President’s Column
What is also interesting is the indifference of the international community toward the
physical targeting of an indigenous people and the targeting of their civilizational legacy in
Nineveh, Nimrud and other historical lands.
Our Aid Society was up to the challenge to confront all the difficulties that our people are
going through, in both Iraq and Syria, by all the available means. And this was made
possible by the generous support from different countries especially the United States,
Canada and Estonia. Also, we were able to gain new partners that share our values. Here, I
would like to mention the valuable support of the Assyrian Aid Society in the United States,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and Norway. Also worth
mentioning, the exceptional effort and support from Mr. Wilfred Wong from London,
England.
Our Society has played a big role in conveying the true message to the international
community about the sad reality and the miserable situation that our people has found
themselves in. The message was delivered to the human rights council in Geneva through
our participation in the human rights forum in March, 2015. A special session was
organized in this regard where we were successful in explaining the severe injustices that
our people are facing today to the international community. Also, our society participated in
the fourteenth permanent forum for the indigenous people that took place in New York in
April, 2015. Again, we were able to organize a special session to shade the light on the
suffering of our people due to its continuous targeting.
But despite all what we have gone through in Iraq and Syria, we continue to support the
Assyrian educational system both morally and financially in Dohuk and Erbil. As well as the
Society continued supplying medicines and medical supplies through its mobile clinic
program that provides medical services to the needy families in different locations in
Dohuk. The society succeeded in providing school supplies to thousands of displaced
students in Dohuk and Erbil and implemented a relief programs that included distribution of
thousands of food baskets and hygiene kits for displaced people and refugees in different
regions.
In conclusion, we would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to all the supporters of our
society, individuals, organizations and partners whether from our people or our friends, who
are making our success in achieving our goals possible.
The year 2015 was a very long for our Assyrian Christian people in their displaced areas
with their brethren in Dohuk, Erbil, Kirkuk, Sulaymania and in Nineveh plain regions.
Until December, 2015 most of the Nineveh plains and Mosul residents are out of their
homes, also the residents of the Khabour region due to the ISIS occupation of their areas or
because of the military operations, and the devastation that it causes in the region. What
happened, and still happening, to our people is a continuous genocide and a systematic
targeting of indigenous people to uproot them from their historical lands that they inhibited
continuously for thousands of years.
