill-level
Approach 1 “Mastery” Identify learning goals to be achieved/mastered by all students and
describe criteria for getting a badge prior to learning. >>> pre-defined, standardised, predictable
Approach 2 “Discovery” Observe the process and ask stakeholders (teachers, learners, peers) to
identify unique achievements of each individual during learning.>>> emergent, individual, potential
