Evidenzbasiertes Handeln: Medizin, Bildungswesen
Evidence-based Medicine: What It Is and What It Isn't. D. Sackett et al, British Medical Journal. 312, 1996, S. 71-72
Gemeinsamkeit: ein hohes Gut: Gesundheit / Bildung Verwirklichung mit endlichen (!) Mitteln

Concerns about Science Interest and Involvement
Most liked and disliked subjects in secondary level II [Zwick, Renn, 2000]

II.A
An encouraging message to begin with: enjoyment and satisfaction («fun»)
Interactive Learning Labs (ILLs): overall finding about the same - over more than half a decade, - for physics and other sciences, - for various age groups:
enjoyment and satisfaction roughly 70% - 90% (of max. value)

Looking furhter
Yet... but short term setting and impact only Improvements ? Obstacles?
A good starting point!

II.A
ILLs and “Meaningful Science Contexts”: a word of encouragement … and of warning
hands-on science, authenticity, meaningful contexts: relevance for learner´s self and lifeworld
“contextualisation” (science education) “situatedness“ (educational science)
- topical: meaningful, capturing content - episodic: notable events - „spatial“: notable learning places - …
interactive learning labs
ok, but how?
Muckenfuß (1996)
interest relevance
what now??

II.A
IPN, 1997
Measure context effects, and then choose the right one

Evidence-based Science Communication example A) Interactive learning laboratories
choose the right context (if possible) - eg. blood pressure, if you build a “pressure unit” - or astronomy, if you build new units
… not always possible in given situation, of course

II.A
Out-of-school learning settings: intermediate resume
too few studies, no meta-analysis however, an approximate image becomes visible
“fun factor” (acceptance and popularity): good! - “was fun”, “would enjoy another visit”: from 70% to 90%
“gender gap”: immediate positive effect for girls > boys - science interest difference (girls vs. boys) decreasing
significant effect already after one visit
other important factor: in-school embedding (follow-up) - stand alone visit vs. visit + follow up teaching (1 h):
d (learning test) = 0.57 (biology, 5th grade, 1 visit, [WB06]) - as important as rare: no embedding > 2/3 of visits
important field of action!

Example: B) Science in Newspapers
How far can we get by systematic curricular
embedding of context-based science learning?
science centers (out-of-classroom)… … and newspapers (in classroom):
use newspaper articles with science related elements as basis for learning tasks (newspaper story problems, NSP)
2 ways of “bringing science to life” (i.e. embedding science in “meaningful contexts”)

Ergebnisse `Zeitungsaufgaben´: Zwischenbilanz
Motivation: deutliche Verbesserung ggü. konventionellen Aufgaben (und ggü. Ausgangslage): p < 0.001, d = 1.6
Leistung: deutliche Verbesserung ggü. konventionellen Aufgaben: p < 0.001, d (v/E)= 0.91/1.18

Evidence-based Science Communication
- Aufbau eine gemeinsamen, auch quantitativen Wissensbasis - Effektstärken angeben -> Basis für Meta-Analysen - breite Theoriebasis (Science Education,
Lehr-Lern-Forschung, Entwicklungspsy., Sozial-Psy.) - geplante Interventionsexperimente

- Wissen und Verstehen sowie - Freude und Werte - Orientierung,
kritisches Denken die daraus entstehen
auch für Forschung dazu: - „good practice“ + Empirie = improved practice
Themen: - motivierende Kontexte - kognitive Aktivierung - kritisches Denken - langfristige Wirkung - ...
